Make a doughnut-shaped pincushion from felt, polyester fiberfill and hand stitching. The free AllPeopleQuilt project by Lesley Chaisson of Candy Corner Quilting finishes at approximately 4 inches across and 1¼ inches tall, with a felt icing appliqué and optional stitched or beaded sprinkles. Materials for one donut pincushion
- A 6 × 12-inch piece of tan, brown or light-brown felt for the doughnut.
- A 5-inch square of pink, brown, white or tan felt for the icing.
- Polyester fiberfill.
- An embroidery needle.
- No. 5 or No. 8 perle cotton in dark pink, cream, white, caramel and yellow.
- Optional: assorted bugle or seed beads for sprinkles, and a chopstick to help with turning or stuffing.

Print and prepare the pattern
- Open the PDF and print at 100% with page scaling set to none. Do not select “Shrink to Fit” or “Fit to Printable Area.”
- Measure the one-inch reference box on the printed page. If it is not one inch, adjust the print settings and print again before cutting the pattern pieces.
- Cut the pattern pieces from paper, then cut the corresponding doughnut and icing shapes from felt.
Make the felt doughnut ring
Stitch the ring
Pair the two felt doughnut pieces. Stitch the outer curved edges and the inner curved edges together to form a tube. Keep the curved edges aligned so the ring turns evenly.

Turn, stuff and close
- Turn the tube right-side out. A chopstick can help ease the felt through without pulling hard on the seams.
- Fill the ring firmly with polyester fiberfill so it holds its rounded shape.
- Insert one end of the tube into the other, align the felt edges and slip-stitch the overlap closed.
Attach the icing and add sprinkles
Stitch the icing appliqué
Center the felt icing piece on top of the ring. Whipstitch, cross-stitch or blanket-stitch around its outside edge. For the inner edge, whipstitch while gently pushing the appliqué into the doughnut’s curve.
Choose the finishing details
Add sprinkles with short straight stitches in perle cotton, or sew on optional bugle or seed beads. - Use the pattern’s icing color and shape options to vary the look.
- Choose thread stitches for sewn sprinkles, or beads for a beaded finish.
- Pick whipstitch, cross-stitch or blanket stitch for the icing’s outside edge.
