Leonora Hamill’s South Kensington duplex feels cozy because it is intensely personal rather than conventionally coordinated. Pink and terra-cotta reception rooms, a sinuous central staircase, inherited curtains, travel finds, family art and practical children’s furniture all share the same rooms. The result is a home that can host a formal dinner yet still accommodate toys and everyday family life.

The home was profiled in Architectural Digest on March 14, 2022, in a story by Cosmo Brockway, photographed by Helen Cathcart and styled by Rebecca McEvoy. Hamill, an interior designer, created the London apartment with her husband, Hugh Barker, after six years in Manhattan. Its strongest lesson for anyone planning a painted interior is simple: start with memory and architecture, then let color, fabric and objects accumulate around them.

What makes Leonora Hamill’s London home feel cozy?

Four decisions do most of the work. First, Hamill anchors the apartment to South Kensington, a place she loved as a child. Second, she mixes periods and origins instead of buying a matching suite. Third, textiles soften nearly every major piece of furniture. Finally, the architecture is treated as part of the decoration: the reception rooms are painted in shades of pink and terra-cotta, while the apartment’s sinuous staircase becomes a visual and practical center.

That combination produces warmth without making the home look casual or unfinished. A 1950s chair can sit beside an antique credenza; a child’s daybed can share a house with art and decorative objects; an inherited curtain can be more important than a new purchase. Coziness here means visual density, tactile surfaces and a clear sense that the rooms belong to a particular family.

A home tied to a specific place

Hamill grew up in London until she was nine, then lived in Manhattan with Barker for six years before returning to London in 2019. The couple found the apartment online and signed the lease remotely, without seeing it in person first. Hamill calls herself “a homing pigeon” and recalls, “There was this alabaster-white square I had adored since I was a little girl.” Her attachment to the neighborhood explains why the apartment reads as a return, not a generic London address.

The source describes a duplex in South Kensington, but it does not give a floor area, construction date, rent, purchase price or measured room dimensions. Those omissions matter if you are trying to reproduce the arrangement: the atmosphere can be studied, but the exact proportions cannot be inferred from the feature.

How the architecture sets the mood

The sinuous staircase as the apartment’s core

The staircase is described as the apartment’s central feature. A curved circulation route naturally slows the eye and links the levels, so it can carry color, objects and family activity without requiring another piece of furniture. The profile notes toys on the staircase, an unusually direct sign that this is a working family home rather than a staged set.

For a painter, a prominent stair is an opportunity to connect floors with one continuous color story. The article does not identify a stair paint color or finish, so do not assume the staircase matches the reception rooms. Instead, test how the chosen wall colors appear at the turns, under daylight and beneath artificial light. Curved surfaces reveal lap marks and uneven coverage more readily than flat walls; careful preparation and consistent brush loading are especially important.

Pink and terra-cotta reception rooms

Decorative painters Lionel Bourcelot and Marine Caillé of Atelier Kerien painted the double reception rooms in shades of pink and terra-cotta. The source does not provide brand names, paint codes, sheen levels or a single standardized color. The important point is the relationship: related warm hues give separate rooms a theatrical identity while allowing them to read as one suite.

When adapting the idea, choose colors by observing the room’s fixed elements first. Lay large sample boards against the flooring, upholstery and window fabric, and view them in morning, afternoon and evening light. A pink that looks delicate beside one textile may turn chalky beside another; terra-cotta can become either muted clay or vivid orange depending on the surrounding wood and metal. Sampling is more reliable than copying a color name from a photograph.

The double reception rooms, room by room

Living room: collected comfort

The living room combines 1950s armchairs by Gigi Radice for Minotti, a custom-made ottoman, an O. Henry House sofa and a vintage Italian floor lamp. Patterned curtains and pillows prevent the larger furniture from becoming a neutral block. The curtains are inherited from Hamill’s mother and made from Braquenié fabric; the pillows use textiles gathered from around the world.

Notice how many kinds of softness are layered together: upholstered seating, a padded ottoman, fabric at the windows and smaller cushions that can be moved. That arrangement supports conversation and lounging without requiring a single “cozy” object. The vintage floor lamp adds a pool of light at furniture level, which is more intimate than relying only on a central ceiling fixture.

Dining room: a deliberate sense of theater

The dining room was the room that persuaded Hamill to take the apartment. “It was the dining room that besotted us,” she says. She wanted to use it for proper entertaining and “give it a sense of theater.” Its furnishings explain that reaction: an Art Deco chandelier from Turin, an antique French credenza, chairs in the style of Carlo Mollino, an Indonesian batik panel found at Belgravia’s Joss Graham gallery and a late-19th-century Scottish cabinet in the style of Napoleon III.

The table setting extends the mixture rather than simplifying it. Hamill uses Wedgwood china and Italian Art Nouveau glasses, with a Cabana tablecloth given to her by her friend Martina Mondadori. The objects come from different periods and places, but the room has a clear purpose: a table, strong overhead light and storage for serving pieces make it ready for guests instead of merely decorative.

Primary bedroom Bennison fabric on the headboard and Roman shades Repeating one textile across bed and windows visually encloses the sleeping area.
Sebastian’s room IKEA daybed dressed with textiles A practical bed becomes part of the home’s textile language without pretending to be an antique.

Textiles are the quiet infrastructure of the design

Fabric is not an accent added after the paint. It is the element that connects rooms, generations and continents. Hamill’s living-room curtains came from her mother. Cushions are made from vintage Japanese silks and gold liturgical vestments, while the primary bedroom uses Bennison fabric on both the headboard and Roman shades. These choices bring irregular weave, sheen and history into spaces that could otherwise feel polished but impersonal.

Inherited or vintage textiles also explain why the palette can be bold without becoming harsh. Fabric introduces intermediate tones between wall and furniture, absorbs sound and changes appearance as it folds. If you are painting around an existing textile, pull several small color samples from the cloth rather than matching its most obvious hue. The goal is a color that lets the textile remain legible, not a wall that competes with it.

Working with valuable or fragile cloth

The profile identifies the provenance of several fabrics but does not give cleaning instructions, fiber tests or conservation advice. Treat vintage silk, metallic embroidery and liturgical textiles as potentially delicate. Before moving furniture or painting nearby, consult a textile conservator about dust, sunlight and attachment methods. A painter should mask and protect fabrics completely; do not assume a drop cloth alone will prevent fine spray or solvent damage.

A family home that does not hide family life

Hamill and Barker’s apartment accommodates children without abandoning the collected scheme. Sebastian’s room contains an IKEA daybed dressed with textiles, and toys appear on the staircase. The daybed model, dimensions, mattress size, price and current availability are not identified, so it should be treated as a design cue rather than a product recommendation.

The useful principle is proportionality. Keep hard-wearing, replaceable items where children use them, and reserve fragile or irreplaceable pieces for locations with less direct impact. A room can contain antiques and toys when circulation is clear and storage is intentional. The feature does not state which finishes were used for washability, so do not infer that the painted walls are scrubbable or specially engineered for children.

Objects that make the rooms specific

The apartment’s personality comes from small things as much as from major furniture. The feature mentions Chinese eglomise chargers, Vietnamese basketwork, Kashmiri papier-mâché letter openers and panels of Iroquois beadwork. These are not presented as a themed collection; they are evidence of travel, curiosity and long use.

Art is similarly personal. Hamill took a photograph of Mumbai’s Sir J. J. School of Art, which appears among the home’s visual material. A photograph made by the resident carries a different emotional weight from an interchangeable print because it records where she looked and what she chose to preserve.

For walls, this argues for editing rather than empty minimalism. Group objects by scale, color or story, leave enough breathing room to see each piece and check that hanging heights work from the room’s normal seating position. The source does not provide an inventory, valuation or hanging plan, so any reconstruction should remain interpretive.

Why Hamill’s background matters to the rooms

Hamill studied art history at the Courtauld Institute and Italian Renaissance painting at Oxford. She also spent a period in Milan dedicated to fine-art photography, an experience the profile connects to her appreciation of midcentury furniture and textiles. That education helps explain the apartment’s confidence with visual contrast: historical references are used as material, not as rules that demand a single period style.

The article mentions projects in New York and a Chester Square home being refreshed, but those references describe her work at the time of publication in 2022. They should not be read as a current portfolio or as evidence of later commissions.

A practical painting plan inspired by the apartment

Hamill’s home is not a paint-by-numbers scheme, yet its method can guide a real project. Use the following sequence when a room needs more warmth and character.

  1. Identify the permanent story. Write down the place, memories or objects you want the room to honor. In Hamill’s case, South Kensington and family history come first.
  2. Inventory the fabrics and furniture. Photograph upholstery, curtains, rugs and wood finishes in the actual room. Mark which pieces are inherited, fragile or impossible to replace.
  3. Choose a connected palette. Test a family of related warm colors, as the reception rooms use pink and terra-cotta, rather than selecting unrelated feature walls.
  4. Sample at full scale. Paint large boards and move them around the room. Check corners, curved walls, stair turns and the area behind furniture in changing light.
  5. Plan the sequence of work. Repair cracks, clean surfaces and prime stains before applying color. Complete high or difficult areas before installing delicate curtains and upholstered pieces.
  6. Layer light after paint cures. Use the room’s actual lamps and evening lighting to judge whether the color supports conversation, dining or rest. Hamill’s vintage Italian floor lamp shows how a low, warm light can be part of the composition.
  7. Place objects last. Hang art and arrange travel finds only after the painted backdrop and major furniture are settled. Leave safe circulation for children and guests.

What not to copy literally

  • Do not assume a photograph reveals the exact paint formula, sheen or number of coats.
  • Do not buy a daybed expecting it to be Sebastian’s model; the published feature names only the IKEA brand and not the model or specifications.
  • Do not treat vintage Japanese silks, gold vestments or inherited curtains as ordinary upholstery yardage.
  • Do not reproduce an object collection without considering provenance, cultural context, condition and secure display.

The design decisions at a glance

Design question Hamill’s documented answer Transferable lesson
How should color relate to architecture? The double reception rooms use pink and terra-cotta, while the sinuous staircase anchors the duplex. Use adjacent rooms and circulation routes to build a connected palette, then test it on every surface.
How can a room feel soft without looking bland? Combine upholstered seating, patterned curtains, a custom ottoman and pillows made from varied textiles. Layer texture and pattern before adding more furniture.
How can antiques coexist with modern family use? Historical furniture and art share the apartment with a practical daybed and children’s toys. Separate fragile items from high-impact zones and make everyday pieces visually intentional.
How can entertaining feel special? The dining room pairs a strong chandelier with furniture and tableware from different periods and places. Give the room one clear social function, then let collected details create atmosphere.

What the 2022 feature establishes—and what it does not

The profile establishes the apartment’s location, family context, principal rooms, named designers and makers, several textile histories, and Hamill’s educational background. It does not establish a current renovation status, paint products, technical specifications, room measurements, furniture prices or availability. Those details would require separate, up-to-date verification and should not be inferred from the photographs.

That boundary is useful for anyone planning a similar interior. Copy the underlying decisions—place-based color, layered cloth, mixed provenance and room-by-room practicality—rather than chasing an unavailable object or an unverified paint code. The home’s coziness comes from relationships among elements, not from one purchase.
