Lavender is an aromatic shrub whose fragrant flower spikes rise above narrow foliage that is usually grey-green or silvery. Purple and blue-purple blooms are common, but some cultivars flower in pink or white. Green-looking flowering stems can sit above the plant’s paler leaves; the wording alone does not identify a particular lavender species, cultivar, place, or bloom date.

What lavender looks like in bloom

Lavender belongs to the genus Lavandula. Its flowers grow in spikes above narrow, aromatic leaves, commonly grey-green or silver-grey. Purple and blue-purple are familiar flower colors, while mauve, pink, and white forms are also cultivated. The Royal Horticultural Society describes the genus as having fragrant summer flowers above grey-green or silver-grey foliage (RHS growing guide; RHS lavender overview).

A green stem beneath a flower spike is compatible with lavender’s usual appearance; foliage color and flower color describe different parts of the plant. A general description cannot establish a precise species or cultivar. For a closer identification, useful details include a close view of the flower head and leaves, overall plant shape, location, and season.

How to distinguish common lavender types

Feature English lavender and lavandin French and other tender types
Flower shape English lavender has dense, fragrant spikes; color varies by cultivar. Some types, including French lavender, have dense flower heads topped with conspicuous bracts that look like ears.
Flowering time English lavender begins flowering in early summer; lavandin generally flowers later. Timing varies by type and local conditions; there is no single season that applies to all tender lavenders.
Winter tolerance English lavender and its hybrids are generally hardier, though drainage and local winter conditions still matter. Less hardy and often shorter-lived; container growing and frost protection may be appropriate.
Growing conditions Full sun and free-draining soil; avoid winter waterlogging. Sun and good drainage remain important, with additional shelter from frost and excess winter wet.

RHS notes that French lavender (Lavandula stoechas) and other tender types can have a camphor-like scent, unlike the strongly aromatic foliage and flowers often associated with English lavender. Check the plant label and local winter conditions before choosing a type (RHS English lavender; RHS growing guide).

When lavender flowers

Bloom time depends on type and growing conditions. The RHS gives late spring and summer as the general flowering period; English lavender starts in early summer, while lavandin tends to bloom later. Weather and location can shift the timing, so a broad description such as “summer-blooming” is more reliable than assigning a date to an unidentified plant (RHS growing guide; RHS English lavender).

Conditions that help lavender thrive

Choose sun and drainage

Plant lavender in full sun and fast-draining soil. It can manage poor, dry, or moderately fertile ground, including chalky and alkaline soils, but heavy clay and waterlogged conditions are poor fits. In heavier soil, the RHS suggests planting on a raised mound, ridge, or bed to keep roots from sitting in wet ground (RHS growing guide).

Adjust watering to the plant’s age and setting

Water newly planted lavender regularly through its first summer. Once established in the ground, it is drought tolerant and rarely needs watering except during severe drought. Pots dry faster and need summer watering, but keep container compost comparatively dry in winter. Lavender generally does not need feeding because it prefers soil low in nutrients (RHS growing guide).

Use containers where drainage or winter protection is a concern

For container growing, use a large pot with drainage holes. The RHS recommends peat-free multipurpose or loam-based compost with coarse grit added to improve drainage. A container can also make it easier to shelter less hardy types from frost and excess winter wet (RHS growing guide).

Pruning and keeping the plant compact

Deadhead spent flower spikes if you want to encourage further flowers. In late summer, after flowering, prune annually by removing spent stalks and only a little leafy growth. Avoid cutting into old woody stems: lavender does not readily produce new growth from old wood. If you leave late-season flower heads in place, they may provide food for seed-eating birds (RHS growing guide).

The RHS also describes propagation from softwood or semi-ripe cuttings in early to midsummer and hardwood cuttings after flowering. These are options for gardeners who want to raise new plants from an existing one (RHS growing guide).
