Yes, a 5×7 laundry room can hold a washer and dryer, but not every desirable feature at full size. The nominal footprint is 60 by 84 inches (35 square feet). In practice, wall finish, trim, the door, appliance projections, and utility connections reduce the usable area. Your first decision is the main compromise: keep the machines side by side, or stack them to release floor and wall space for a sink, counter, or storage. The layouts below show what each choice makes possible and what it gives up.
Start with the real dimensions, not the nominal 5×7 label
A room called 5×7 measures 60×84 inches only before construction details are deducted. Measure the finished inside walls at several points, then account for drywall or other wall finishes, baseboards, casing, radiators, duct chases, and any pipes or electrical boxes that project into the room. A few inches lost along one wall can change whether a cabinet door opens or whether a machine can be serviced.

Appliance dimensions also have more than one number. Record the cabinet depth and width, then add the space occupied by water hoses, a drain hose, a dryer vent, the washer and dryer doors, knobs, and the access needed to remove panels. A pair advertised as a particular width may project farther once connected. Use the installation manual for the exact models before ordering cabinets or counters.
The most useful question is not simply whether two machines fit. It is whether they can be loaded, unloaded, opened, serviced, and used without the door or another fixture blocking the standing area. Draw those movements at full size on graph paper or painter’s tape on the floor.

Choose the arrangement that matches your priority
| Arrangement | What it provides | Main compromise | Best fit for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Side by side with shelves above | A straightforward linear installation and overhead storage | Little room remains for a separate sink or floor-standing cabinet; a fixed folding surface may be absent | People who want separate machines and can fold elsewhere or across front-loaders |
| Side by side with a shallow side counter | A dedicated narrow ledge for folding without taking much floor depth | The work area is narrow, and the usable width depends on machine projection and the aisle | Small loads, towels, and quick sorting in the room |
| Side by side with a compact sink | A place to soak, pretreat, or rinse items near the entry | The sink cabinet replaces counter space and must coexist with the door | Homes that value stain treatment more than a large permanent folding top |
| Stacked pair with a counter and storage | Floor and wall area for a separate work surface, cabinet, or shelves | The dryer is higher, and stacking hardware, reach, and service access are model-specific | People who want a real counter or more closed storage |
| Stacked pair with a sink and tall cabinet | Several functions in one compact plan | A permanent folding counter is sacrificed; a pull-out board becomes more valuable | People who prioritize a sink and concealed storage |
These are planning concepts based on published example plans, not guaranteed clearances or installation instructions. The exact products and finished room control the final result.
Layout 1: side-by-side machines with a shallow folding ledge
The most direct plan places the washer and dryer on the 60-inch back wall. A September 3, 2026 plan from Designing Idea illustrates 27×24-inch machine examples, a 12-inch-deep counter on a side wall, and an open area described as 50 inches wide by 60 inches deep. Those figures describe that drawing, not a universal fitting rule.
How the plan works
- Put the machines on the back wall, with their fronts aligned so the doors open into the central area.
- Use the side wall for the shallow ledge. At 12 inches deep in the example, it is suitable for folding small items, sorting, or holding a basket rather than spreading out large loads.
- Keep shelves or hooks above the ledge for detergent and clothespins, while leaving enough vertical room to use the counter comfortably.
- Reserve a clear route from the entry to both machine doors. The real door swing and appliance projections determine whether the illustrated open area remains available.
This arrangement keeps the washer and dryer at a familiar, reachable height and avoids the compatibility question that comes with stacking. Its cost is function: the side ledge is narrow, and adding a sink or a deep cabinet usually removes the very standing space that makes the plan workable.
When to choose it
Choose this version when you already fold most clothing in another room, when a 12-inch ledge is enough for towels and sorting, or when separate machines are important. For front-loaders, a continuous top over both units can create a broader folding surface, but it also uses wall area that might otherwise hold shelves. For top-loaders, do not install a fixed top that interferes with the lid.
Layout 2: side-by-side machines with a compact utility sink
The same Designing Idea guide shows a compact sink near the entrance and shelving along the opposite wall. Its example basin is 21×24 inches. The plan is useful for understanding the trade-off: the sink occupies the location where a dedicated folding counter would otherwise go.
What this layout is good at
- Soaking stained garments before a wash cycle.
- Rinsing muddy shoes, cleaning cloths, or small household items without using a bathroom basin.
- Keeping wet work close to the entry so dripping items do not cross the whole room.
What it cannot do at the same time
A 21×24-inch example sink plus its cabinet, faucet clearance, and door interaction leaves less room for a fixed worktop. Plan to fold on the machine tops only if the machines and their controls permit it, or use a removable board that can be stored vertically. A sink cabinet may also need filler strips or a different door hinge position so its door does not collide with the room door or an appliance door.
Keeping the sink and washer plumbing on a shared wall can make the concept simpler, but it does not establish that your home’s drains, venting, supply lines, or floor structure can accept the work. Have the actual route assessed before closing walls.
Layout 3: stacked pair with a dedicated counter
Stacking is the biggest space-saving move in a 5×7 room. A cited example places a stacked washer and dryer beside a 30×24-inch counter and 12-inch-deep shelving. The freed footprint can become a genuine work surface instead of a narrow ledge.

Plan the vertical stack first
- Select the washer and dryer models before drawing cabinets.
- Confirm in the manufacturers’ documentation that the two models may be stacked together.
- Buy the approved stacking kit, if one is required; do not assume two machines from the same brand or two machines of the same width are compatible.
- Check the finished height of the controls and dryer door. Stand in the proposed location, or make a full-size mock-up, to verify that every control and lint filter is reachable.
- Leave the service access specified by the installation documents. A stack that technically fits but cannot be pulled out or opened for repair is not a successful layout.
Use the released space deliberately
The 30×24-inch counter in the example is deep enough for sorting and folding, while the 12-inch shelves handle detergent and smaller supplies. You can substitute a closed cabinet, a hanging rail, or a pull-out hamper, but each addition consumes part of the standing area. Keep the counter edge clear of the stack’s door path and avoid placing a sharp corner where someone turns while carrying a basket.
Who should avoid this option
Stacking may be frustrating if the dryer opening or controls are too high for the people who use it, if a household member cannot safely reach the lint screen, or if the selected pair lacks an approved stacking method. Those are practical and safety questions, not matters that can be solved by a drawing alone.

Layout 4: stacked machines with a sink and tall storage
Another example plan fits a stacked pair, an entry-side sink, and a broom or linen cabinet. Instead of a permanent worktop, it uses a pull-out folding board. This combination is the most multifunctional, but it has the least uninterrupted counter area.
Allocate each wall by task
- Stack wall: Keep the machines together and provide the approved electrical, water, drain, and vent connections.
- Entry zone: Place the sink where wet items can be set down immediately, while checking that the basin cabinet does not sit inside the door arc.
- Tall cabinet: Use a broom or linen cabinet for vertical storage, but verify that its doors can open when the washer or dryer door is open.
- Folding board: Install a pull-out or fold-down surface that can be stowed when the room is being used as a passage.
This plan works when a sink and closed storage matter more than a broad permanent counter. The example dimensions illustrate the compromise; redraw the walls with your own sink cabinet, door swing, and appliance depths before purchasing anything.
Where to put a folding counter in a 5×7 room
Counter over front-loaders
A continuous top over front-loading machines gives a stable surface without adding another cabinet footprint. It is most useful when the machines are already side by side and the room has no place for a separate counter. Make sure the top can be removed or the machines can be serviced as required by the installation instructions. Do not use this solution over a top-loader if the lid needs that space to open.
Shallow side counter
The 12-inch ledge in the side-by-side example is a realistic way to gain a dedicated surface while preserving the central aisle. It suits folding washcloths, towels, and small stacks. It is not equivalent to a full-depth countertop, so plan where large garments will be folded.

Stacking makes the 30×24-inch example counter possible. This is the strongest choice when folding is a primary activity rather than an occasional task. Keep baskets from spilling into the route between the entry and the machines.
Pull-out or fold-down board
A retractable board is useful when the same wall must also hold a sink or tall cabinet. Choose hardware rated for the board’s load, provide a support or locking mechanism, and verify that it can be extended without hitting the open appliance doors. Store it folded when carrying wet laundry through the room.

Door location can decide the plan
An inward-swinging door consumes standing and loading space exactly where a small laundry room needs it. The example plans favor an outswing or a pocket door. An outswing preserves the room’s floor area but requires a safe landing zone in the hall. A pocket door avoids a swing arc but needs a suitable pocket wall free of plumbing, wiring, structural posts, and other obstructions.
Check all three movements together
- Draw the door leaf and its full swing arc at the finished wall location.
- Draw each washer and dryer door fully open, including handles and baskets.
- Mark the standing position needed to load and unload each machine.
- Show the sink cabinet doors, pull-out board, and tall-cabinet doors open.
- Walk the route with a full laundry basket. If any open door blocks the only standing position, revise the arrangement before choosing finishes.
A second small-room guide published October 4, 2026 illustrates an outswing door with overhead shelving and notes a pocket door where the hallway cannot accept an outswing. Its stated clear areas and ventilation suggestions are design guidance, not verified building-code requirements for every location.

Measure these items before drawing cabinets
- Room shell: Finished width and depth at several points, ceiling height, trim, baseboards, and permanent obstructions.
- Appliances: Exact model width, height, cabinet depth, door projection, hose and vent projections, knob locations, and service-access requirements.
- Loading type: Front-load or top-load. A counter above a top-loader must not block the lid.
- Door: Slab width, hinge side, swing arc, threshold, hallway clearance, and whether a pocket-door wall is structurally and mechanically possible.
- Sink: Basin and cabinet dimensions, faucet reach, supply and drain positions, trap space, and the way the cabinet door opens.
- Work surfaces: Counter depth, support points, standing room, shelf reach, and access to remove appliances for service.
- Stacking: Manufacturer-approved pairing, required kit, finished stack height, and access to controls, lint filter, and service panels.
- Utilities: Electrical circuit and receptacle location, water supplies, drain, dryer vent or approved ventless arrangement, and any local requirements.
A manufacturer sizing guide visible in search results also recommends comparing configurations and gathering measurements early. Because its full page was not available for verification here, use the installation documents for your selected products rather than treating a generic sizing chart as a clearance standard.
Utilities and construction checks
Electrical
Washer and dryer power requirements vary by model and location. Confirm voltage, amperage, receptacle type, circuit arrangement, and disconnect requirements with the product manuals and applicable local rules. Do not place a cabinet or counter where it prevents access to the receptacle or service shutoff.
Water and drain
Verify hot and cold supply positions, shutoff access, drain height and routing, and the sink’s trap and vent requirements. A layout that puts the washer and sink on one wall may shorten runs, but the actual plumbing design still needs professional review where required.
Dryer exhaust or ventless operation
Vented dryers need a route, termination, and clearances appropriate to the model. A ventless dryer changes the planning problem but still needs the installation conditions specified by its manufacturer. Do not use a generic ventilation dimension from an example drawing as proof of compliance.
Floor, walls, and moisture
Check that the floor is level enough for the machines and that the wall can carry shelves, cabinets, or a fold-down board. Select moisture-tolerant finishes and leave a way to inspect for leaks. These construction decisions are separate from the room’s nominal 35-square-foot area.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the room comfortable to use
Reach and visibility
Place everyday detergent and stain supplies between shoulder and waist height for the primary users. Put rarely used items higher, but do not make a high shelf the only location for products needed every load. A stacked dryer can move controls and the lint filter above a comfortable reach, so test the actual height rather than relying on a drawing.

Lighting and task zones
Provide even ceiling lighting plus task light over a counter or sink. Keep switches accessible from the entry and avoid placing a shelf where it casts a shadow over the control panel. A light-colored, washable backsplash behind the sink and counter makes splashes easier to spot.
Sorting and baskets
Use vertical hampers, a narrow pull-out, or a shelf sized to the baskets you already own. Measure the basket width and handle clearance; a cabinet that fits on paper may be unusable if a loaded basket cannot turn through the doorway.

Noise and vibration
Level the machines according to their manuals and consider how vibration will travel through the floor and adjacent rooms. Keep rigid shelves and cabinet sides from touching a vibrating appliance. This is especially important when a counter bridges two side-by-side machines.
A practical planning sequence
- Survey the finished room. Record wall-to-wall dimensions, ceiling height, trim, obstructions, and the door’s complete swing.
- Choose the appliance arrangement. Decide whether side-by-side access or released floor area from stacking better serves your household.
- Obtain the exact manuals. Confirm dimensions, connection locations, service access, venting, and stacking compatibility before finalizing the drawing.
- Draw appliance rectangles and door arcs. Include hoses, vents, handles, and the space a person needs to stand and turn.
- Add the non-negotiable feature. Place the sink, counter, or storage element you value most, then test every door and pull-out open.
- Route utilities. Coordinate electrical, water, drain, vent, and shutoff locations with qualified trades where appropriate.
- Mock up the heights. Use cardboard or tape to test the stacked controls, sink rim, counter, shelves, and folding board with a real basket.
- Review maintenance access. Confirm that filters, valves, traps, and appliance panels can be reached without dismantling permanent work.
- Finalize cabinetry and finishes. Only after the measured layout works should you order doors, counters, shelving, or a pocket-door system.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Designing from advertised appliance depth
Symptom: The machines fit the drawing, but the doors or hoses project into the route.
Fix: Redraw using the installation dimensions and every projection. Recheck the door arc and standing position with the machines open.
Adding a sink without removing another function
Symptom: The basin fits, but there is nowhere to fold or turn with a basket.

Which 5×7 layout should you choose?
- Choose side by side with shelves if separate-machine access is your priority and folding can happen elsewhere.
- Choose side by side with a 12-inch ledge if you want a small in-room folding and sorting surface without adding a sink.
- Choose side by side with the example 21×24-inch sink if soaking and rinsing are more valuable than a permanent counter.
- Choose a stack with the example 30×24-inch counter if you want the most useful dedicated folding area and can safely reach the dryer.
- Choose a stack with sink and tall cabinet if closed storage and wet-work capability outrank a fixed folding top; plan a pull-out board.
Whichever concept you select, replace every example dimension with the finished room measurements and exact product documents. The best plan is the one that leaves a usable loading position, a workable door, and service access after all connections and trim are installed—not merely the one whose rectangles fit on a sketch.
