From above, Lyngvig Lighthouse appears as a landmark set into the shifting dune strip between Denmark’s North Sea coast and Ringkøbing Fjord. The aerial view makes that geography especially clear: the tower is not simply beside the sea, but stands on Holmsland Klit, the narrow land between open water and fjord. The title identifies the scene as drone-captured, but does not identify who made the photograph or when.
What the aerial view reveals
Lyngvig Fyr stands at Holmsland Klit near Hvide Sande on Denmark’s west coast. From ground level, the tower draws the eye upward; from the air, its setting becomes the subject. Dunes and coastal terrain stretch around it, with the North Sea to one side and Ringkøbing Fjord on the other. The perspective shows why the lighthouse matters as both a navigation landmark and a feature of the west-coast landscape.

The lighthouse is a fixed point in a landscape shaped by sand, wind and water. Its isolated position is part of the image’s appeal: rather than rising over a dense town, the tower stands amid open dunes. A tower-top view offers a visitor’s panorama, while an aerial image can reveal the lighthouse’s relationship to the surrounding land and waters at once.
Why Lyngvig Lighthouse was built
The story begins with the wreck of the Norwegian steamer SS Avona in 1903. Ringkøbing Fjord Museums says all 24 crew members died. In response, the Norwegian state urged Denmark to build another lighthouse between Blåvandshuk and Bovbjerg, a stretch of coast where better navigation aids were needed. Architect Aage V. Petersen, who worked for the Danish Lighthouse Authority, designed the tower, the keeper’s residence and a small plant for producing acetylene gas. How tall is Lyngvig Lighthouse?
The tower itself is 38 metres tall. Published figures for the height of its light differ: Ringkøbing Fjord Museums gives 53 metres above sea level, while Jernkysten reports a flame height of 55 metres. Those descriptions and measurements should be kept attributed to their respective sources rather than treated as identical measures.

How the lighthouse light changed
The museum describes the lighthouse’s characteristic signal as a rotating white flash every five seconds. Its original lens rotated by clockwork powered by a descending weight, which a keeper had to wind by hand every four hours. Jernkysten’s chronology adds that the light changed from gas to petroleum in 1920, connected to the public electricity grid in 1955 and was automated in 1965. A fixed LED light was installed in 2011; the sweeping light returned in 2013, according to the regional heritage source.
Can visitors climb Lyngvig Lighthouse?
Yes. Visitors can climb 228 steps to see the coast, Ringkøbing Fjord and the surrounding dunes from above. This is a different perspective from an aerial photograph: the tower-top view lets visitors look across the landscape while remaining inside the lighthouse. The tower has no wheelchair access. Visiting information for 2026
Ringkøbing Fjord Museums lists seasonal opening hours and an adult admission price of DKK 85 for 2026. Children aged 0–17 enter free when accompanied by an adult, and the keeper’s house is free to enter. For September 1 through October 31, the listed daily hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The operator warns that hours may change without notice, so check its current page before setting out. The address is Holmsland Klitvej 109, 6960 Hvide Sande. The museum lists two free parking lots and estimates that a visit takes one to two hours. Dogs on a leash are welcome in the surrounding area but not inside the tower. The café follows the lighthouse’s opening hours, and visitors may bring their own food. VisitDenmark also lists a shop, café, nature playground and nearby dune and beach walks.

What is known about the drone photograph?
The image’s title says it was captured from above by drone, but it does not establish the photographer, capture date, drone model, altitude, camera settings or flight conditions. Those details cannot be inferred from the view alone.
Anyone planning to make a similar photograph should check the latest Danish official drone map and applicable airspace and environmental rules, as well as any site-specific permissions. An official regulation result flags Ringkøbing Fjord F43 as a year-round bird-protection area, but that information alone does not establish the boundary at a particular launch point by the lighthouse or whether a specific flight is permitted. Reopening after repairs
Lyngvig Lighthouse reopened to visitors on 7 June 2025 after being closed for more than eight months. Ringkøbing Fjord Museums says the temporary closure began in September 2024, after an inspection found loose plaster on the upper floors; interior repairs were completed before reopening.
