Look Back makes the act of drawing part of its story and part of its visual language. Kiyotaka Oshiyama’s 2024 animated adaptation follows Fujino and Kyomoto, two young manga artists whose rivalry grows into a creative bond—and whose shared work gives the film’s grief its particular force. The images are not just about making art: the production team deliberately preserved animators’ original drawing lines in the finished film, letting the hand behind the image remain visible.

Two artists, joined by the work they make

Adapted from Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga, first published on Shonen Jump+ in 2021, Look Back begins with Fujino drawing four-panel comics for her elementary-school newspaper. Her confidence falters when she sees the work of Kyomoto, a classmate who stays home and draws with extraordinary skill. At graduation, Fujino meets Kyomoto in person and discovers that Kyomoto has admired her comics for years.

That meeting changes the story’s center of gravity. This is not simply a contest between a talented artist and a rival. Fujino and Kyomoto begin to make manga together, and the creative partnership gives each girl a way to see herself through another person’s attention. The film’s later devastation matters because it breaks into a life built around that shared practice. Loss is inseparable from the work they made and the respect they learned to give one another.

The source manga was ranked No. 1 in the men’s category of Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2022, according to the official film site. The adaptation preserves the premise’s focus on making comics while finding ways animation can express the passage of time, movement, and absence.

How the film lets the artist’s hand show

Animator Kazuto Matsumura told Avex: “We used a unique technique to preserve the lines from the animators’ original drawings directly in the final film.” That choice makes the image feel less like a polished surface that conceals its making and more like a record of decisions: a line placed, shaped, and carried forward by a person. The marks are part of the finished picture, but they also point back to the labor that produced it.

The approach resonates with the subject. Fujino and Kyomoto draw manga; the film itself is made from drawings. When the animators’ lines remain legible, the medium echoes the girls’ creative work without pretending that a film and a comic are the same thing. The connection is especially meaningful in a story where drawing is not an abstract symbol of talent. It is a daily practice through which the protagonists meet, collaborate, and change.

Oshiyama’s adaptation also reflects a concentrated creative vision. He directed the film, wrote the screenplay, and designed the characters, while STUDIO DURIAN produced it. The film’s authored through-line is therefore substantial, but it is the work of a team: the preserved lines, performances, music, sound, editing, and production all contribute to what reaches the screen.

Why the heartbreak grows out of the art

The film’s emotional force comes from the way the girls’ relationship is built through making things together before it is tested by loss. Their bond is not explained only in declarations; it takes shape in the fact of shared work. The devastating turn consequently changes more than the characters’ circumstances. It alters the meaning of the activity that first brought them close.

  • Adolf Hitler wakes up in the 21st century. He quickly gains media attention, but while Germany finds him hilarious and charming. Hitler makes some serious observations about society...

Animation gives that change a distinctive register. A comic page can hold a moment in a still image; a film can carry the viewer through the time between moments with movement, sound, and performance. Look Back uses the contrast between drawing’s apparent stillness and cinema’s unfolding motion to make creative memory feel active: the past remains present, but it cannot simply be restored. The preserved hand-drawn lines sharpen that tension. They are traces of making, not a guarantee that what has been lost can be brought back.

Yuumi Kawai voices Fujino and Mizuki Yoshida voices Kyomoto. Haruka nakamura composed the music; the song “Light song” is performed by haruka nakamura with vocals by urara. Those credits matter in a film whose emotional texture depends not only on what is shown, but on how voices, music, and pauses shape the space around the images.

What the adaptation changes—and what it carries across

A useful way to compare the film with Fujimoto’s manga is to look at what each medium can make immediate. The manga presents drawing as marks on a page; animation turns those marks into images that move through time. The film’s retained animator lines make the conversion visible rather than disguising it as a seamless illusion.

The relationship between rivalry and admiration also gains a different rhythm on screen. Fujino’s reaction to Kyomoto’s ability begins as a crisis of confidence, but their meeting reveals that admiration runs in both directions. Their collaboration then gives the story a shared creative life, rather than leaving the girls defined by comparison alone. The film has 58 minutes according to the Japan Film Database; GKIDS lists a 57-minute runtime for its North American Collector’s Edition. Runtime figures vary by listing, so they are best understood as edition-specific metadata rather than a claim that every version runs identically.

Music, voice performance, and editing are further tools the film can use that a printed page cannot. They shape pace and emotional emphasis alongside the drawings. These are not replacements for the manga’s visual storytelling; they are the film’s means of translating a story about drawn work into another form.
