Turn a clean, empty food can into a practical desk organizer for pens, pencils, paintbrushes, scissors and other small supplies. A single can needs only a covering or finish; a group of cans can become separate compartments on a stable base. Choose the decoration method that matches your materials, the look you want and the drying time you can allow.

What this project makes
This upcycling project gives a food can a second use instead of sending it straight to the recycling bin. You can leave one can freestanding as a pencil holder, or combine several cans into a cluster that separates writing tools, brushes and scissors. The can itself is the main structural part, so purchased craft supplies are optional rather than essential.
For a one-can organizer, the most accessible finishes are a paper wrap, painted surface, tissue-paper pulp, stickers, washi tape, fabric or ribbon. A grouped organizer needs one extra decision: whether the cans will stand independently or be fixed to a firm base made from wood, cardboard or another solid material. The Museum of Craft and Design advises testing the arrangement before gluing so you know the footprint and balance in advance.

Safety comes before decoration
Inspect the rim before you handle the can
Open cans can have uneven, sharp or damaged edges. Crayola’s instructions state, “Be careful of any uneven edges on the tin can! Adult assistance required.” Treat that as a preparation rule, not as a minor warning. Run your eyes around the opening before washing, measuring or decorating. If the rim looks sharp, bent, jagged or uncertain, set that can aside or have an adult handle the preparation. Do not assume that paint, paper or a strip of decorative tape makes a dangerous edge safe.
The available project instructions do not establish a validated way to repair a hazardous cut rim. One yarn-wrapped-can search result mentions sandpaper, but the full tutorial was not available to verify how that procedure is performed or whether it makes every rim safe. Use a can whose opening is already safe to handle, or let an experienced adult manage any edge issue.
Match supervision to the project
Crayola labels its pencil-holder activity for ages eight and up, tweens and adults, while the Museum of Craft and Design recommends adult supervision for ages five and up for its broader desk-organizer project. Those labels apply to their respective activities; they are not a universal age rating for every tin-can craft. Children should not handle a sharp can rim, cutting tools or spray paint without direct adult control.

Work in a suitable area
- Use a washable, well-ventilated workspace and protect the surface from glue and paint.
- Keep the opening facing away from your hand while you inspect or decorate it.
- Let wet glue and paint dry where the can cannot be knocked over or touched accidentally.
- Do not load the organizer until the finish and any assembly adhesive are fully dry or cured.
Materials and tools
Gather the items that fit your chosen method rather than buying everything listed.
- One or more empty food cans with the contents and label removed.
- Water, dish soap and a cloth or towel for cleaning and drying.
- Decorative paper, tissue paper, fabric, stickers, washi tape or ribbon; choose one finish or combine materials deliberately.
- Glue suitable for paper or the material you selected. Crayola’s paper method uses a glue-and-water mixture.
- A paintbrush for applying glue or paint.
- Acrylic craft paint if you want a painted finish or want to tint tissue pulp.
- Optional: a wood, cardboard or other solid base for a multi-can arrangement.
- Optional: a ruler, pencil and scissors for measuring and cutting a paper wrap.
The can is the reused component. Glue, brushes, paper and paint are optional categories; use what you already have when possible.

Prepare the can
- Empty the can. Remove all food and liquid so no residue remains inside.
- Remove the label. Peel it away and lift off adhesive that could keep a covering from lying flat.
- Wash thoroughly. Clean the inside and outside with water and dish soap.
- Dry completely. Wipe the can and leave it open until no moisture remains. A damp surface can interfere with paper adhesion and paint curing.
- Inspect again. Check the rim and the body for sharp metal, dents that could make the can unstable, or residue you missed during washing.
For several cans, prepare every can before you start decorating. Keeping the containers identical is not required; different heights can be useful, but they change how the finished group balances.
Plan a multi-can organizer before gluing
Arrange the compartments
Place the empty cans on the desk in possible layouts: a straight row, a compact cluster or staggered heights. Put the supplies you expect to store nearby and check whether the openings are easy to reach. The Museum of Craft and Design recommends prototyping the layout before attaching cans. This dry run reveals whether scissors need a taller compartment, whether a short can will be hidden, and how much desk space the group occupies.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Decide whether you need a base
A single can can stand on its own. A group may be more stable when fixed to a wood, cardboard or other solid base, especially if the cans are tall, narrow or arranged asymmetrically. A base also lets you lift the whole organizer as one unit. If you use one, keep the footprint large enough for the planned arrangement and make sure the base itself sits flat.
Mark the final positions
Once the layout works, trace or lightly mark where each can will sit. Decorate the cans before final assembly when the decoration needs unobstructed access to the sides. Wait until the finish is dry enough to handle, then attach the cans with an adhesive appropriate for both the can and the base. Follow that adhesive’s own directions rather than borrowing a drying time from a different product.
Method 1: paper-wrapped tin can pencil holder
This is the quickest low-mess finish when you have decorative paper and glue. Crayola’s upcycled pencil-holder method combines equal parts glue and water, wraps a colored page around the can and allows two hours of drying.

- Measure the height. Place the ruler beside the can and note the distance from the bottom to just below the rim. Leave the opening clear so the paper cannot become a hidden sharp edge.
- Measure the circumference. Wrap a strip of scrap paper around the can, mark where it overlaps and transfer that length to the decorative sheet. A slight overlap is easier to manage than a gap.
- Cut the wrap. Trim the paper to the measured height and circumference. Test-fit it dry before applying glue.
- Mix the adhesive. Crayola specifies equal parts glue and water for its paper method. Stir only enough for the piece you are applying.
- Apply an even coat. Brush the mixture over the back of the paper, avoiding puddles that could wrinkle it.
- Wrap and smooth. Align one edge with the can and roll the paper around the body. Smooth from the center toward the seam to press out bubbles and keep the overlap flat.
- Secure the seam. Brush a thin coat under the overlapping edge and press it down.
- Dry for the method’s stated time. Crayola says two hours for its paper-covered holder. Keep the can undisturbed for that period, then check that the surface is dry before handling it.
Paper allows patterns, maps, drawings or solid colors without requiring a complicated build. It is also easy to replace if you later want a different look.
Method 2: tissue-paper pulp with paint
DIY Joy’s tutorial uses softened tissue, glue and acrylic paint to create a thicker, textured surface. The layer thickness and moisture determine the wait: the instructions note that drying can take up to 24 hours.
- Soften the tissue. Tear tissue paper into small pieces and moisten it according to the tutorial’s process so it can combine with the adhesive.
- Combine the materials. Mix the softened tissue with glue and acrylic paint until the pulp has the color and consistency you want.
- Build the surface. Press the mixture onto the clean can in an even layer. Keep the rim and the bottom edge clear enough that the can remains comfortable to handle and sits flat.
- Shape the texture. Smooth it for a low-relief finish or leave intentional ridges and patterns. Avoid creating a thick lump on one side, which could affect balance.
- Let it dry fully. DIY Joy notes that thicker tissue pulp can take up to 24 hours. Do not load the can while the center still feels cool, soft or damp.
This method gives more texture than a paper wrap, but it also adds moisture and thickness. Use the full drying window when the layer is substantial.
Method 3: painted cans and simple surface decorations
Paint-only finish
Acrylic paint can provide a clean solid color or a painted pattern on the prepared metal. Apply thin, even coats with a brush and allow each coat to dry according to the paint label. The Home Depot-hosted Rust-Oleum project guide gives a product-specific example: its spray paint is dry to the touch after 20 minutes and fully cured after 24 hours. Those figures apply to that guide’s paint and conditions, not to every acrylic or spray product.
If you use spray paint, follow the can’s ventilation, distance and overspray instructions, and protect the surrounding surface. Keep the opening clear and wait for the stated cure time before assembly or loading.

Washi tape, stickers, fabric and ribbon
These materials can be used alone or over a dry painted surface. Wrap washi tape in straight bands, place stickers as a pattern, or attach fabric and ribbon with an adhesive compatible with both surfaces. Press down seams and edges, especially near the bottom where the can is moved. The sources identify these decorations as suitable options but provide no comparative durability testing, so choose based on the look and handling your desk requires.
Assemble a grouped organizer
- Finish each can first. Complete the paper, tissue or paint method and let it dry or cure as directed.
- Recreate the tested layout. Put the cans back on the marked positions of the base.
- Check the balance. Confirm that no can overhangs the base and that the openings remain reachable.
- Apply adhesive sparingly. Use an adhesive suitable for metal and the chosen base. Excess adhesive can squeeze out and make the organizer rock.
- Hold each can in place. Follow the adhesive’s instructions for clamp, pressure or set time.
- Wait before loading. Keep the assembly empty until the adhesive has dried according to its label. A dry outer surface does not necessarily mean the bond has reached full strength.
After assembly, place heavier items such as scissors in a low or central compartment and lighter pens or pencils in the outer cans. This is a practical balancing approach, not a tested performance rating.

| Choice | Best when | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| One freestanding can | You want the least assembly and a small footprint. | One compartment; choose a safe, stable can. |
| Several freestanding cans | You need separate holders and may rearrange them later. | Each can must stand securely; the group can spread across the desk. |
| Several cans on a base | You want one movable organizer or a compact fixed layout. | Prototype the arrangement, use a solid base if needed, and allow adhesive to dry. |
| Paper wrap | You have decorative paper and want patterns with little mess. | Measure accurately, smooth the seam and allow the method’s two-hour dry time. |
| Tissue pulp | You want texture or a sculpted painted surface. | Layer thickness controls drying; DIY Joy allows up to 24 hours. |
| Paint | You prefer a solid color or hand-painted design. | Drying and curing are product-specific; a Rust-Oleum guide cites 24 hours for full cure. |
Drying, curing and handling checklist
Use the timing attached to your actual method and product.
- Paper wrap: Crayola specifies two hours for its glue-and-water paper holder.
- Tissue pulp: DIY Joy says thicker layers can take up to 24 hours.
- Spray paint: The Home Depot-hosted Rust-Oleum guide states 20 minutes to dry to touch and 24 hours to fully cure for its project.
- Other glue or paint: Follow the label; do not transfer any of the times above automatically.
When in doubt, wait longer. A surface that feels dry can still be soft underneath, particularly with thick tissue pulp or a heavy coat of paint.
Load and position the finished organizer
- Start with light supplies such as pencils, pens or paintbrushes.
- Check that the can remains upright and that the finish does not lift when an item is removed.
- Add heavier tools gradually, keeping them in a central or low compartment when possible.
- Place the organizer where it will not be struck by a chair, cable or frequently opened drawer.
- If a can rocks, unload it and correct the base or placement before continuing to use it.
This light-load check is a sensible final inspection; the cited projects do not report laboratory tests of load capacity or long-term wear.

Troubleshooting common problems
Paper wrinkles or bubbles
Too much glue mixture can saturate the paper. Lift and reposition it while the adhesive is still workable, then smooth from the center outward with a clean, dry hand or tool. For the next can, apply a thinner coat and test-fit the wrap first.
The seam keeps lifting
Check that the can was clean and dry and that the overlap is pressed flat. Add a thin line of compatible glue under the edge and hold it until it sets. Do not load the can until the seam is dry.
Tissue pulp stays soft
Thick pulp retains moisture. Move the can to a dry, ventilated area and allow the full up-to-24-hour window noted by DIY Joy, extending it if the center is still damp. Avoid adding another layer over soft material.
Paint feels dry but marks easily
Dry-to-touch is not the same as fully cured. Follow the paint label’s cure time; the Rust-Oleum guide’s 24-hour figure is specific to that product and project.
The grouped organizer wobbles
Return to the empty layout and identify which can or base edge is lifting. Reposition the cans within the base footprint or use a more substantial solid base. Let any new adhesive bond fully before testing again.
The rim is unsafe
Stop handling that can. Do not cover the edge and continue. Choose another can with a safe opening or have an adult take responsibility for the issue.
Ways to personalize the organizer
- Use one color for writing tools and another for brushes or scissors.
- Wrap each can in a different pattern while keeping the group visually connected by a shared ribbon or paint color.
- Cut paper labels for categories such as “pens,” “brushes” and “tools.”
- Combine a painted base coat with tape bands or stickers after the paint has cured.
- Use different can heights to make tall scissors visible while keeping short pencils easy to reach.
Decoration affects appearance and assembly effort, but the available instructions do not establish which finish lasts longest. Select materials according to what you have, the desk footprint you can spare and the amount of texture or color you want.
