You can make a small snow-flocked Christmas wreath from a scrap of cardboard, fresh conifer clippings, hot glue and, if you want the snowy look, a white bar of soap mixed with water. The original tutorial from A Piece Of Rainbow, updated December 9, 2021, presents the project as a roughly 10-minute craft, with about five minutes devoted to gluing greenery onto each small cabinet wreath. Those times are the author’s estimates, not tested guarantees.
The “$1” title is a low-cost framing rather than a documented current price: the tutorial does not include an itemized cost calculation, and prices vary by location and by what you already have. The instructions below preserve the inexpensive idea while showing the dimensions, choices and limitations that matter when you make one.

What this project makes
The pictured wreaths are about 10 inches in diameter, sized for a kitchen cabinet door but also suitable for a wall or entry door if you make a larger form. The base is not a purchased wreath frame. It is a cardboard ring covered with overlapping fresh conifer cuttings, so the finished piece is light and easy to customize.
A 12-inch bowl traces the outside circle and an 8-inch lid traces the inside circle. That leaves a cardboard band about 2 inches wide. If your cardboard does not span the full ring, the tutorial says you can build the form from sections and glue those sections together before adding greenery.

Fresh cypress, holly or other red berries create the look shown in the tutorial. The author estimates that fresh cypress and holly or other berries can look good for two to three weeks, but species, room temperature, humidity and handling will change that result.
Cabinet placement is a distinctive part of the idea. A reader named Katie commented on December 24, 2021: “These cabinet wreaths look fantastic! Definitely going to do this with the snow flocking next year!”

Cabinet wreath
For a standard kitchen cabinet, the approximately 10-inch finished diameter keeps the decoration compact. Measure the cabinet face and the gap between neighboring doors before cutting several forms. Leave enough clearance that handles do not catch the wreath and doors can open without rubbing the greenery.

Wall or entry-door wreath
The same construction works at a larger scale, but the 12-inch bowl and 8-inch lid will not produce a large door wreath. Choose larger circular guides and plan for more clippings and glue. The 10-inch figure belongs to the small cabinet wreaths pictured in the tutorial, not to every size made with this method.
Cut the cardboard ring
- Lay the cardboard flat and place the 12-inch bowl on it. Trace around the bowl to mark the outside edge.
- Center the 8-inch lid inside the first circle and trace around it. Check the spacing in several places; the intended band is about 2 inches wide.
- Cut along both circles with a box cutter or craft knife. Work on a surface that can tolerate a blade, keep the non-cutting hand away from the cutting path and make several controlled passes rather than forcing the knife.
- Inspect the ring. Trim rough edges that could show through the greenery, but do not narrow the band so much that it becomes difficult to cover.
- If the available cardboard is too small, cut matching curved sections, overlap their ends and hot-glue them into a continuous ring. Let the joins set before you begin covering the front.
Cardboard does not need to be attractive: it only needs to stay rigid while you attach the branches. The greenery should hide it completely when the wreath is finished.

- Sort the clippings into pieces with similar direction and length. Remove visibly damaged portions and keep the stems long enough to overlap neighboring pieces.
- Choose a starting point on the ring. Apply hot glue to a short section of cardboard, then press a clipping into it while the glue is still workable.
- Place the next clipping so its foliage overlaps the first. Continue around the ring in the same direction, keeping the cut stems toward the inside or underside where they are less visible.
- Add glue to the cardboard rather than relying on glue placed only on needles. Press each stem briefly until the bond sets, taking care around hot adhesive.
- Turn the wreath as you work and check the outer and inner edges. Add pieces wherever cardboard shows through or the band looks thin.
- Finish by tucking the final stems under the first layer or placing them at the least visible join. Allow all glue points to cool before lifting the wreath.
The author’s five-minute estimate applies to gluing greenery onto each pictured small wreath. Dense clippings, a larger form or extra trimming will take longer. Overlap is the visual and structural rule: it hides the cardboard and makes both edges look finished.
Add berries or keep the wreath green
Red berries are optional. Add a few after the green layer is secure, placing them in small clusters or at intervals that balance the wreath. Glue their stems to the cardboard or to a sturdy branch, not to loose needles. If you prefer a quieter result, leave the wreath entirely green; the tutorial treats berries as an accent rather than a requirement.

| Choice | Result | Useful consideration |

| Greenery only | Simple, monochrome wreath. | Shows the foliage shape and keeps the material list shortest. |
| Greenery plus red berries | Higher-contrast traditional Christmas color. | The tutorial’s two-to-three-week appearance estimate includes cypress with holly or other red berries; actual life varies. |
Apply the optional homemade snow flocking
The tutorial describes homemade flocking made from a white bar of soap and water. It reports that the coating works on fresh Christmas trees and wreaths, dries after a few hours and does not flake off. Those are the tutorial author’s observations; the source does not provide independent testing or a broader safety assessment.
- Finish and cool the greenery-covered wreath before flocking so the coating is not disturbed by further gluing.
- Combine the white soap and water according to the tutorial’s method, adding water gradually until you have a spreadable coating. The source details the ingredients but does not establish a universal measured ratio, so consistency is a practical adjustment rather than a fixed specification.
- Test a small hidden patch first. Apply a light layer to the upper surfaces of needles and branches, leaving some green visible for contrast.
- Set the wreath on a protected surface and let it dry for several hours, as the tutorial reports. Drying time will depend on how heavily it is coated and on room conditions.
- Once dry, lift the wreath by the cardboard edge and inspect it. Touch up sparse areas only if the first layer is fully set.
Soap flocking is optional. Leaving the greenery uncoated avoids the drying step and gives a natural evergreen appearance; flocking adds the snowy finish that defines this version of the project.
Mount a cabinet wreath without damaging the door
Keep the wreath light by using only enough glue to secure stems. Before mounting, close the cabinet door and decide where the ring will sit relative to the handle. Use a removable hanging method appropriate for the door’s finish, or attach the wreath to existing hardware if that is safe for the cabinet. Do not let the wreath block the hinge side or prevent the door from closing flat.
For a wall or entry door, use a hanger rated for the finished weight and protect the surface from damp greenery. The cardboard form is light, but wet clippings and accumulated flocking add weight.

Keeping the wreath presentable
- Handle it by the cardboard ring instead of pulling the branch tips.
- Keep it away from heat sources and direct flame. Hot glue and dry plant material are not a combination to place near candles, stovetops or other open heat.
- Check the greenery periodically for drying, browning or loose stems. Remove pieces that no longer look good and re-glue fresh clippings if you have them.
- Use the two-to-three-week figure as the tutorial’s estimate for cypress and holly or other berries, not as a guarantee for every conifer or indoor environment.
- If the soap coating becomes visibly disturbed, let the wreath dry completely before touching up a small area.
Troubleshooting common problems
Cardboard is visible
Add overlapping clippings at the inner and outer edges first, then fill the center band. Short pieces can work as fillers when their stems are hidden under a longer branch.
Branches keep lifting
Use a fresh bead of hot glue on the stem or a bare cardboard spot, hold the piece in place until set and avoid loading the wreath before the adhesive cools. If a stem is too short to overlap, replace it with a longer clipping.

The ring bends
Reinforce the back with another cardboard ring or glue the original from sections with wider overlaps. Let every structural join cool before adding foliage.
The flocking looks heavy
Allow the first layer to dry before deciding whether more is needed. A lighter coating that leaves green visible usually reads more naturally than covering every needle.

The wreath no longer looks fresh
The tutorial’s estimate is limited to the plant combination and conditions described by its author. Replace tired clippings or remove the wreath rather than treating the estimate as a fixed service life.
How the options change the finished wreath
| Decision | Use this when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| About 10-inch form | You are decorating a cabinet or another small surface. | It uses less greenery but has less visual impact at a distance. |
| Larger custom form | You need a wall or entry-door wreath. | Requires larger guides, more clippings and more glue. |
| Soap flocking | You want a snowy appearance. | Adds preparation and several hours of drying; performance is reported by the tutorial, not independently tested. |
| No flocking | You want the fastest, simplest green wreath. | Lacks the snow effect. |
| Red berries | You want a traditional red-and-green accent. | Adds another material and may change how long the arrangement looks fresh. |
What “easy $1” means here
The project can be inexpensive when cardboard, greenery and tools are free leftovers or available in the yard, but the reviewed tutorial does not show an itemized calculation proving that the complete wreath costs exactly one dollar. Glue sticks, a cutting tool, soap and purchased greenery can raise the total, while reused materials can lower the out-of-pocket cost. Treat the dollar figure as the project’s budget-minded idea, not a current universal price.
