In most gardens, leaving native ladybugs—more precisely, lady beetles or ladybird beetles—alone is a sound choice. Many species eat aphids and other soft-bodied pests, their larvae hunt too, and a garden with shelter and suitable flowers can support a continuing local population. They are not universally beneficial, however: Mexican bean beetles and squash beetles feed on plants. Identify a beetle that is damaging your crops before deciding to protect it.

What gardeners mean by “ladybug”
“Ladybug” is the familiar name, but extension services generally use lady beetle or ladybird beetle. The group contains many species with different diets. A red or spotted beetle is not automatically a helpful predator, and markings alone are not a reliable identification method.

The useful question is not simply “Is this a ladybug?” It is “Which species is this, and what is it eating?” Predatory species usually occur on plants that hold aphids or other small prey. Plant-feeding species may be found directly on the crop they are damaging. If identification is uncertain, photograph the insect and the damage, then ask your local county or university extension service.

Reason 1: Many lady beetles eat aphids and other garden pests
Adults and larvae both contribute
Many lady beetle species are predators. Adults and larvae can consume aphids, and some species also feed on mites, scale insects, whiteflies, insect eggs or other small prey. The larva is often the least familiar stage: it is elongated and may be covered with small spines or bumps, so gardeners sometimes mistake it for a pest and remove it. Leaving both stages in place protects the predators that are already working on your plants.
Predation is especially useful when pests are concentrated on tender growth. Aphids commonly gather on new leaves and stems, where a small predator can reach them without the gardener having to spray the whole plant. Lady beetles are one part of the garden food web, not a guarantee that every aphid will disappear.
Look for evidence before intervening
Inspect the undersides of leaves, shoot tips and flower stems. If you find lady beetle adults or larvae among aphids, avoid disturbing that area for a few days and check again. Record whether the pest population is expanding, stable or shrinking. This simple observation distinguishes a manageable colony from an outbreak that needs additional action.
Do not assume that a beetle on a plant is eating the plant. Predatory lady beetles may be hunting insects that are hidden in the same foliage. Conversely, visible chewing damage on beans or squash is a reason to identify the beetle rather than automatically leave it alone.

Reason 2: They add natural pest control and can reduce pressure to spray
A predator is a management tool, not a cure
Lady beetles can help keep pest populations in check while you use a broader integrated pest-management approach. Their presence may reduce the need for an immediate insecticide application, particularly when pest numbers are low and plants are still growing normally. The aim is not to eradicate every insect; it is to prevent unacceptable damage while preserving useful organisms.
First identify the pest and assess the damage. A few aphids on a vigorous plant may be tolerable, while a rapidly expanding infestation on a stressed seedling may require prompt action. Lady beetles cannot substitute for identifying the pest, correcting plant stress or choosing a treatment that fits the situation.
Broad insecticides can remove allies as well as pests
Many insecticides harm beneficial insects along with the target pest. A broad application can kill lady beetles, their larvae and other predators, leaving the garden with fewer natural controls after the spray residue fades. If treatment is necessary, follow the product label and consider the narrowest effective approach rather than spraying an entire bed by default.

Limiting unnecessary pesticide use also protects the predators that may arrive later. Extension guidance treats pesticide reduction as a habitat practice: a garden cannot retain natural enemies if routine applications repeatedly remove them.

Use monitoring to decide when action is justified
- Identify: Determine the insect and distinguish feeding damage from cosmetic blemishes.
- Check trend: Reinspect the same plants after several days to see whether pests are increasing.
- Check plant health: Vigorous plants often tolerate minor feeding better than drought-stressed or newly transplanted plants.
- Protect predators: When lady beetles or larvae are present, avoid broad sprays unless the damage warrants treatment.
- Escalate carefully: If the pest continues to spread, obtain local extension advice on a targeted control compatible with beneficial insects.
Reason 3: Your garden can support naturally occurring lady beetles
Provide flowers that offer accessible food
Extension recommendations include shallow-flowered plants such as sweet alyssum, coriander and dill. Their flower shapes make food more accessible to many small beneficial insects. Plant them where they will not interfere with the main crop, and choose varieties and planting times suited to your climate.
No single flower guarantees that a particular lady beetle species will arrive, remain or control a specific pest. Flowers are support habitat, not a biological-control switch. The best results come from combining flowering resources with suitable prey, shelter and cautious pesticide practices.
Keep sheltered places for overwintering
Lady beetles need protected places to survive unfavorable weather and return to activity. Retain some sheltered garden habitat instead of keeping every edge bare and intensively cleaned. Dense vegetation and other undisturbed cover can provide refuge; the exact shelter that works depends on the species and local climate.

When clearing beds, inspect clusters of beetles before disturbing them. If you must remove vegetation, move it gradually and avoid destroying obvious overwintering groups. This is a low-cost way to preserve insects that may help the following season.

Reduce practices that make the habitat temporary
A garden can offer flowers for a week and then lose its value if all vegetation is removed or sprayed. Stagger flowering plants where practical, retain some cover, and limit broad pesticide applications. These measures support local populations without requiring you to buy and release insects.
Not every lady beetle is beneficial
Plant-feeding exceptions matter
Cornell and Maryland extension sources identify plant-feeding exceptions, including Mexican bean beetles and squash beetles. These insects can damage beans, squash and related crops rather than control pests. Their presence on a crop, combined with characteristic chewing injury, should trigger identification—not an automatic decision to leave them undisturbed.
Separate predator damage from beetle damage
Predatory lady beetles are usually associated with prey colonies. Plant-feeding beetles are associated with holes, skeletonized leaves or other direct feeding injury on the crop. These clues are not enough for a certain identification, because appearance and damage can vary. Use a local extension service when the decision affects a valuable planting or when photographs are inconclusive.

Purchasing adult beetles is not an uncomplicated shortcut to aphid control. University of Minnesota Extension notes that released beetles may fly away and that multiple releases may be needed for a large aphid outbreak. University of Nevada, Reno Extension also raises dispersal and ecological concerns. For home gardeners, extension guidance generally favors supporting local populations, while recognizing that release practices and regulations can differ by region.

| Consideration | Naturally occurring lady beetles | Bought-and-released beetles |
|---|---|---|
| Likelihood of remaining | They may stay when food, flowers and shelter meet their needs. | Adults may disperse soon after release; retention is not assured. |
| Fit to the pest | Local species are already responding to prey available in your garden. | The species, life stage and number released may not match the pest, crop or outbreak size. |
| Scale of control | Natural populations can build or decline with local conditions. | Large aphid outbreaks may require repeated releases, according to University of Minnesota Extension. |
| Ecological and sourcing concerns | Supporting local insects avoids transporting or concentrating insects from elsewhere. | Dispersal and ecological effects require consideration; local rules and sourcing practices vary. |
| What supports success | Flowers, overwintering shelter and limited broad-spectrum pesticide use. | Release alone does not replace pest identification, habitat or monitoring. |
If you are considering a release for a greenhouse, commercial crop or a documented biological-control program, consult local extension guidance first. Ask which species is being sold, where it was sourced, whether it is permitted in your area and how its use fits the target pest. For a typical home garden, improving habitat is the safer general recommendation.
A practical way to welcome the right lady beetles
- Document the insect and damage. Take clear photographs of the adult or larva, the whole plant and the affected leaves. Note the crop and the location.
- Confirm the identification. Ask a local extension service if you cannot distinguish a predatory species from a plant-feeding beetle such as a Mexican bean or squash beetle.
- Map the pest. Check several plants and the undersides of leaves. Record whether aphids or another prey are present and whether numbers are changing.
- Add suitable flowers. Where climate and space allow, plant shallow-flowered options such as alyssum, coriander or dill. Do not treat any one plant as a guaranteed attractant.
- Protect shelter. Retain some sheltered, undisturbed habitat for insects that need refuge during unfavorable weather and overwintering.
- Review pesticide plans. Avoid broad applications when damage is minor or when predators are active. If treatment is necessary, seek local advice on a targeted option and follow its label.
- Recheck before escalating. Inspect the same plants after several days. If predators are present and damage is acceptable, continue monitoring; if the pest is spreading, obtain a control recommendation matched to the confirmed pest.
What to do when the plan does not work
Aphids are still increasing
Recheck the identification and plant condition. Lady beetles may be absent, too few for the size of the outbreak or unable to remain without shelter and food. Contact extension for a targeted response rather than assuming that more released beetles will solve the problem.
Beetles are chewing your beans or squash
Stop treating them as beneficial until the species is confirmed. Photograph the beetles and the injury, then ask a local extension service whether you are dealing with a plant-feeding exception such as a Mexican bean beetle or squash beetle.
No lady beetles are visible
Absence today does not prove that the habitat is unsuitable. Check flowering plants and pest colonies at different times, retain shelter and avoid routine broad-spectrum sprays. Habitat improvements support naturally occurring insects but cannot guarantee a particular species or arrival date.
You already sprayed
Follow the product label for reentry and other precautions, then avoid additional applications unless monitoring shows they are needed. Give surviving beneficial insects suitable flowers and shelter, and seek local guidance before choosing another treatment.
The bottom line for a home garden
Let an identified predatory lady beetle remain: it may consume aphids, mites, scale insects, whiteflies, insect eggs or other small prey, and both adults and larvae can help. Build the conditions that let local populations persist—shallow flowers such as alyssum, coriander or dill, sheltered habitat and fewer unnecessary broad pesticide applications. Treat “ladybug” as a starting point for identification, not a guarantee of benefit, and do not rely on purchased releases as a sure fix for an aphid outbreak.
