There is no universal laser cutter speed-and-power setting. The right combination depends on the specific machine, material and thickness, whether you are cutting or engraving, and other controls such as focus, air assist and number of passes. Start with the manufacturer’s guidance for your exact model, then test on matching scrap before working on the final piece.
What speed and power mean
Speed is how quickly the laser head moves across the work. Power is the laser output setting. Together they influence how the material responds, but they are only part of the process: frequency, pass count, air assist, resolution and focus or controlled defocus can also affect results. Trotec’s guide to determining laser parameters describes these as factors to consider when choosing settings.
A speed-and-power pair should therefore be understood as a starting point for a particular machine, stock and operation—not a transferable recipe. AtomStack labels its official values starting points and recommends testing on scrap; it notes variation from material batch, environment, machine condition, focus and air assist. AtomStack’s parameter guide and xTool’s common-material settings guidance likewise frame parameters around specific materials and processing conditions.

Why cutting and engraving need different settings
Cutting
For a cut, the practical goal is to get through the intended thickness while achieving an acceptable edge. Speed affects cut quality, so a setting that produces a through-cut is not automatically the best setting for the finish. See Trotec’s explanation of laser parameters.
Engraving
For engraving, assess the mark’s contrast, darkness and detail rather than judging it by whether the laser penetrates the material. Cutting and engraving are different operations, so use the manufacturer’s setting guidance for the correct operation instead of reusing a cut setting.

Power is not a universal shortcut
Epilog says a higher-wattage CO2 tube can allow deeper cutting in one pass and faster engraving in some materials. That is a manufacturer’s general statement, not a guarantee for every machine, material or job; Epilog’s wattage guide does not establish a universal speed-to-power formula.
How to find settings for your machine and material
- Identify the exact setup. Confirm the laser technology and model, the material and its thickness, and whether the job is cutting or engraving.
- Find the matching manufacturer guidance. Check the settings table or software preset for your model and operation. For example, AtomStack organizes its official recommendations by model and processing type. Read the speed units and any material or thickness notes before using a value.
- Check the other process controls. Note any recommended pass count, focus position and air-assist condition. These can change the result even when speed and power stay the same.
- Test on matching scrap. Use a piece from the same material batch when possible. Make a small test, change one setting at a time where practical, and record the result. AtomStack specifically warns that batch, environment and machine condition can affect results.
- Choose based on the job goal. For cutting, check whether the cut goes through and inspect the edge. For engraving, assess contrast and detail. If the result misses the goal, adjust and test again rather than assuming a chart guarantees the outcome.
How to compare settings fairly
Change settings under controlled conditions so you can tell what caused a different result. When comparing speed or power, keep the machine, material, thickness, operation, focus and air-assist conditions constant. Record the pass count as well, since it is another parameter that affects processing.

There is no universal speed-to-power formula established by the manufacturer guidance cited here. The useful comparison is empirical: note the settings alongside whether the cut-through, edge quality, engraving contrast or detail, and processing time meet your needs. A settings chart can narrow the starting range, but your machine and stock determine the result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to record for repeatable results
Keep a settings log for each material and job. Record the machine and model, material and thickness, operation, speed and units, power, number of passes, focus and air-assist condition. These details make a successful result easier to reproduce and help explain why a setting may behave differently with another batch or setup.

Use manufacturer charts carefully
AtomStack and xTool both publish material-setting guidance, but their values are not interchangeable across machines. Consult the table or preset for your own model, verify that it matches the operation and material, and treat it as a starting point rather than a tested guarantee for your particular stock.
Check safety before processing unfamiliar stock
A speed-and-power chart is not a safety protocol. Before processing unfamiliar material, consult the machine manual, the material supplier’s safety information, ventilation requirements and applicable workplace guidance. The settings guidance cited above does not establish safe processing conditions for every material.
