This project box uses interlocking acrylic pieces instead of glue: the corners lock together, and a specific assembly order lets the box close while remaining openable for access to its contents. The original Make article describes the design by ITP student Michael Milazzo and gives the key assembly detail: the smallest piece goes in second to last.

What makes this box glueless
Make presented the design as a twist on the familiar finger-jointed box. Rather than relying on adhesive to hold the panels together, its parts fit together like a puzzle. As Michael Milazzo is quoted by Make: “The pieces fit into each other like a puzzle, fitting tightly together to give you a solid, closed box. At the corners, one piece will slide over the other, locking it into place. The smallest piece must be placed second to last.”
That corner-to-corner engagement is the defining feature: one piece slides over another to lock the assembly. Make also describes a practical benefit of the glue-free design: the box can be taken apart to reach its interior. That is a design benefit, not evidence of a measured strength rating or repeated-assembly lifespan.

Assembly order matters
The description identifies one sequence-specific instruction: install the smallest piece second to last. The pieces are designed to fit together, so follow the cut-file or project instructions for the remaining order rather than forcing a panel that does not seat naturally. The cited account does not give a complete numbered assembly procedure.

Acrylic sheet stock is the featured material, but Make does not specify the sheet grade or thickness used for Milazzo’s box. The article also does not establish a laser model, cut settings, joint tolerance, or performance measurements. Choose stock that is compatible with the machine and the dimensions in the cut file; do not treat an unspecified setting as a proven value for this design.

Box-design tools illustrate the variables that can affect a cut file. The Online Box Generator display-case page offers fields for dimensions, material thickness, finger-joint settings, and burn correction. PlexiSystem’s AcrylicBuilder Pro documentation describes acrylic support, finger joints, kerf compensation, and DXF export. Those are general tool capabilities, not the settings used for Milazzo’s box, and neither source establishes that its tool recreates this particular interlocking design.
