Labor Day is a U.S. federal holiday honoring workers and their social and economic contributions. It falls on the first Monday in September; in 2026, it was observed on September 7. The holiday began as a labor-organized celebration in New York City in 1882 and became a federal legal holiday in 1894.
When is Labor Day?
In the United States, Labor Day is observed every year on the first Monday in September. The rule determines the date, so the calendar date changes from year to year. In 2026, the federal proclamation identified September 7 as Labor Day (Federal Register, Proclamation 10984); the next observance is September 6, 2027.
What does Labor Day recognize?
The U.S. Department of Labor describes Labor Day as “an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers” (Department of Labor, History of Labor Day). It is a national tribute to workers and their contributions, rather than a holiday tied to one occupation or industry.

How did Labor Day begin?
The first celebration in 1882
The Central Labor Union organized the first U.S. Labor Day celebration in New York City on September 5, 1882, according to the Congressional Research Service. GovInfo recounts that a parade drew an estimated 10,000–20,000 workers; that is a reported range, not a precise count (GovInfo, Labor Day 2026).
From labor-organized observance to federal holiday
Labor organizations and some states recognized Labor Day before Congress acted. On June 28, 1894, the 53rd Congress passed S.730, establishing the first Monday in September each year as a legal holiday (Chapter Law 118, 28 Stat. 96). The act’s language, as reproduced by GovInfo, says American labor helped raise the nation’s standard of living and that the labor movement brought the country closer to ideals of economic and political democracy. It calls it appropriate for the nation to pay tribute on Labor Day to the American worker. The sources establish the September date and legislative chronology, but do not establish a definitive political motive for Congress’s choice of September.

Yes. It is a federal holiday, but federal holiday schedules do not require every private employer, school, bank, transit agency, or local office to close. Whether a worker has the day off or receives holiday pay depends on the employer’s policy and any applicable agreement or law.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that, in March 2018, 91% of civilian workers who received paid holidays received Labor Day; the figures were 91% in private industry and 96% in state and local government. These percentages describe workers who received paid holidays, not all workers, and are historical rather than a current estimate (BLS, Holiday Profiles).
Federal employee observance rules are specific to federal service. For most federal employees, when a holiday falls on Saturday, it is observed on the preceding Friday for pay and leave purposes; when it falls on Sunday, the following Monday is observed. The Office of Personnel Management explains these rules. For other workplaces and services, check the relevant employer or institution for its schedule.

How is U.S. Labor Day different from May Day?
U.S. Labor Day is held on the first Monday in September. May 1, often called International Workers’ Day or May Day, is observed in many places as a workers’ holiday and is associated with labor history. They are distinct dates and observances; the U.S. holiday’s federal September date was established by the 1894 act, while the sources cited here do not establish a definitive reason Congress chose that date.
