Lightroom mobile’s Generative Remove uses Adobe Firefly to fill a selected area with generated content intended to blend with the surrounding image. It is designed for larger distractions and complex backgrounds; it requires an internet connection and is currently a premium feature. Adobe says edits are non-destructive, work on raw and non-raw photos, and do not consume generative credits.
What is Lightroom’s Generative Remove?
Generative Remove is an option in Lightroom’s Remove tool. Adobe says Lightroom analyzes the selected area and generates fill content intended to blend with the rest of the image. Adobe’s current documentation does not specify the precise Firefly model version or the low-level processing architecture, so it is best not to assume where every part of the process runs.
Adobe recommends Generative Remove for larger objects and distractions, particularly against complex backgrounds. The generated fill is not a guarantee of an exact reconstruction: inspect the repair and nearby details before accepting it.
Adobe describes edits as non-destructive and says Generative Remove works with raw and non-raw photos.

How to use Generative Remove on Lightroom mobile
- Open a photograph in Detail view and choose Remove.
- Make sure Generative AI is enabled. Choose the image-quality setting: reduced resolution is the faster, smaller-file option; higher resolution is the better-output option.
- Set the brush size and brush over the unwanted object. Adobe advises covering roughly the entire object to help Detect objects select it completely.
- Use Refine if the selection needs adjustment.
- Review the generated fill. Open Variations to compare three options, or tap Refresh to seek a different fill.
- Adjust Opacity if needed, and use Restore to undo the adjustment.
- Inspect the repaired area, including edges and nearby texture, then tap Done to save the edit.
Adobe’s mobile instructions state that Generative Remove requires an internet connection and is a premium feature. A stable connection is required, and connection speed can affect performance. Access eligibility can depend on the account and plan, so check the app for your account’s current status.

Which Lightroom removal tool should you choose?

What Generative Remove is good at
It is useful when a larger distraction sits against a background that would be difficult to repair by copying nearby pixels. Examples include a person or object disrupting a scene, or clutter against a varied background. The three variations, Refresh, and Restore let you compare or revise the edit rather than simply keeping the first result.
Generative Remove creates replacement content, so inspect the whole repaired area and surrounding texture. Adobe does not promise that every result will be seamless or reproduce the original scene exactly.

Access, credits, and limitations
Do not confuse premium access with generative-credit consumption. Adobe’s currently accessed generative-credit FAQ lists Lightroom Generative Remove as a feature that does not consume generative credits. Plan eligibility may vary, so confirm current access in your account.
Adobe says the feature needs an internet connection. The documentation does not establish that every processing step happens exclusively on the device or exclusively in the cloud. Its non-destructive workflow means you can review or restore the edit rather than treating it as an irreversible change to the original.

If you see a prompt to update AI edits after changing devices or platforms, Adobe says the update process requires internet access, enough local storage to download the updated image, and an eligible account. Adobe also warns that some AI edits made on other platforms may not be supported on Android and may be removed.

How to get better results
- Cover the whole object. Adobe advises roughly covering it to help object detection select it completely.
- Compare the variations. Review the three options and use Refresh if none is suitable.
- Inspect edges and nearby texture before saving, especially around detailed or irregular backgrounds.
- Use Heal for small blemishes or dust when texture sampling and blending suit the job.
- Use Clone when predictable copied pixels are preferable to generated fill.
- Use Restore if the generated repair is not acceptable.
