Lens flare is stray light that reaches a camera’s sensor or film after reflecting inside the lens instead of following the intended image-forming path. It can wash out contrast or create visible ghost shapes—but it can also be a deliberate creative effect.

When a bright light source shines into a lens, some light can reflect between optical surfaces and reach the sensor or film as unwanted light. Because it does not contribute to the intended image in the usual way, it may appear as flare. Lens coatings are designed to reduce reflections, but they cannot eliminate flare in every situation. Cambridge in Colour explains the causes and appearance of lens flare, while Canon describes reflections between lens elements and the image sensor.
How does lens flare look?
Ghosting
Ghosting is the more distinct kind of flare: reflected light may form bright polygons, rings, or streaks. Its shape and placement depend on the lens and the positions of the camera and light source.

- Screw-Mount Lens Hood for a Secure, Rattle-Free Fit: Unlike clip-on hoods that rely on a separate ring mechanism, this 58mm lens hood threads directly onto your lens for a single-piece connection with no wobbling and no cross-threading. Locked in place, it stays put through active shooting. Events, wildlife, and travel photographers can count on it to stay secure where a shifting hood is not an option.
- Tulip Lens Hood with 360 Rear Locking Ring: Camera lens hood features a built-in rear locking ring that lets you rotate to any position and lock exactly where you need it. Shading control is fully adjustable for any light condition. Most competing hoods clip into a fixed position with no rotation adjustment, making this a meaningful upgrade for shooting in mixed or directional light.

The flower petal shape is engineered for standard and zoom lenses, blocking unwanted light while maintaining full frame coverage with zero vignetting. Hard rubber construction adds a layer of protection, absorbing minor impacts and shielding the front element from accidental bumps and scratches during outdoor shooting.

Veiling flare
Veiling flare is a broader wash of light that can make an image look hazy, washed out, or lower in contrast. Ghosting and veiling can occur together; flare does not have one fixed color or shape. Canon Australia outlines these two forms.
Why do I get lens flare in my photos?
A bright source—such as the sun or a lamp—can send light into the lens, where internal reflections produce flare. The effect changes with the lens and with the light’s position relative to the camera and frame. A small change in camera angle or composition can therefore alter or remove a particular flare pattern. Sony recommends changing the composition and/or subject position so a strong source does not enter the lens.

How can you avoid lens flare?
- Reframe or shift your position. Try a small change in camera angle or composition to keep the offending light out of the lens. When the source is just outside the frame, move until it is no longer shining directly into the lens, or position an object to block it.
- Use a compatible lens hood for off-frame light. A hood shades the lens from stray light when its position allows the hood to block it. Choose one made for your lens; a hood cannot be relied on to block a source included in the composition. Adobe discusses lens hoods and flare.
- Check any added filter. If flare appeared after you fitted a clear or protective filter, compare a frame with and without it when it is safe and appropriate to do so. An extra glass surface can contribute reflections. Tamron discusses lens flare and reflections.
Coatings can reduce reflections, but no lens or coating guarantees flare-free images in every lighting and framing situation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you use lens flare creatively?
Yes. Photographers may choose to keep a starburst, ring, streak, or soft haze when it supports the intended mood. Decide whether the effect helps the picture: adjust the framing and the light’s position until the flare contributes without obscuring the subject. The same sensitivity to source placement that helps suppress flare can help shape it intentionally. Adobe and Tamron describe creative uses of flare.
