Easy steps to building a living green chandelier begin with choosing the right construction: an outdoor bowl filled with fresh gum branches, a moss-and-soil wreath carrying rooted plants, or a repurposed chandelier frame holding separate pots. These designs look similar when suspended, but their materials, watering needs and support requirements are different.

For the safest result, decide where the display will hang, select plants for that light and exposure, and plan how you will lower or reach it for watering before you drill a hole or add soil. None of the published tutorials provides a rated load or structural calculation, so their ceiling-hook and stud instructions are methods to follow carefully, not proof that a particular ceiling can carry your finished display.

Choose the chandelier style before buying materials

Your first decision determines almost everything else: whether the greenery is cut material, rooted plants held in a cage, or potted plants supported by a decorative frame.

Design Planting method Best setting Care pattern What the source does not establish
Bowl, chain and gum branches Fresh branches and gumnuts woven through wire over a shallow bowl Outdoor decorative display Initial 30-minute soak; replace or refresh greenery as needed No ceiling-load rating or quantified maintenance schedule
Caged living wreath Moss and a thin layer of moist soil inside a wire wreath form, with rooted plants Indoors or on a covered porch or deck; exposed sites need suitable outdoor plants Watering and misting, with periodic removal for cleaning No safe working load for the frame, eye bolts, cable or ceiling
Repurposed chandelier frame Individual nursery pots resting on attached saucers Any protected location where the frame can be safely anchored Each pot can be watered or removed separately No electrical or structural certification for a modified fixture

Use the bowl method when you want a quick, seasonal outdoor arrangement without a soil-filled planting structure. Choose the wreath method when you want living plants integrated into one mossy form. Choose the repurposed frame when individual pots are more convenient than a shared soil mass.

Plan the location and suspension first

Match the site to the plants

Florist Ellen Heddleston, co-owner of United States of Flowers, told Apartment Therapy: “Ferns are a really good place to start because their natural environment is low light and mossy, and they’ll last a long time.” She added that succulents can work, but only where the available light is sufficient to sustain them.

For an exposed outdoor location, use plants suited to outdoor conditions. Heddleston’s recommendation for the moss-based arrangement is to hang it in the house or on a covered porch or deck; she cautions that a display left exposed will probably struggle. Houseplants in rain, wind and temperature swings can mold, rot or brown.

Allow access for water and cleaning

Do not choose a location that can only be reached by stretching from a chair. A ladder, a lowering pulley or a way to unhook the arrangement makes routine care safer. The potted-frame tutorial specifically suggests a ladder and watering can or a pulley system. The moss tutorial recommends taking the structure down periodically to wash it.

Verify the support instead of guessing a capacity

The bowl tutorial directs the installer to drill for a hook in a ceiling rafter. The wreath tutorial describes eye bolts and washers attached to a ceiling stud, with S-hooks and steel cable connecting the pieces. These are attachment locations, not load calculations. Wet moss, soil, plants, pots and water can weigh substantially more than the dry materials, and the sources provide no rated capacity.

Build A: outdoor bowl, chain and fresh gum greenery

This is the project published by Better Homes & Gardens Australia on December 1, 2023, under the name “DIY Your Own Living Chandelier.” It is a decorative greenery arrangement, not a powered lighting fixture.

Materials and tools

  • A shallow bowl
  • Rust-effect chain, cut into three equal lengths
  • Black tie wire
  • Fresh gum branches and gumnuts
  • A ceiling hook
  • A drill with a 3 mm metal drill bit
  • Long-nose pliers
  • A crimping tool
  • A 100 mm timber drill bit
  • A tub large enough to soak the greenery

Step-by-step assembly

  1. Set the drop. Decide how far the bowl should hang below the ceiling. Cut three equal chain lengths to that desired drop. Equal lengths keep the bowl level when the load is distributed evenly.
  2. Mark the bowl. Space three attachment points around the rim or upper wall of the shallow bowl. Drill the attachment holes with the 3 mm metal bit, using eye protection and a stable work surface.
  3. Attach the chains. Connect one chain to each hole. Use the long-nose pliers and crimping tool to close and secure the links so none can open during handling.
  4. Make the greenery support. Weave black tie wire back and forth across the bowl. Create a firm lattice with openings large enough to accept branches, while keeping the wire tight enough to stop the contents sliding out.
  5. Add branches and gumnuts. Push the fresh gum branches and gumnuts through the wire so the greenery spills over the bowl’s sides. Distribute the material around the bowl rather than concentrating it on one side.
  6. Install the ceiling hook. Following the source’s method, drill into a confirmed ceiling rafter with the 100 mm timber bit and screw in the hook. The tutorial does not state the hook’s rating or the capacity of any particular ceiling, so treat this as an installation step requiring your own structural verification.
  7. Hang and level the bowl. Loop the three chains through the ceiling hook. Check that the bowl hangs level and that each chain is carrying its share before you add or rearrange greenery.
  8. Soak the greenery. Place the assembled greenery in a tub of water for 30 minutes, as the tutorial directs. Lift it carefully, allow excess water to drain, and check the suspension again before putting it in its final position.

Practical limits of this method

The design uses cut branches rather than a soil medium, so it is not the same project as a living wreath with rooted plants. The published directions do not state how long the gum greenery will remain fresh, how often it must be replaced, or how much weight the ceiling support can bear. Keep the arrangement where dripping water will not damage the surface below, and inspect the wire and chain whenever you handle it.

Build B: a moss-filled caged wreath with live plants

Apartment Therapy’s tutorial, credited to florist Ellen Heddleston, uses a caged living wreath form as the planting structure. The documented example uses two forms, approximately 8 inches and 14 inches across, joined as a suspended display.

Materials

  • Caged living wreath forms, approximately 8 and 14 inches across in the example
  • Live moss
  • Moist soil
  • Plants or flowers
  • A small garden trowel
  • Floral wire
  • Eye bolts and washers
  • S-hooks
  • Steel cable
  • A hammer

The caged wreath form is the key component: it holds the moss and soil while leaving planting pockets around the frame. Search for that specific form by size when sourcing materials; the tutorial itself identifies it as the base product.

Step-by-step planting

  1. Prepare the forms. Place the wreath cages on a protected work surface. Check for sharp wire ends and orient the cages so the planting openings are accessible.
  2. Add moss. Line or fill the cages with live moss. Pack it evenly so there are no large voids through which the soil can fall.
  3. Add a thin layer of moist soil. Use the small trowel to work a thin layer into the moss. The goal is to provide planting medium without filling the frame with an unnecessarily heavy mass.
  4. Insert the plants. Set plants or flowers into the prepared moss-and-soil pockets. Keep the root material contained by the cage and avoid forcing a root ball into a space that is too small.
  5. Balance the arrangement. Distribute plants around the circumference and between the two forms. Heddleston’s method emphasizes balancing the weight; an arrangement that is heavy on one side can twist or pull unevenly on its suspension.
  6. Secure the plants. Use floral wire to hold stems and root areas in place. Twist the wire firmly enough to prevent movement but not so tightly that it cuts into stems.

Step-by-step hanging

  1. Locate a ceiling stud. Mark the confirmed structural point where the eye bolts will be installed.
  2. Fit the eye bolts and washers. Install them into the stud according to the hardware manufacturer’s instructions. The tutorial does not provide a working-load figure.
  3. Connect the suspension. Use S-hooks and steel cable to join the wreath pieces to the eye bolts and to one another as shown in the tutorial.
  4. Test before final placement. Check that the forms remain balanced and that every connection stays closed while the structure is gently moved. Do not interpret this check as a substitute for a rated installation.

Why this design becomes demanding

The wreath can get heavy quickly as moss, soil and plants absorb water. That changing wet weight is why the source stresses balance and secure hanging but does not promise a particular ceiling capacity. Plan a method to lower the wreath for watering and cleaning. Heddleston’s care advice is to water once a week to every 10 days, mist between waterings, and take the structure down about once a month to hose it off. Those intervals are interview guidance, not a universal rule: adjust for the plant species, medium, heat, light and humidity.

Build C: repurpose a chandelier frame for individual pots

MyDomaine’s tutorial turns a thrifted chandelier into a hanging plant holder. The finished object is a planter display, not a functioning light.

Prepare the frame

  1. Remove electrical parts. Take out wiring, electrical components and glass shades. Do not retain or modify live wiring for this decorative project; the source does not establish electrical or structural safety for such modifications.
  2. Clean the frame. Remove dirt, grease and loose finish so the surface is ready for paint or other cosmetic work.
  3. Paint if desired. Apply the chosen finish after cleaning and allow it to cure according to the product directions before attaching plant supports.
  4. Attach saucers. Use construction adhesive to fix saucers to the chandelier’s arms or platforms. Let the adhesive cure fully and inspect each bond before adding a pot.

Add and test the plants

  1. Choose compatible pots. Select pots that fit securely inside the attached saucers without rocking or overhanging the frame.
  2. Hang the empty frame. Install the frame on a strong, verified anchor and check how it hangs before adding any plants. This reveals imbalance while the structure is still light.
  3. Add pots gradually. Place the plants one at a time, distributing weight around the frame. Stop if the frame tilts, a saucer shifts or an adhesive joint moves.
  4. Plan watering access. Use a ladder and watering can or a pulley system, as the tutorial suggests. Watering in place is preferable to repeatedly destabilizing a heavily loaded frame.

Because each plant remains in its own pot, you can remove one for inspection, rotate it toward the light or replace it without disturbing the others. That convenience is the main care advantage over a shared moss-and-soil wreath.

Choose plants by light, exposure and container

Low-light interiors and covered areas

Ferns are Heddleston’s starting recommendation for a low-light, mossy environment. They suit the visual language of a moss-filled wreath, provided the location still supplies enough usable light for the particular fern. Check the plant’s care label rather than treating “low light” as “no light.”

Bright locations

Succulents can be suitable where light is strong enough to sustain them. In a shaded room, a succulent arrangement may decline even if the frame remains damp. Select plants based on the actual light at the hanging height, not on the brightness of the floor or a nearby window.

Fully exposed outdoor sites

Use plants sold for the local outdoor conditions when the chandelier will be exposed to rain, wind and direct sun. The advice to use a covered porch or deck applies particularly to the moss-based design; an exposed site can cause unsuitable houseplants to mold, rot or brown.

Watering, misting and cleaning without damaging the display

For a moss-and-soil wreath

Use Heddleston’s once-a-week-to-every-10-days interval only as a starting point. Feel the medium and observe the plants, then adjust for species, temperature, airflow and light. Mist between waterings if the plants benefit from higher humidity, but do not assume misting replaces thorough watering when the soil is dry.

About once a month, her recommendation is to take the structure down and hose it off. Lower it using the planned pulley or unhooking method, support the weight while cleaning, and let excess water drain before rehanging.

For potted plants

Water each pot according to its own plant and container rather than treating the chandelier as one bed. Check that saucers and adhesive joints remain sound after watering. If a pot needs soaking, remove it and return it only after it has drained enough not to spill onto the frame or floor.

For the bowl arrangement

The Australian tutorial calls for soaking the greenery in a tub for 30 minutes during assembly. It does not give a recurring watering schedule or a replacement interval for the cut gum branches. Keep the bowl and wire clear of standing water that could damage the finish, and handle the arrangement carefully when it is wet.

Troubleshoot before a small problem becomes a fall

Symptom Checks and corrective action
The display tilts or twists Stop adding plants. Rebalance the greenery, moss or pots, then inspect chain lengths, cable connections and anchor points.
The structure feels heavier after watering Lower it safely before further watering. Wet moss and soil add changing weight; reassess the support rather than assuming the original dry setup is adequate.
Plants decline in spite of watering Check light first, then review moisture and exposure. A succulent in insufficient light or a houseplant left in harsh outdoor conditions may fail for reasons watering cannot solve.
Moss or foliage develops mold or brown patches Inspect ventilation, exposure and watering frequency. Move a houseplant display to an indoor or covered site if it is exposed to weather, and remove visibly failing material.
A pot shifts on a saucer Remove the pot, check the saucer bond and confirm that the pot fits without rocking. Do not continue hanging a loose pot over people or furniture.
A hook, eye bolt or cable moves Unload the display and stop using the anchor until its attachment and suitability are verified. The tutorials provide no load rating that can justify continuing with a moving connection.

Final installation checklist

  • You selected one construction method instead of combining incompatible instructions from the three designs.
  • Every plant matches the light, temperature and exposure at the final location.
  • The finished wet arrangement has been considered, even though the published tutorials do not provide a numerical load rating.
  • The hook or eye bolts are anchored in a confirmed rafter or stud, with hardware appropriate to that structure.
  • Chains, S-hooks, cable, wire and adhesive joints are closed, secure and accessible for inspection.
  • You can water, mist, clean and eventually remove the display without standing on an unstable chair.
  • The display is decorative only unless it has separately certified electrical components; the repurposed-frame method removes the wiring and shades.
