A log cabin table runner is a small quilt (or woven textile) built from a central square and strips, called “logs,” added in rounds. Arrange light strips on one side and dark strips on the other for the classic diagonal split. For a proven quilted format, the American Patchwork & Quilting pattern finishes at 25-1/4 × 49-1/4 inches from twelve 6-inch finished blocks. You can also foundation-piece a very long, narrow runner or weave one on a rigid-heddle loom.
What makes a log cabin runner?
Each block starts with a center square. Strips are sewn around it in numbered rounds, then the blocks are joined into a runner. The Metropolitan Museum of Art defines the traditional block as “square units or blocks, each with one diagonal half of dark strips and the other of light strips.” A Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, example from about 1875 used wool and cotton.
The light-versus-dark division is a design convention, not a rule. Prints, solids, a rainbow progression, or two contrasting palettes all work if the two sides remain visually distinct.

There is no universal table-runner size. Measure the furniture and decide how much overhang you want at each end; keep the finished width clear of place settings, serving dishes, or a cooktop. Published examples show how widely proportions can vary:

Strip-pieced quilt: the familiar workflow
Strip piecing is the most approachable option if you sew patchwork. The American Patchwork & Quilting project uses floral centers, adds numbered strips around them, and presses each seam away from the center. After blocks are assembled, the runner is layered with backing and batting, quilted, and finished with binding.

Foundation piecing: precise, stable geometry
Jinny Beyer’s Burano runner uses foundation-pieced full and half log-cabin blocks. Sewing onto a paper or fabric foundation stabilizes the strips and avoids stretchy bias edges; the design uses straight seams and a traditional bound edge. This method is useful when exact points and a very long, narrow proportion matter.

Woven construction: a different material and setup
The Lion Brand kit uses black and ivory Perle 5/2 cotton. Its downloadable pattern creates a plain-weave, alternating warp-and-weft color effect. It is suitable only if you have (or plan to obtain) a rigid-heddle loom, two shuttles, and a 12-dent reed; those items are not included in the kit.

Materials and tools for a quilted runner
- Quilting cotton for the center and light/dark logs. Follow the chosen pattern’s strip widths and quantity rather than estimating from the finished area.
- Backing fabric, batting, and binding. The American Patchwork & Quilting runner specifies 1-5/8 yards of backing and a 32 × 56-inch batting piece, in addition to its assorted cotton prints and binding fabric.
- Rotary cutter, mat, ruler, sewing machine, thread, iron, and a walking foot for straight-line quilting.
- A log-cabin trim tool or die if you want repeatable trimming. Published projects name the Creative Grids Log Cabin Trim Tool and the AccuQuilt GO! Log Cabin die.
Buy extra fabric when directional prints, fussy-cut centers, or pattern matching will create waste. Keep the pattern’s cutting instructions with the fabric bundle so every strip remains identified by round.
How to strip-piece the blocks
- Plan the palette. Separate fabrics into a light group and a dark group, and choose a center square that contrasts with both.
- Cut accurately. Cut the center and each numbered log to the dimensions in your pattern. Sub-cutting from strips with the grain reduces distortion.
- Sew the first round. Stitch the first log to one side of the center with a consistent seam allowance. Press the seam away from the center, then add the next log in the pattern’s sequence.
- Complete each block. Continue alternating sides and pressing after every seam. Trim only where the instructions direct; over-trimming can make later rounds too small.
- Arrange before joining. Lay blocks on a design wall or floor and rotate them to control the larger light/dark pattern. Photograph the layout before stacking blocks.
- Assemble the top. Sew blocks into rows, then join rows. Press row seams in the direction that nests intersections or press them open if your pattern specifies.
- Quilt and bind. Make a quilt sandwich with backing, batting, and top; quilt through all layers; square the edges; and sew on the binding.
Foundation-piecing workflow
- Print the foundation at the pattern’s stated scale and cut fabric pieces with the required seam allowances.
- Place the center and first strip on the unprinted side of the foundation, then sew directly on the marked line.
- Press the strip open, trim its seam allowance, and add each subsequent log in numerical order.
- Make the half blocks as separate units when the design calls for them; their placement controls the runner’s long, narrow outline.
- Remove paper carefully (if paper is used), join the units, and finish with the specified binding.
Foundation piecing improves edge stability, but it adds paper handling and more trimming. Test a small unit first to confirm printer scale and seam allowance.

Using a ruler or die
A specialty tool is optional, not a requirement. A trim tool helps you square repeated rounds to the same size; a die cutter speeds up large batches of uniform pieces. The AccuQuilt example specifies a GO! Log Cabin 12-inch Finished Square die and a 2-1/2-inch strip cutter, with eight 65-centimeter rainbow-print strips, 1 meter of backing, and 40 centimeters of cotton wadding. Those quantities belong to that project and should not be generalized to every runner.
If you work without a specialty tool, a reliable rotary ruler, accurate seam allowance, and pressing after each seam are sufficient. Check the first block before cutting the remaining fabric.

- COUNTRY PLAID: Classic tartan plaid patterns get a rustic country makeover with muted shades of burgundy red, navy blue and warm tan.
Color and layout decisions
- Classic split: reserve one side for lights and the opposite side for darks to make the diagonal “hearth” read clearly.
- Scrappy: vary prints within each value group while keeping light and dark values separate.
- Controlled movement: use a repeated color order or rainbow sequence so block rotations create a planned secondary pattern.
- Low contrast: similar-value fabrics produce a softer texture but can hide the log structure; photograph fabrics in grayscale to check value.
Common problems and fixes
- Wavy or oversized blocks: verify the seam allowance, press without stretching, and trim each round to the pattern’s measurement.
- Logs no longer meet at corners: recheck strip orientation and the numbered sewing order; unpick the last incorrect seam rather than forcing the intersection.
- Bias edges stretching: handle strips minimally and consider foundation piecing, which is specifically intended to avoid stretchy bias edges.
- Runner feels too wide: remove a block column or choose a pattern with narrower finished blocks; do not simply trim through the log rounds.
- Woven project lacks equipment: the Lion Brand kit does not include the loom, shuttles, or reed, so obtain and set up those items before purchasing yarn-only supplies.
