Verdict: The Lettuce Grow Farmstand is worth its high upfront price only for households that will use a 18-, 24- or 36-plant vertical garden regularly, have suitable light or room for the indoor Glow Rings, and accept recurring seedling and nutrient costs. It is a convenience-and-hobby purchase, not a proven money-saving replacement for grocery shopping. Lettuce Grow lists the Original Farmstand at $699 and its Outdoor Farmstand configurations at $574, $649 and $799, depending on size.

Lettuce Grow’s published specifications, prices, trial and warranty terms are stated, but independent yield, electricity use, maintenance time, annual operating cost or payback are not. The decision therefore comes down to how much you value visible, home-grown produce and whether you can keep the system supplied, lit and maintained.

What the Lettuce Grow Farmstand is
The Farmstand is a freestanding vertical hydroponic garden. Plants grow in stacked levels rather than in soil, with a pump circulating water from a reservoir through the planting columns. Lettuce Grow sells it in three capacities: 18 plants for the small version, 24 for medium and 36 for large. Each level holds six plants, so the system grows upward while using a relatively small floor area.
The Original Farmstand product page lists a 22-inch diameter footprint, a 20-gallon tank and a requirement for access to a GFCI-protected outlet. The company sells indoor and outdoor configurations. Indoor packages include Glow Rings; outdoor versions depend on sunlight, with Lettuce Grow advising at least six hours of full sun for best performance.
Unlike a do-it-yourself hydroponic build, the Farmstand arrives as a packaged system with a pump, timer, pH test kit, nutrients, measuring scoops and live starter seedlings. That ready-to-grow approach is the main reason to consider it over assembling separate components. It also means your costs continue after the initial purchase because plants and nutrients are consumable inputs.

Space, light and electrical requirements
Footprint and access
A 22-inch diameter footprint sounds modest, but the Farmstand is a tall, plant-filled structure. Leave enough clearance to reach every level, remove the tank cover, inspect roots and refill water. A narrow balcony or crowded kitchen may technically fit the base but still be awkward to use. The 20-gallon reservoir also means you should choose a stable, level surface that can support a substantial filled tank.
Outdoor light
For an outdoor setup, Lettuce Grow says the system performs best with six or more hours of full sun. A shaded patio, winter exposure or a location blocked by buildings may produce slower or less vigorous growth than the company’s marketing images suggest. Observe the proposed location at different times of day before buying; the relevant question is usable direct light on the plants, not simply whether the space is outdoors.
Indoor light
Indoor Farmstands include Glow Rings, while outdoor versions can be made indoor-compatible by purchasing lights. Indoor placement solves weather and seasonal exposure problems but adds the practical requirements of a nearby outlet, a location that tolerates splashes and enough room to work around the unit. Lettuce Grow does not provide an independent electricity-use measurement, so do not assume a particular monthly power cost.
Outlet and water safety
The product specifications call for access to a GFCI outlet. Use the electrical protection required by the manufacturer and local code, keep plugs and connections away from standing water, and avoid placing the reservoir where a leak could damage flooring or electronics. The supplied pH kit and nutrients make water management part of normal ownership rather than a one-time setup task.
How setup works
The exact assembly sequence can vary by version, so use the current instructions supplied with your unit. The following workflow shows the decisions a buyer should plan for without assuming an unlisted pump schedule or nutrient dose.

- Choose the final location first. Confirm the 22-inch diameter footprint, access around the tower, a level surface, the required GFCI outlet and either six or more hours of outdoor sun or an indoor Glow Ring arrangement.
- Inventory the package. Identify the tower sections, reservoir, pump, timer, pH test kit, nutrients, scoops and live seedlings. If a listed component is missing or damaged, contact the seller before filling the tank.
- Assemble the levels. Build the number of sections corresponding to your selected 18-, 24- or 36-plant capacity. Each level accommodates six plants, so the final height and access change with capacity.
- Install circulation hardware. Fit the pump and timer as directed, route the power safely and verify that the tubing and connections are seated before adding plants.
- Fill the reservoir and condition the water. The Original specification identifies a 20-gallon tank. Add nutrients using the supplied instructions and use the pH test kit rather than guessing; Lettuce Grow’s published instructions do not establish a universal dilution or target value that applies to every water source.
- Insert the starter seedlings. The supplied plants are pre-sprouted, which is the basis for Lettuce Grow’s advertised three-week harvest claim. Place each seedling in its planting opening and check that roots and collars are positioned as instructed.
- Set the timer and lights. Use the manufacturer’s current timing guidance for the pump and Glow Rings. Do not copy a schedule from another hydroponic system because pump and light requirements are model-specific.
- Run an observation check. Look for leaks, pump circulation, healthy-looking seedlings and safe cable routing. Record your starting date so you can judge the company’s three-week claim against your own crop and conditions.
What can you grow, and how fast?
Lettuce Grow supplies live starter seedlings, but its current pages do not provide a fixed, permanent crop list. The available selection can change, so check the current seedling catalog when deciding whether the Farmstand can supply the vegetables, herbs or salad ingredients your household actually eats.
Lettuce Grow advertises harvest in about three weeks because the seedlings arrive pre-sprouted. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent statistic or a guarantee for every variety, climate, light level or household. A three-week interval may describe the first harvest of suitable plants rather than a full replacement of all 18, 24 or 36 positions at once. Plan for staggered growth and for some plants to perform differently.
The system’s capacity is best understood as planting positions, not a guaranteed quantity of edible food. A 36-plant tower gives you more places to grow than an 18-plant tower, but the useful output depends on the varieties selected, how often you harvest, light, temperature, water management and plant health. No independent yield trial is published, so there is no defensible pounds-per-month or grocery-equivalent figure to use in a payback calculation.

Seedlings
The Outdoor Farmstand listing displayed seedlings at $2.99 each. Replacing all positions at that price would be $53.82 for 18 plants, $71.76 for 24 and $107.64 for 36, before taxes, shipping or any changes in the displayed price. Those figures are simple multiplication of the listed per-seedling price, not a promise that every crop or order will be priced identically.
Whether you buy new seedlings continuously or propagate some plants yourself changes the economics substantially. Lettuce Grow confirms the live-seedling offering but does not establish how long each plant remains productive, how often a household must replace it or whether every variety is available year-round.
Nutrients, water and accessories
Nutrients and scoops are included in the listed equipment, but they are consumable. Lettuce Grow does not provide an annual nutrient cost, water consumption figure or electricity measurement. Optional items such as a dolly and cleaning kit add convenience at an additional price. Include those purchases only if you genuinely need them for your location and maintenance routine.

Maintenance time
Owners should expect recurring checks of water level, pH, nutrient concentration, pump operation, plant condition and cleanliness. The supplied pH kit signals that testing is part of the intended routine. However, no independent assessment establishes how many minutes per week maintenance takes. A buyer who wants an entirely hands-off appliance should treat that uncertainty as a drawback rather than assume the system is maintenance-free.

Is the Farmstand cheaper than buying produce?
Lettuce Grow does not publish a household-specific payback calculation. You cannot responsibly conclude that the Farmstand saves money, because the answer depends on the purchase price you pay, seedling replacement rate, nutrient and electricity costs, useful harvest, crop prices in your area and how much food you would otherwise buy.
Use this worksheet before ordering:
- Write down the exact configuration price, shipping and taxes shown at checkout.
- Add any indoor Glow Rings, dolly or cleaning kit you need.
- Estimate your first year of seedlings by multiplying the number of positions you expect to replace by the current per-seedling price and the number of replacement cycles you realistically expect.
- Add a household estimate for nutrients, water and electricity. Lettuce Grow’s manufacturer pages do not supply these totals, so label your assumptions clearly.
- Estimate edible harvest conservatively using only quantities you would actually eat. Do not count every planted position as a full grocery replacement.
- Compare that total with your current spending on the same produce, while recognizing that the Farmstand also provides convenience, visibility and a gardening experience that grocery prices do not measure.
If the calculation works only when every plant grows perfectly and is harvested on the advertised schedule, it is too optimistic. If you value the activity and freshness independently of savings, evaluate it as a lifestyle purchase instead of forcing a payback claim.

The practical value of that offer depends on eligibility, return shipping, condition requirements and the date the trial clock begins, so read the current terms before purchase and keep packaging until you know the system works in your location.

The company’s support page, published June 23, 2025, describes a three-year Farmstand warranty under stated conditions: review the current warranty policy for exclusions, covered components and claim steps. A three-year term does not mean every failure, consumable or cosmetic issue is automatically covered.

Buying by capacity alone
A 36-plant tower costs more and needs more usable space, but capacity has value only if you will plant and harvest it. Start with the smallest configuration that meets your actual consumption unless you have a clear plan for the additional positions.

Confirm a GFCI outlet before delivery. Extension-cord improvisation or an outlet too far from the tower can turn a convenient setup into a safety and placement problem.
Underestimating recurring inputs
Price the seedlings you will actually replace, not only the first shipment. Add nutrients and optional accessories to your own budget even though a complete annual cost is not published.
