Yes—you can make the farmhouse-style scroll with four main supplies: kraft paper for the sign, a self-adhesive wall decal for the lettering, glow-necklace tubes repurposed as the top and bottom rods, and twine for hanging. The build described by Refresh Restyle on August 2, 2019 is a lightweight paper wall decoration, not a weatherproof sign. It is suited to an office or another dry indoor wall.
Cut the paper to your layout, apply and burnish the decal, trim the sign while leaving the tutorial’s margins, fit the necklace tubes over the paper, tape cardboard end pieces in place, and tie on a twine hanger. The style reference means simple, tall, narrow lettering; it is not an official product or endorsement.

What you are making
This project turns a roll of kraft paper into a hanging scroll. The paper supplies the warm, matte background associated with farmhouse décor. A ready-made wall decal supplies the text, so you do not need a cutting machine or hand-lettering skills for the featured version. Glow necklaces are reused as structural tubes, and twine becomes the hanger.
Refresh Restyle’s exact-title tutorial was published August 2, 2019. Its instructions establish the assembly method, but they do not establish how long the paper, decal, tubing, tape, or twine will last. They also do not confirm current Dollar Tree product names, prices, dimensions, or inventory. Treat the store as a place to look for low-cost equivalents, not as a guarantee that the same items are stocked today.

Materials and tools
| Item | Role in the scroll | What to check before starting |
|---|---|---|
| Kraft paper roll | The paper body of the scroll | Choose a width and length that fit the lettering and the wall where it will hang. The related template tutorial’s 18–25-inch width guidance is for that separate template project, not a requirement for this decal build. |
| Wall decal | Fixed lettering or a simple phrase | Check that the decal fits with clear margins and that its adhesive is suitable for paper. |
| Glow necklaces and their tubes | Repurposed top and bottom rod structure | Keep the packaging; the tutorial uses cardboard cut from it to cover the tube ends. |
| Twine | Hanging loop | Use enough length to make a balanced loop without pulling the paper edges together. |
| Tape | Attaches the cardboard end pieces and helps secure the rod assembly | Use tape that grips the cardboard and tubing without soaking through the paper. |
| Old gift card or credit card | Smooths the decal onto the kraft paper | The edge should be clean and free of grit that could scratch or tear the decal. |
| Scissors or a craft knife | Trims the paper and cardboard | Cut on a protected surface and keep the paper flat. |
The four essential materials are the kraft paper, decal, glow-necklace tubing, and twine. The card, tape, and cutting tool are practical assembly aids. If a local store does not carry the exact items, match the function rather than the packaging: a paper roll, a paper-compatible adhesive decal, lightweight tubes, and strong cord all serve the same jobs.
Plan the lettering and margins first
Lay the kraft paper flat before you remove any decal backing. Decide whether the finished sign will be read vertically or horizontally and place the phrase so it has breathing room on every side. In the featured tutorial, the author leaves 3 inches at each side and 4 inches at each end. Those measurements are the dimensions of that project, not a universal rule; preserve them only if they suit your paper and design.
Measure the decal against the paper before committing the adhesive. A decal that nearly touches an edge will make the rod and trim work harder and can look crowded once the scroll curls. If the phrase is long, use a wider paper section rather than shrinking the letters until they are difficult to read from across the room.
Step-by-step: the decal scroll
1. Unroll and flatten the kraft paper
Unroll more paper than you think you need and let it relax on a clean, dry surface. Flatten obvious curls with your hands. Keep the paper dry; the tutorial is for indoor wall décor and does not test moisture resistance. Mark the intended top, bottom, and side margins lightly so you can align the decal without repeatedly lifting it.

2. Position the wall decal
Place the decal on the paper while its backing is still on, using the planned margins as guides. Check the phrase from the distance at which it will hang. Once the position is right, expose the adhesive gradually instead of dropping the whole decal at once. A gradual application gives you a chance to keep the lettering level and reduce wrinkles.
3. Burnish the lettering
Use an old gift card or credit card to smooth the decal down. Work from the center toward the edges with overlapping strokes. Press firmly enough to bond the adhesive, but do not drag the card so aggressively that you stretch the paper. Pay particular attention to narrow letter strokes and corners, where a small lifted edge can collect dust.
4. Trim around the design
After the decal is secure, trim the kraft paper to the scroll shape. Keep the 3-inch side and 4-inch end margins described by the original tutorial if you are following its proportions. Make long, controlled cuts so the edges stay straight. If you use a craft knife, protect the work surface and keep your free hand behind the blade’s path.
5. Fit the necklace tubes as rods
The tutorial repurposes glow-necklace tubes to hold the top and bottom of the paper. Test the paper and tubing together before taping anything permanently. The tubing should support the paper without sharply creasing it. Use the same approach at both ends so the scroll hangs evenly.

The original instructions also use pieces cut from the necklace packaging as end covers. Cut cardboard pieces that cover the open tube ends, then attach them with tape. The source does not specify a universal tube length or a single cutting pattern, so fit the pieces to the actual tubes you have rather than assuming a particular Dollar Tree size.
6. Add the twine hanger
Tie twine to the upper rod structure to create a hanging loop. Center the loop before lifting the scroll. If one side rises, retie the knot rather than forcing the paper to compensate. Keep knots and tape on the back or inside of the rod area where they are least visible.
7. Hang it indoors
Install the finished piece on a clean, dry wall and support it at the hanger’s center. Because the construction is paper-based, avoid bathrooms with heavy steam, outdoor exposure, damp basements, and locations where the sign can be splashed. The original project describes the result as office wall décor; that is the clearest supported use.
Optional alternative: transfer and paint your own design
If you want several interchangeable sayings rather than one fixed decal, a separate scroll-sign method from The Savvy Sparrow uses printed templates, carbon transfer paper, a stylus or ballpoint pen, permanent markers, acrylic paint, a wooden dowel, jute rope, hot glue, and binder clips. It is a related construction option, not a step in the exact Dollar Tree decal project.

That tutorial’s example roll is 25 inches wide, and its author says rolls between 18 and 25 inches wide should work with the supplied templates. Those dimensions belong to the template method. Do not treat them as a required size for the decal scroll.

Template-transfer sequence
- Prepare the design. Print the lettering and tape tiled pages together if the design is larger than one sheet.
- Layer the transfer. Center the assembled design over carbon paper and place both on the kraft paper.
- Trace without shifting. Use a stylus or ballpoint pen to follow every letter. Hold the template firmly; moving it during tracing can misalign the lettering.
- Fill the outline. Use a permanent marker for a crisp, graphic look, or add acrylic paint for a more textured finish.
- Protect the work surface. The tutorial’s author recommends putting a Dollar Tree foam board under the painted section to protect the floor and provide a smoother surface while dry-brushing paint.
- Assemble for swapping designs. The method uses a wooden dowel and jute rope, and binder clips can hold the rolled bottom. The author specifically favors binder clips over paper clips for this job.
Paint must dry completely before rolling the paper. Wet or tacky paint can transfer to the reverse side, stick to itself, or distort the lettering when the scroll is tightened.

| Decision | Wall-decal build | Template-transfer build |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | Unroll, position, smooth, trim, and assemble. | Print and tape pages, align carbon paper, trace, mark or paint, dry, and assemble. |
| Lettering flexibility | Best for one fixed phrase in an available decal. | Better when you want to create multiple phrases or designs. |
| Tools | Decal, card, scissors or knife, tubing, tape, and twine. | Printer, carbon paper, stylus or pen, marker or paint, dowel, rope, glue, and clips. |
| Scroll size | Choose dimensions around the decal and your wall. | The related tutorial gives an 18–25-inch paper-width range for its templates, with a 25-inch example. |
| Changeable artwork | Not designed for routine swapping. | Designed to display multiple designs by rolling the paper and securing it with binder clips. |
| Main alignment risk | Wrinkles or tilted adhesive during application. | Template movement while tracing can misalign the lettering. |
Choose the decal route when you want the fastest path to one clean sign and already have a suitable wall decal. Choose the transfer route when the lettering itself is the project, you need several designs, or you have the printer and painting supplies on hand.
How to get the tall, narrow farmhouse look
The style reference works because the design stays restrained: one short phrase, generous blank paper, and vertically oriented, narrow-looking letters. Keep decorative flourishes away from the main word so the sign remains legible. A dark decal or marker gives the strongest contrast against kraft paper; paint can soften the edges and create a more handmade appearance.

Do not force every phrase into a narrow strip. If letters become cramped, increase the paper width or shorten the wording. The scroll should look balanced before it is rolled; rods and twine cannot correct a layout that was crowded from the start.

The decal has bubbles or lifted corners
Stop before trimming and burnish the area again with the card, working from the center outward. If the paper itself has creased, do not keep stretching the decal to hide the crease; repositioning may be safer while the adhesive is still workable. A dusty or damp surface can also reduce adhesion.
The lettering is crooked
Check alignment with the paper edges before exposing the adhesive. For a template, secure the taped pages and carbon paper so they cannot slide; once a traced line is wrong, correcting the entire word is harder than preventing movement.
The scroll curls unevenly
Confirm that the paper enters both tubes at a similar depth and that the end covers are attached symmetrically. Recenter the twine hanger. Do not add weight to one side; the materials were selected for a lightweight paper decoration.
Paint shows through or sticks
Use a protective board under the paper while painting and allow the paint to dry fully before rolling. The foam-board recommendation comes from the related template tutorial and applies to its painted-paper method.

Substitute by function and verify fit before cutting. Inventory and prices are time-sensitive, and the 2019 tutorial does not confirm current stock. A different kraft-paper roll may change the width, while different tubes may change how the end covers and hanger need to be fitted.
Care and realistic expectations
- Display the sign indoors in a dry location.
- Keep it away from direct splashes, steam, and prolonged dampness.
- Lift it by the hanger rather than pulling on the paper edges.
- Store it flat or loosely rolled if you take it down; tight repeated rolling can crease the kraft paper.
- Inspect tape, twine, and tube ends before rehanging.
The project is valuable because it uses inexpensive, repurposed components to create customized wall décor, but neither cited tutorial establishes a service life or moisture tolerance. Plan to remake the paper section if it becomes torn, stained, or permanently creased.
