Google Photos is the better choice for a quick, occasional cleanup; Lightroom is the better choice when the object is large, the background is difficult, or the edit must remain part of a RAW-based workflow. There is no standardized 2026 benchmark proving that either service creates the best pixels on every image. The practical difference is control: Google Photos minimizes decisions, while Lightroom offers refinement, alternative results, and manual Heal or Clone tools when generative removal misses.

For a client-critical image, neither app is infallible. If a generated fill invents architecture, text, limbs, or reflections, switch to manual retouching or Photoshop.

Adobe’s Generative Remove is powered by Adobe Firefly and is available across Lightroom mobile, desktop, web, and Classic ecosystems, subject to edition and subscription requirements. Google Photos Magic Eraser
Google Photos provides Magic Eraser and related erase actions in its editor. On the current Android help page, you can select an area by tapping, circling, or brushing, then use Erase, Move, Deselect, and Add/Subtract refinement controls. Magic Eraser appears through the editor’s Actions area. Google’s broader Magic Editor features are separate; do not treat every Magic Editor function as Magic Eraser. Google Photos help
Google originally described Magic Eraser as detecting distractions such as people, power lines, and power poles while also accepting manual circling or brushing. Availability rules announced in 2024 have changed over time, so check the current app, device, account, and region rather than assuming every phone has identical access. How to remove an object in Google Photos
- Open Google Photos and open the image.
- Tap Edit.
- Choose a suggested action or find Magic Eraser in the editor’s Actions area.
- Tap, circle, or brush over the unwanted object.
- Tap Erase.
- Use Add or Subtract to correct the selection. Use Move only when repositioning is appropriate.
- Tap Done, then inspect the full image and a zoomed view. Use Revert if the result is worse.
This is the faster one-off workflow. The trade-off is that fewer exposed controls can make it harder to correct a complicated mask or compare many alternatives. Labels and availability can differ between Android, iPhone, Pixel devices, app versions, accounts, and regions.

How to remove an object in Lightroom
- Open the image in Lightroom.
- Select the Remove tool and enable Generative AI.
- Adjust the brush size and brush over the entire object, extending beyond its edges.
- Include a cast shadow or reflection when it belongs to the object being removed.
- Use add/subtract refinement to correct the mask.
- Click or tap Apply.
- Review the generated variations and choose the most plausible result; Adobe’s current tutorial shows three options.
- Compare the edit with the original. If it fails, undo and try a tighter mask, smaller passes, Heal, or Clone.

Which handles common removal jobs better?
Small object on a plain background
For trash on pavement, a dust mark, or a distant person against sand, both systems may produce an acceptable fill. Google Photos is usually the quickest. In Lightroom, Heal or Clone can be more predictable than generative filling when the texture is simple and repeatable.

Lightroom has the stronger workflow case for a person blocking architecture, a sign covering a wall, a vehicle, or an arm crossing a scene. Its larger mask, refinement controls, and multiple variations make it easier to recover from a weak first result. Google Photos can work on repetitive texture, but inspect perspective lines, text, and edges at 100 percent.

Person against a complex scene
Check limbs, fingers, faces, brick and tile continuity, railings, and any shadow. Recent Lightroom updates describe automatic detection of extra people and improved handling of selected-object shadows or reflections; these are version-dependent capabilities, not permanent guarantees. Wires, poles, and other thin lines
Google Photos may be fastest for an isolated wire against an uncomplicated sky. When a line crosses trees, buildings, or textured detail, Lightroom’s brush refinement and manual Remove, Heal, and Clone choices are more useful. Thin lines often require an oversized brush and several passes in either app.
Shadows and reflections
Removing only a person while leaving the person-shaped shadow is an obvious failure. Select the object and its shadow together when appropriate, then check pavement shadows, water reflections, and glass reflections separately. A replacement should follow the scene’s light and geometry, not merely look smooth.

Objects touching the main subject
Hair, clothing, transparent items, and objects touching a person are high-risk cases. Make a tight selection, work in smaller passes, and verify that the subject’s outline has not been erased or redrawn.

“The object disappeared” is not enough. Inspect both the complete composition and a 100% crop for:
- Completeness: no recognizable fragment remains.
- Edges: no halos, smears, or bleeding into the subject.
- Continuity: perspective lines, bricks, tiles, foliage, waves, and fences continue naturally.
- Plausibility: no impossible architecture, repeated faces, invented text, or extra limbs.
- Texture: matching grain, sharpness, depth of field, color, and lighting.
- Detail preservation: nearby fine detail remains intact.
- Repeatability: a good result is reachable without endless retries.
- Export and workflow: expected resolution, metadata, RAW handling, and edit history are retained.
A phone-sized preview can hide defects that become visible in a print or desktop review. Lightroom’s multiple variations improve the chance of finding a usable result, but “more controls” does not itself prove a better generative model.

Google’s storage plans and AI bundles are not equivalent to Lightroom’s editing software. Do not buy a Google One tier solely for object removal until the required feature is confirmed for your device and account. What to do when both tools fail
- Undo or revert the edit.
- Make the selection tighter and include the relevant shadow or reflection.
- Use several smaller passes instead of one oversized mask.
- Try another generated variation.
- In Lightroom, switch between Generative Remove, Heal, and Clone.
- Assess the whole image, then inspect edges at 100 percent.
- Crop only if the remaining artifact is outside the important composition.
- Use Photoshop or careful manual retouching for client-critical work.

Ethical and editorial limits
Do not remove people or objects from documentary, news, scientific, legal, or evidentiary images without disclosure. Removing safety features, damage, medical details, or context can mislead viewers. Commercial clients may also require disclosure of generative edits. A generated background is not a faithful record of what was photographed.
Bottom-line recommendation
Choose Google Photos when speed, simplicity, and an occasional social or family edit matter most. Choose Lightroom when you need repeatable corrections, multiple generated options, larger or more complicated removals, RAW support, and continuity with color and catalog work. When a clean, defensible result matters more than convenience, plan for Heal, Clone, Photoshop, or manual retouching rather than assuming either AI button is infallible.
