Greg Hildebrandt, the fantasy artist known for working with his twin brother Tim as the Brothers Hildebrandt, died at 85, Lucasfilm reported in its memorial. The inspected Lucasfilm memorial and family-linked obituary do not state a specific date or cause of death. His legacy includes Tolkien calendars, widely circulated early Star Wars promotional art, illustrated classics and Marvel trading cards.
A life in art, from Detroit to Middle-earth and a galaxy far, far away
Greg Hildebrandt was born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 23, 1939, with his twin brother Tim, according to the Leber-Lakeside Funeral Home obituary. For much of his career, he worked alongside Tim as the Brothers Hildebrandt, known for richly colored fantasy illustrations.
The brothers’ work appeared in calendars, art books, posters and other merchandise, Lucasfilm says. Greg also pursued a solo career beginning in the early 1980s, according to the family obituary. It is therefore important to distinguish projects credited to the partnership from Greg’s individual work.
The Hildebrandts’ Star Wars artwork
The Brothers Hildebrandt created artwork for the original Star Wars marketing campaign. Lucasfilm says they painted the well-known image in 36 hours. The artwork circulated on shirts, buttons, pin-up posters and newspaper advertisements during the campaign’s initial months.

That image should not be confused with the film’s theatrical release poster: Lucasfilm identifies Tom Jung’s design as the poster ultimately used for the release. The Hildebrandts’ image was a widely circulated promotional design, but describing it as the final theatrical poster is inaccurate.
Lucasfilm also says Greg and Tim created 100 new pieces of artwork for the 1996 Shadows of the Empire campaign. These source-reported figures are attributed to Lucasfilm.

The Tolkien calendars that established the Brothers Hildebrandt
Before their Star Wars work, the Brothers Hildebrandt became prominent through illustrations inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. The Leber-Lakeside Funeral Home obituary identifies their Ballantine Books calendars as published in 1976, 1977 and 1978.
Lucasfilm describes their Tolkien work as appearing in calendars, art books, posters and other merchandise. Those projects helped establish the brothers’ reputation in fantasy illustration.
