Short answer: LightShed is a research attack, not an established consumer app for removing Glaze or NightShade. It learns characteristics of image perturbations from examples, then detects and neutralizes perturbations associated with several studied protection schemes. Its reported detection figures are results from the authors’ evaluation—not a universal bypass or a legal judgment about using artwork for AI training.
What LightShed is—and what it is not
LightShed is a research system described by Hanna Foerster, Sasha Behrouzi, Phillip Rieger, Murtuza Jadliwala, and Ahmad-Reza Sadeghi. The paper appeared in the proceedings of the 34th USENIX Security Symposium in 2025, pages 7271–7290. USENIX paper page.
LightShed investigates whether perturbations intended to discourage unauthorized AI training can be detected and neutralized once researchers have examples of protected images. It is a research capability, not a mainstream downloadable art utility.
- It is not ordinary watermark removal. Glaze and NightShade add subtle perturbations intended to influence how machine-learning systems interpret images.
- It is not a guarantee of perfect restoration. Neutralizing a studied perturbation does not establish that every original pixel can be recovered.

- It is not legal permission. A technical result does not decide copyright, licensing, consent, or contractual questions.
Why artists use Glaze and NightShade
Artists use these tools in response to concerns that their work may be collected online and used to train image generators without consent. They have different stated aims: the University of Cambridge describes Glaze as hindering the extraction of stylistic features, while NightShade aims to corrupt model learning by associating an artist’s style with unrelated concepts. How LightShed works at a high level
LightShed treats protection perturbations as patterns that can be learned from available examples. The Cambridge summary describes a three-step process:
- Identify: determine whether an image has been altered by a studied protection.
- Learn: model characteristics of the perturbation from protected examples.
- Remove: use those learned characteristics to neutralize the perturbation.
This is why describing LightShed as a simple blur or watermark eraser is misleading. The paper evaluates perturbation schemes including NightShade and Glaze, and also considers Mist and MetaCloak. These are NightShade detection metrics, not overall accuracy or a universal success rate. The research does not establish how LightShed performs on every current version of the named defenses, every image transformation, or defenses created after the evaluation. It also does not establish perfect pixel-level recovery.
Why public protection methods create an arms race
Artists need perturbations subtle enough not to damage visible artwork but strong enough to influence a model. If a protection applies repeatable changes, those changes may also be learnable by an attacker with examples. LightShed illustrates this tension; it does not prove that the arms race is over.
- An artist applies a perturbation intended to discourage unauthorized training.
- Researchers and protection providers publish methods or examples so artists can use and assess them.
- Others may study the examples and learn recurring patterns.
- A detector or purifier may then be trained to recognize and neutralize those patterns.
- Protection researchers may respond with stronger or more adaptive defenses.
LightShed’s availability and its dual-use problem

The technique is dual-use: researchers may use it to assess protections and develop stronger defenses, while others could misuse similar capabilities to prepare protected images for training. The project page attributes to Prof. Ahmad-Reza Sadeghi the statement, “We see this as a chance to co-evolve defenses.” That stated purpose does not eliminate the possibility of misuse.
What LightShed does not prove
- It does not prove every protected image can be restored perfectly. The evaluation concerns studied perturbations and test conditions.
- It does not prove every current or future protection is defeated. The paper evaluates named schemes, not every implementation or later defense.
- It does not prove commercial AI companies use LightShed. The research demonstrates a capability, not production deployment.
- It does not stop scraping or copying. It concerns detection and neutralization of perturbations, not preventing downloads or reposts.
- It does not resolve ownership or consent. Technical results are not a license to use artwork.
Technical defeat is not legal permission
The LightShed paper reports technical findings; it does not determine whether training on any particular artwork is lawful. Copyright, licensing, consent, contracts, and applicable exceptions are separate questions that depend on the relevant facts and jurisdiction.
What artists should do with this information
LightShed is a reason to set realistic expectations, not necessarily to abandon anti-training tools. Treat perturbations as one possible layer rather than an irreversible lock.

Use layered protection instead of one supposed lock
- Keep high-resolution originals, working files, and dated records in a secure archive.
- Publish only the resolution needed for a public preview.
- State licensing and training preferences clearly, while recognizing that a notice is not technical enforcement.
- Consider visible watermarking when attribution matters, but do not confuse it with anti-training protection.
- Use platform controls where available and monitor for unauthorized reposts or impersonation.
The practical takeaway
LightShed demonstrates that perturbations used by studied anti-training protections can be detected and neutralized under the authors’ test conditions. The authors report 99.98% true-positive and 100% true-negative rates for NightShade detection; those figures do not guarantee performance on every image or defense.
Artists can treat Glaze, NightShade, and comparable protections as one layer in a broader approach that includes careful publishing choices, records, licensing information, and monitoring. Technical defenses do not prevent all copying or establish permission.
