Leonardo da Vinci’s proposed Golden Horn bridge was never built, but a 2019 MIT study found that a small model of its unusual stone-arch design could stand and tolerate some movement at its supports. That is evidence the geometry was structurally feasible under the researchers’ assumptions—not proof that a full-size bridge could have been built or safely operated at the site.
What bridge did Leonardo propose?
In 1502–1503, Leonardo submitted a design for a bridge linking Galata and Istanbul across the Golden Horn after an invitation from Sultan Bayezid II. The proposal was a single, flattened masonry arch, about 280 meters long according to MIT. MIT reported that this would have made it roughly ten times longer than typical bridges of the period.

The arch was designed to leave clearance for sailboats below. Its abutments—the structures supporting the arch at either end—splayed outward, a feature intended to address the arch’s sideways thrust. This was a different project from Leonardo’s separate small, interlocking-beam concept often called a self-supporting bridge.
Why was the design rejected?
Leonardo did not receive the commission, but the available sources do not establish a definitive reason. A 2021 City College of New York article characterizes the proposal as risky and attributes that view to the Ottoman ruler; MIT’s account does not document a technical rejection rationale. It is more accurate to say the bridge was not selected than to claim that it was rejected for a proven structural flaw.

How did MIT test the design?
MIT researchers Karly Bast, MEng ’19, professor John Ochsendorf, and undergraduate Michelle Xie examined historical documents, materials, construction methods, and the site, then assessed the design’s geometric stability and its response to support movement. Their physical model represented the bridge at 1:500 scale.
- Build the model: The team 3D-printed 126 blocks and assembled them on temporary scaffolding. MIT reported that the model was about 32 inches long and that printing each block took about six hours.
- Close the arch: After placing the keystone—the central block that completes the arch—the researchers removed the scaffolding. The model stood without mortar or fasteners.
- Move the supports: The team placed the model on two movable platforms. It tolerated horizontal movement, deforming slightly before it eventually collapsed.
“It’s all held together by compression only,” Bast told MIT News on October 9, 2019. The arch’s shape channels its weight through the blocks into the supports; the blocks remain stable because they press against one another.

What does the experiment show—and what does it not?
The test supports the feasibility of the studied geometry and model assumptions. MIT’s thesis record says the combined structural and geotechnical analysis supported feasibility. The model also showed that the arch could remain standing as its supports shifted horizontally to some degree.
It was not a full-size bridge, a real Golden Horn construction trial, or an earthquake test. A successful model cannot establish every condition a full-scale bridge would face, including actual site behavior and practical construction constraints. Bast described the model’s success after the scaffolding came out this way: “when I put the keystone in, I thought, ‘this is going to work.’ And after that, we took the scaffolding out, and it stood up.”

Why use stone, and could the design be useful today?
The MIT team reasoned that a bridge of the proposed span required stone because wood or brick could not carry the loads. The modeled arch relied on gravity and compression rather than mortar or mechanical fasteners. Bast summarized the role of the shape by saying, “It’s the power of geometry.”
That does not make the Renaissance design a direct blueprint for modern bridges. Modern materials and construction methods offer lighter and stronger options; Bast cautioned that the historic proposal may have little direct practical application for contemporary bridge designers. Its value is instead as a striking example of how geometry can make a demanding masonry structure stable. As she put it, “you don’t necessarily need fancy technology to come up with the best ideas.”

Was Leonardo’s bridge ever built?
No. Leonardo’s Golden Horn proposal did not receive the commission, and the MIT work tested a scale model rather than a full-size structure. A later bridge in Norway inspired by the design uses modern materials; it is not evidence that Leonardo’s proposed Renaissance masonry bridge was built or tested at full scale.
