“Dip into a Lucite freestanding bath from CIBO Design” refers to a 15 July 2009 Architecture & Design announcement, not a current review or independent test. The announcement introduced three models—Pietro, Cruz and Pompeo—and described them as freestanding baths made from 4 mm sanitary-grade acrylic Lucite. It also reported fibreglass reinforcement, shadow-line construction, a steel frame with adjustable levelling legs, a centred 40 mm waste and a five-year warranty.
Those details are historical claims from the 2009 announcement. They should not be treated as current specifications, stock information or warranty terms for a bath you can buy today. The 15 July 2009 announcement does not establish that CIBO’s three named models are still manufactured or sold.

What the title refers to
The title comes from Architecture & Design’s report on CIBO Design’s launch of a Lucite freestanding-bath range. Its context was a contemporary bathroom-furniture collection: the baths were presented as complementary pieces rather than as a laboratory-tested product line or a long-term ownership review.
The source is dated 15 July 2009 and is attributed to the Architecture & Design Team. It contains no independently published performance statistics and no quotation from a named designer, engineer or company spokesperson. Every specification below should therefore be read as a statement made in that announcement, not as a result reproduced from an independent test.

What the 4 mm material statement does—and does not—tell you
“4 mm sanitary-grade acrylic Lucite” is a material and thickness description for the baths in that announcement. It is not a general thickness standard for every Lucite bath, nor does it establish how thick the finished wall is after reinforcement, shaping and any backing layers. When comparing a current product, ask the manufacturer to identify the actual acrylic thickness, the reinforcement method and which parts of the bath use each layer.

The announcement’s scratch-, heat- and mould-resistance language is a manufacturer claim. It does not specify a test method, temperature limit, cleaning chemical, impact condition or exposure period. Treat it as a design claim rather than as a promise that a surface cannot be damaged. A current supplier should provide its own care instructions and any tested limitations.
Fibreglass and shadow-line construction
The source says the baths are reinforced with fibreglass and use shadow-line construction for added strength. It does not publish a cross-section, reinforcement thickness, load rating or explanation of how the shadow line is formed. Those omissions matter because a freestanding bath must remain stable while filled and while a bather enters or exits. For a current purchase, request the technical drawing and the manufacturer’s installation method instead of assuming that a historical construction description applies unchanged.

Steel frame and levelling legs
A steel frame with adjustable levelling legs was part of the reported design. Levelling hardware can be important on a finished floor, but the announcement does not state the adjustment range, steel grade, corrosion protection, fixing points or maximum supported load. Confirm whether the frame is supplied, whether it must be anchored, and whether the legs remain accessible after the bath’s final panels or trim are fitted.
Centred 40 mm waste
The announcement specifies a centred 40 mm waste. That is a useful plumbing datum, but it is not a complete waste-and-overflow specification. It does not say whether a waste fitting, trap, overflow cover or flexible connection was included, nor does it define the required floor outlet position. A replacement or current model may use another size or arrangement. Match the exact technical drawing to the existing or planned pipework before the floor is closed.
Five-year warranty
The five-year term belongs to the 2009 announcement. It does not prove that the warranty was transferable, that labour and removal were covered, or that the same term would apply in every country. Warranty duration, exclusions and the party responsible for claims must be confirmed in current written documentation.

Is this still a current product category?
Yes. A current official manufacturer listing for the Quadro 1700 describes a freestanding bath made using Lucite sanitary-grade acrylic. That listing demonstrates that Lucite acrylic freestanding baths remain available as a category; it does not demonstrate that CIBO Design still offers Pietro, Cruz or Pompeo, or that their 2009 specifications remain in production.

Availability is particularly important with a discontinued or historical model. A bath can remain visible in an old article while its mould, trim, waste kit or replacement parts are no longer supported. Before paying a deposit, obtain a current model number, written stock confirmation, delivery date, dimensions, installation drawing and warranty document for the exact unit being supplied.
How to assess a Lucite freestanding bath today
Use the historical announcement as a description of one 2009 range, then evaluate any current bath against practical information that the article does not provide.
1. Confirm the exact identity
Ask for the manufacturer’s current product code and a dated specification sheet. “Lucite bath” can describe a material category rather than a single design. The code should identify the shell, frame, waste and overflow components, finish and country-specific version.
2. Check dimensions against the room
Measure the finished floor area, door route and any stair or lift access. Request the bath’s overall length, width and height, rim profile, internal bathing dimensions and empty weight. Allow space to clean behind the bath and to reach service connections. The CIBO announcement names no dimensions, so none should be inferred for Pietro, Cruz or Pompeo.

3. Map waste and overflow positions
Compare the manufacturer’s drawing with the planned floor outlet and trap. Confirm whether the waste is centred, offset or supplied as a separate kit, and whether an overflow is built into the shell. Do not rely on the historical 40 mm figure for a new product without checking its current drawing.
4. Verify the support system
Determine whether the bath rests on an integral steel frame, concealed feet, a plinth or another system. Ask for the adjustment range of the legs, fixing requirements and the supported load stated by the manufacturer. A level-looking rim is not enough if the frame is not secured as specified.
5. Establish what arrives in the crate
Get a written list of included and excluded parts: frame, levelling feet, waste, trap, overflow trim, tap fittings, access panels, brackets and installation instructions. A product photograph often shows accessories that are optional or sold separately.
6. Read the current care and warranty documents
Check approved cleaners, temperature warnings, repair procedures, exclusions for incorrect installation and the process for reporting transit damage. Record whether the warranty covers only the shell or also the frame, waste and labour. Keep the invoice, delivery inspection record and installation sign-off.

Ask how the bath is packaged, whether delivery is kerbside or room-of-choice, how many people are required to move it and what happens if access fails. Verify that the quoted lead time applies to your finish and that replacement parts remain obtainable in your market.

A sensible installation sequence
The exact method must follow the current manufacturer’s instructions and local plumbing rules. The sequence below is a planning framework, not a substitute for the supplied drawing.
- Inspect on delivery. Check the shell, frame, feet and fittings for cracks, distortion or missing parts before signing an unqualified delivery receipt.
- Prepare the finished floor. Confirm that the floor is level, suitably supported and protected from water. Locate the waste and supply routes from the current template.
- Dry-position the frame and bath. Set the frame in its final orientation and verify clearances, door swing, tap position and access for servicing.
- Connect the waste and overflow. Assemble the specified fittings without burying joints that the instructions require to remain accessible. Check that the trap and pipework do not foul the frame.
- Level the support. Use the supplied adjustment points to bring the rim level, then apply any required fixings or locking hardware. Do not substitute improvised packers for the approved support method.
- Make the plumbing connections. Complete hot, cold and waste connections with isolation points where required by the installation design.
- Test before final sealing. Fill and drain the bath, inspect every joint, and check that the shell remains stable. Repeat the test after the bath has reached its final position.
- Finish and document. Apply only the sealant and finishing details specified by the manufacturer, photograph concealed connections and retain the installation record for warranty purposes.
Cleaning and everyday care
The 2009 announcement says the range was easy to clean and resistant to scratches, heat and mould. Those statements do not remove the need for routine care. Use the current maker’s approved cleaner and a soft, non-abrasive cloth; avoid assuming that a product safe for ceramic, metal or glass is safe for acrylic. Rinse away residue, dry standing water around the rim and fittings, and deal promptly with leaks so moisture does not remain beneath the bath.
Do not test resistance claims with abrasive pads, scouring powders, solvents or very hot objects. If a mark appears, follow the manufacturer’s repair guidance rather than polishing an unknown surface. When this type of bath makes sense
A Lucite acrylic freestanding bath can suit a bathroom designed around a visible sculptural tub, provided the room has a suitable floor, workable drainage route and enough access for installation and maintenance. The steel-frame and levelling-leg arrangement described in the historical announcement may help a fitting team achieve a stable installation, but its present-day suitability depends on the exact model’s engineering and instructions.
Use extra caution when a seller presents a Pietro, Cruz or Pompeo as new old stock without a traceable specification sheet. Ask how the bath was stored, whether seals and waste fittings are original, who will honour the warranty and whether replacement components can still be sourced. A low price does not compensate for an unsupported shell or an incompatible waste position.
Questions to put to a supplier
- What is the current model number and manufacturing date?
- What are the external and internal dimensions, empty weight and stated filled-load limit?
- What acrylic thickness and reinforcement are used on this exact model?
- Is the frame supplied, and what are the levelling range and fixing points?
- Where are the waste and overflow located, and which fittings are included?
- What floor preparation, access clearance and service access does the installation drawing require?
- Which cleaners and water temperatures are approved?
- What does the current warranty cover, for how long, and in which country is it valid?
- Is the item in stock, what is the delivery method, and how are transit claims handled?
Bottom line
The CIBO Design announcement describes Pietro, Cruz and Pompeo as 2009 Lucite freestanding baths made from 4 mm sanitary-grade acrylic, with fibreglass reinforcement, shadow-line construction, a steel levelling frame, a centred 40 mm waste and a five-year warranty. Those are historical product-announcement details, not current guarantees.
