Krita is a genuinely free, open-source desktop graphics editor built primarily for digital painting. It is an excellent choice for illustration, concept art, comics, texture work, storyboards, and frame-by-frame 2D animation. Commercial artists may use it without paying a license fee, and it runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and supported Android devices.
Krita is not a universal replacement for Photoshop. Its strengths are brushes, painting, line work, layers, masks, color management, comics, and hand-drawn animation; photography, page layout, vector-heavy design, and large collaborative pipelines may be better served by other applications.
What is Krita?
Krita is a free and open-source raster graphics editor developed within the KDE/Krita ecosystem. It is designed around a canvas-and-brush workflow rather than around raw-photo processing or page layout.

Artists use Krita for digital painting, character design, concept art, comics and manga, storyboards, texture painting, print illustrations, and short frame-by-frame animations. It is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and compatible Android devices. Krita does not list official iPhone or iPad support.
Calling Krita a “free graphics editor” is accurate, but incomplete. It is best understood as a painting-focused graphics editor, not a general-purpose substitute for every graphics, photography, vector, layout, or video application.
For a beginner’s overview, see the official getting-started documentation.
Is Krita really free?
Yes. The official desktop download is free, and Krita is released under the GNU General Public License version 3. Commercial use of artwork created in Krita is permitted. Artists, schools, freelancers, and companies can install and use the application without a subscription.
Krita is also available through paid store editions, including listings associated with the Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic Games Store, and Mac App Store. These purchases primarily provide a store-managed way to support development and receive platform-managed updates. They do not mean that the basic application requires payment.
Using Krita commercially is different from reselling Krita
- Commercial artwork: permitted. You can sell paintings, illustrations, comics, textures, and other work made with Krita.
- Modified software: redistribution must comply with GPL obligations.
- Krita branding: open-source licensing does not remove trademark and naming restrictions.
- Unchanged copies: selling a copy under another name is not automatically allowed simply because Krita is open source.
Read the license page if you plan to distribute a modified build, bundle Krita with another product, or use its name commercially.
Current version and safe download options
Krita’s official pages have recently shown different version numbers and release branches. The official homepage reported Krita 5.3.3 and 6.0.3 releases dated July 29, 2026, while another official download page still identified 5.3.2.1 as the latest stable release. Regional download pages have also displayed different branch information.

Because of that inconsistency, do not rely on a version number copied into an old article. Check the current official download page when installing. Select the stable release unless you specifically need a testing, nightly, Plus, or Next build.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Krita’s download page at krita.org.
- Select your operating system and architecture.
- Download the stable installer or package.
- Install or extract it, then launch Krita.
- Create a small test document and save it as a

Official downloads reduce the risk of bundled or tampered installers. Avoid generic “free download” portals and unofficial repacks. When the download page supplies SHA-256 or SHA-1 checksums, compare the checksum of your downloaded file with the published value.
Android availability depends on compatible ARM64 devices, tablets, and ChromeOS configurations. Android is not identical to the desktop experience: storage, plugins, keyboard shortcuts, interface space, and performance can differ substantially.
What Krita can do
Digital painting and illustration
Krita’s central strength is its brush-based workflow. It includes multiple brush engines, customizable presets, pressure-sensitive tablet input, stabilizers for cleaner lines, and assistants for perspective and other controlled drawing tasks.
A typical illustration can use separate layers for a sketch, line art, flats, shadows, highlights, and effects. Layer groups, blending modes, transparency controls, masks, and selections allow complex edits without permanently painting over the underlying work.

Dockers, keyboard shortcuts, workspaces, and tablet settings are highly customizable, which lets experienced artists shape the interface around their process.
Comics, manga, and line art
Krita is well suited to comic workflows involving clean line art, panels, perspective, reusable templates, and halftone or screentone-style effects. Assistants and page-oriented tools can help with repeated production tasks.

Register your device to access additional programs like ArtRage 5 and openCanvas for expanded creative possibilities.
Krita can open and save PSD files, which is useful when exchanging layered artwork. Compatibility is not perfect, however. Photoshop-specific effects, text behavior, masks, blending modes, and other application-specific features may not reproduce exactly. Test a representative client file before moving an entire workflow.
Frame-by-frame animation
Krita includes a timeline, animation frames, and onion-skin tools for hand-drawn 2D animation. It is a practical choice for animated sketches, short sequences, storyboards, and drawn animation tests.
It is not a complete replacement for a production pipeline. Krita is less suited to project management, 3D animation, advanced compositing, large-scale asset management, and sophisticated video editing. Export requirements can also depend on the Krita version, encoder, container, and operating system. Consult the version-specific manual for the current export procedure rather than assuming every release uses the same menu path.
Color management and print work
Krita supports RGB and CMYK workflows, ICC color profiles, and high-bit-depth painting. Official feature information also describes HDR-related capabilities, but practical HDR behavior depends on the Krita branch, operating system, display hardware, graphics stack, and color-management environment, including whether the system uses Wayland or X11.
For print work, obtain the required profile and export specifications from the printer or press. A correctly configured document is not enough by itself: display calibration, soft-proofing, profile conversion, and the chosen export format all affect the final result. Krita’s official press information is available at krita.org/en/about/press.
Text, vector content, plugins, and scripting
Krita can handle some text and vector-related content, but it is not a dedicated vector illustration or page-layout application. Text-heavy brochures, books, reports, and complex typography are usually better handled by layout software.
Plugins, scripts, brush packs, templates, and other resources can extend Krita. Separate core features from community resources: third-party extensions have their own maintenance, compatibility, and security risks. Install them only from sources you trust, and expect a major Krita update to make some extensions or settings incompatible.

A practical beginner workflow
Create, organize, and save a document
- Open Krita and choose the command to create a new document.
- Set pixel dimensions and resolution for the intended screen or print output.
- Choose the required color model and bit depth; the default is suitable for many first projects.
- Keep the sketch, line art, color, shadows, and effects on separate layers.
- Save the editable project in Krita’s native
.kraformat. - Export a copy as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, PSD, or another format required by the destination application.
Do not keep a layered illustration only as a JPEG. JPEG is generally an export format and does not preserve Krita’s editable layer structure. PNG is often preferable for lossless web artwork, while TIFF or PSD may be appropriate for particular print or interchange requirements.
Set up a drawing tablet
- Confirm that the tablet works in the operating system before troubleshooting Krita.
- Install the current driver supplied for your tablet and operating system.
- In Krita’s tablet settings, select the available input API appropriate to your system.
- Test pressure with a pressure-sensitive brush.
- If pressure is missing on Windows, check the driver’s Windows Ink mode and Krita’s corresponding tablet-input setting.
- Restart Krita after changing driver or input modes.
- Test a simple brush before diagnosing stabilizers, tilt, or custom presets.
Exact labels and locations vary by operating system, driver, and Krita version, so use the current manual if the settings in your installation differ.
System requirements and real-world performance
Official download information lists at least 4 GB of RAM, with 16 GB recommended on the cited page, plus graphics support for OpenGL 3.0 or higher or Direct3D 11. A graphics tablet must also be compatible with the operating system.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11These are not performance guarantees. The practical workload depends on:
- Canvas dimensions and display resolution.
- Color depth and profile.
- Number of layers, masks, and groups.
- Brush-engine complexity and brush size.
- Animation frame count.
- Available RAM and scratch-disk speed.
- GPU driver quality.
- Number of large documents open at once.
A modest computer may handle sketches and ordinary illustrations comfortably but struggle with huge high-bit-depth canvases, large animation files, complex assistants, or many resource-heavy layers. If painting feels slow, reduce brush size, close unused documents, simplify the layer structure, and compare performance on a smaller test canvas before concluding that Krita itself is unsuitable.
Minimum operating-system requirements can change by release. One official page has listed Windows 8.1 or later, while macOS requirements vary between release pages. Check the requirement for the specific build you intend to install. Newer Windows Krita releases are not suitable for 32-bit Windows systems according to the official download information.
Where Krita is strongest
- Digital painting: customizable brushes, stabilizers, layers, masks, and a canvas-first interface.
- Concept art: fast sketching, texture work, perspective assistants, and large layered compositions.
- Comics and manga: line-art tools, panels, assistants, templates, and screentone-style workflows.
- Hand-drawn animation: timeline-based frame-by-frame work with onion skinning.
- Linux creative work: a capable native option where many commercial graphics applications are unavailable.
- Education and organizations: free installation, open-source licensing, and no subscription requirement.
- Custom workflows: adjustable dockers, shortcuts, workspaces, brushes, scripts, and plugins.
Where Krita falls short
Photography and raw development
Krita can edit raster images, but photography is not its central design priority. Raw development, catalog management, non-destructive retouching, and photo-specific automation may be better served by Photoshop, Affinity Photo, darktable, or RawTherapee.

Wayland is not supported.)
- NOTE: You can easily connect your phone to the art tablet via the OTG connector; while iPhone and iPad are NOT at the moment. The cursor will not show up in the SAMSUNG Galaxy S series at present. If you are not sure whether the product is compatible with your Phone or any help, please contact us.
Vector illustration and page layout
For vector-heavy artwork, logos, brochures, books, and complex typography, consider a dedicated application such as Inkscape, Affinity Designer, Illustrator, or a page-layout tool. Krita’s vector and text features do not make it a full layout suite.
Large studio pipelines
Krita may not provide the same asset-management integration, collaboration infrastructure, standardized interchange, or vendor support expected in a large commercial pipeline. Whether it works professionally depends on the specific team and file workflow, not on whether the license is free.
Complex Photoshop interchange
PSD support is useful but cannot guarantee perfect round-tripping. Flatten a copy or export a simpler interchange file when a recipient does not need editable Krita-specific structures. Keep the original .kra project as the source of truth.
Krita compared with alternatives
| Application | Choose it when… | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Photoshop | Photography, advanced retouching, Adobe Camera Raw, Creative Cloud, client compatibility, or Adobe-specific plugins dominate. | Proprietary software with a paid plan and a broader workflow ecosystem than Krita. |
| GIMP | You want free/open-source general image manipulation or an established GIMP plugin workflow. | Its model is more general image editing, while Krita is more deliberately painting-focused. |
| Affinity | You want commercial photo, vector, and layout applications in a polished design suite. | Not open source, not a zero-cost installation, and Linux availability may not meet Krita’s. |
| Clip Studio Paint | Manga, comics, specialized assets, 3D references, panels, or its animation-oriented workflow are priorities. | Paid software and not a fully free/open-source alternative. |
| Inkscape | Scalable vector illustration, logos, diagrams, and paths are central. | Not a replacement for Krita’s raster painting and brush workflow. |
| darktable or RawTherapee | Raw photography development and photo-management-oriented editing are central. | Not designed as a general digital-painting environment. |
See the official sites for GIMP, Affinity, and Clip Studio Paint before comparing current plans or pricing. Those details change by region and date.

How to decide whether Krita fits
- Identify the primary task: painting, comics, animation, photography, vector design, or layout.
- Check the platform: confirm the exact Windows, macOS, Linux, or Android requirement for the chosen release.
- Test the tablet: verify pressure, tilt, buttons, and driver behavior rather than assuming compatibility.
- Test real files: open representative PSD or client documents before migrating.
- Confirm color needs: check RGB/CMYK, ICC profiles, bit depth, HDR, and print specifications.
- Estimate project size: consider canvas dimensions, layers, frames, RAM, GPU drivers, and storage.
- Review support expectations: Krita offers extensive documentation and community resources, while commercial products may offer different vendor-support models.
- Check plugin dependence: verify that required extensions are maintained and trustworthy.
Bottom line
Krita is one of the strongest free choices for digital painting, illustration, comics, concept art, and hand-drawn 2D animation. Its GPL v3 license permits commercial artwork, its direct download is free, and its Linux support makes it particularly valuable to artists outside the Adobe ecosystem.
Choose Krita when painting is the priority. Choose another application when raw photography, advanced retouching, vector design, page layout, full animation production, or Adobe-specific collaboration is the real center of your work. In many professional workflows, the most practical answer is to use Krita alongside a specialized tool rather than expecting one application to do everything.
