A Lantern Festival card can pair lantern imagery and warm light with a wish for happiness, family reunion, blessings, or good fortune. The festival falls on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month; cards labeled “Lunar New Year” are more clearly documented than a large, distinct Lantern Festival card category.

What is the Lantern Festival, and when is it?

Also known as Shangyuan or Yuanxiao, the Lantern Festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month and marks the final celebration in the traditional Han Chinese New Year period, according to Taiwan’s Bureau of Cultural Heritage. Taiwan’s Central Mint also associates Yuan Xiao with that lunar-calendar date. Because the date follows the lunar calendar, it changes on the Gregorian calendar each year; check a reliable calendar for the specific year before adding a date to a card.

What to write in a Lantern Festival card

Choose a message that fits your relationship with the recipient. Lanterns, bright light, family gathering, blessings, and good fortune are grounded in festival-related imagery and themes. For example, you could write: “Wishing you a bright Lantern Festival filled with happiness, reunion, and good fortune.” This is an original English greeting, not a traditional quotation or translation.

A retailer’s Lunar New Year card uses the line “May happiness, light and luck surround you!” Its product page describes red and gold lanterns, fireworks, and lai see envelopes. That wording is retailer product copy, not evidence of a traditional Lantern Festival greeting or a translation from Chinese. See Hallmark’s card listing.

Lantern Festival card design ideas

Use imagery that evokes the occasion without implying that one region’s customs are universal. Taiwan’s heritage bureau describes lantern displays, prayers for blessings, rice balls, and lantern riddles, while noting that customs vary by region. Chunghwa Post’s commemorative stamp design brings together a traditional lantern, glutinous rice balls, and paired objects meant to suggest blessings and family gathering (Chunghwa Post’s design description).

  • Lanterns and warm light: A direct visual reference to lantern displays and brightness.
  • Shared food or gathering: Rice balls can evoke a festival custom; use them as one possible regional or cultural reference rather than a universal requirement.
  • Auspicious wishes: Keep the sentiment personal and clear—such as wishing the recipient happiness, blessings, or good fortune.

The Central Mint’s Yuan Xiao medal description connects chrysanthemums with auspiciousness and interprets its imagery as auspicious light (Central Mint medal page). Those are the mint’s explanations of its design, not universal rules for festival symbolism.

Are there greeting cards specifically for the Lantern Festival?

Examples of Lunar New Year cards with lantern artwork and seasonal postal cards are documented, but the available examples do not establish that Lantern Festival cards are a large or separately marketed category. Hallmark’s example is labeled a Lunar New Year card, even though it uses lantern imagery and offers customization. Hallmark’s Lunar New Year guide likewise discusses sending cards in the broader holiday context.

Postal issues are another seasonal format, but an announcement does not mean a card remains on sale. Macao’s government portal reported on 2 January 2026 that Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau had issued a Lunar Year of the Horse greeting card; the announcement listed MOP15 and said it could be mailed to all destinations without affixing stamps (Macao government announcement). These are details of that dated announcement, not confirmation of current stock or terms.

How to choose a card

Compare the actual label, format, artwork, and mailing details rather than assuming that every Lunar New Year card is intended specifically for the Lantern Festival.

  • Occasion wording: Check whether the card names the Lantern Festival or is more broadly labeled Lunar New Year.
  • Format: Decide whether you want a printed card, an electronic card, or a customizable design.
  • Artwork and message: Look for imagery and wishes that suit the recipient and the occasion; lanterns are one relevant choice.
  • Sending requirements: For a physical card, check whether an envelope is included and whether postage is needed for your destination.

Hallmark’s listing is one example that combines lantern-themed artwork with personalization and printed and e-card options; confirm the current options on the product page before ordering. A commemorative postage stamp or mint medal may share festival imagery, but it is a collectible, not a greeting card. Historical product pages do not establish current availability.
