A ladder stitch closes an opening from the outside while keeping most of the connecting thread hidden once the seam is drawn closed. It is especially useful for closing a pillow or stuffed toy after turning or stuffing it: take small alternating bites inside the two folded edges, then pull the thread gently to close the gap.
You need a suitable hand-sewing needle and thread; pins can help keep the folds aligned. The finished stitch may be nearly invisible, but the result depends on the fabric, thread, and how carefully the bites and tension are controlled.
When to use a ladder stitch
Use a ladder stitch when an opening must be closed from the outside, such as the opening left for turning or stuffing a pillow or soft toy. A machine-sewn closure may suit an opening that can be sewn before the project is turned or stuffed; ladder stitch is useful when the opening remains accessible only from the outside.

- A sharp hand-sewing needle that passes through the fabric comfortably. A medium-sized sharps needle is one general recommendation, not a universal size prescription.
- Thread appropriate to the project fabric.
- Pins, if helpful for keeping the edges aligned.
How to sew a ladder stitch
- Prepare the opening. Turn the project right side out if needed, and tuck the raw edges into the opening to create aligned folds. Pins can help hold the folds in place. Pressing the fabric may make the folds easier to see, if suitable for the material.
- Start and secure the thread. Thread the needle and begin a short distance from the opening. Bring it out at the edge, then make a few tiny securing stitches. Trim the starting tail if it is secure.
- Take a small bite on one side. Insert the needle inside the fold and catch a small amount of fabric without bringing it through the outside face.
- Take a matching bite on the other side. Cross the opening and catch a similar amount inside the opposite fold, roughly across from the first bite.
- Continue alternating. Repeat small bites from side to side. Before tightening, the thread bridges the opening like the rungs of a ladder.
- Close the seam gradually. Pull the thread gently every few stitches, just enough to bring the folded edges together. Avoid yanking; redistribute the tension if the fabric puckers.
- Secure and hide the tail. At the end, make a few small securing stitches. Pass the thread into the item and hide the tail inside before trimming it.
How to make the stitch less visible
Keep bites small and inside the folds
Catch only a small amount of each folded edge. If the needle emerges through the outside face, the thread may show.

Align corresponding bites
Take similar bites at roughly matching positions on each side. Pins can help keep the edges from shifting as you sew.
Use gentle, even tension
Draw the thread only until the gap closes, and tighten every few stitches rather than pulling hard over a long section. If the seam puckers, loosen the tension and redistribute it along the sewn section.

Ladder stitch and related terms
Names for nearly invisible hand-sewing finishes overlap. The alternating edge-bite method described here is called a ladder stitch. Some tutorials use terms such as invisible stitch or blind stitch for related finishes, but the sources do not establish that these names always mean the same method. Oregon State University Extension describes slip stitch as an invisible finishing stitch suitable for closing a pillow or stuffed-toy opening.

These methods should not be treated as a performance ranking: the right choice depends on whether the opening must be closed from the outside, whether raw edges need securing, and the project’s construction.
