A clean mason-jar lid is the most manageable base for a handmade snowman ornament. Paint the lid, press white-painted fingers onto it to create tiny snowmen, add faces and hats, then tape a string loop to the back. The flat shape is easy to decorate and hang, while the handprint turns an inexpensive upcycling project into a dated keepsake.
This guide gives you the complete lid tutorial first, then explains cardboard-roll, fillable “melted snowman,” and salt-dough versions. Choose by the materials you have, the drying or hardening time you can allow, and how much tool supervision your makers need.

Choose the right snowman ornament format
All four projects make a tree decoration, but they do not work the same way. A mason jar lid is a flat painted surface. A cardboard roll becomes a lightweight three-dimensional figure. A clear fillable ornament encloses a loose “melted snowman” scene. Salt dough is shaped and then hardened, so it needs a longer finishing window.
| Method | Base and source-listed materials | Preparation and attachment | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mason jar lid handprint | Lid, acrylic paint, washable paint, paintbrushes, markers, string, tape and scissors; felt, pom-poms, ribbon and glue are optional decorating additions. | Paint and handprint layers dry before details are added. A short string is looped and taped to the back. | Crayola’s instructions specify 1–2 hours for the lid coat and another 1–2 hours for the handprint, subject to paint and room conditions. |
| Cardboard-roll snowman | Cardboard tube, paint, fabric or ribbon scraps, pipe cleaners, glue, scissors and ribbon. | The tube is painted; arm and hanger holes are made before the ribbon hanger is fitted. | KiwiCo describes a light, reused cardboard base and a simple assembly process. |
| Fillable melted snowman | Fillable clear ornament or jar, sand or salt, small face details and a fabric scarf. | Loose materials are arranged inside the clear container, which is then closed for hanging. | KiwiCo gives a short enclosed-container assembly sequence; it does not provide a durability test. |
| Salt-dough decoration | Salt dough plus decorating materials; cutters or shaping tools are optional. | Dough is modeled into a snowman or another decoration, then left to harden and baked as directed by the activity. | The Scouts activity notes that dough is not sturdy until baked and includes safety guidance. |
None of these sources reports controlled testing, so there is no evidence-based ranking for longest-lasting, safest-for-every-age, or mess-free design. Use the table to match the project to your available space, time and supervision.

Gather supplies for a lid snowman
For one handprint lid, set out:
- One clean mason jar lid (or several if making a group set)
- Acrylic paint and a paintbrush for the base coat
- White washable paint for the handprint
- Markers for faces, hats and other details
- String, tape and scissors for the hanger
Felt, craft foam, pom-poms, ribbon and glue can add scarves, hats, trim or raised details, but they are variations rather than requirements. Work on a protected surface because acrylic and washable paints can stain materials that are not covered.
How to make the mason-jar-lid handprint snowman
1. Prepare and paint the lid
- Wash and dry the lid so grease or residue does not interfere with paint adhesion.
- Cover the top of the lid with acrylic paint using a brush. The Crayola instructions call for a first drying period of 1–2 hours. Treat that as the tutorial’s guidance, not a universal guarantee: paint thickness, humidity, temperature and product formulation change drying speed.
- If the metal still shows through, apply an additional coat after the first one is dry. The extra coat is suggested for more opaque coverage.
2. Make the snowmen with a handprint
- Coat the fingers with white washable paint. Press the hand onto the painted lid to leave a row of finger-shaped snowmen. Keep the palm or lower hand positioned so the figures fit on the lid.
- Inspect the print while it is still workable. Fill thin gaps with a little more white paint if needed, then let the handprint dry for another 1–2 hours according to the tutorial.
- For a group project, make one lid per person or place several prints around a larger set of lids. Clean hands promptly according to the paint label.
3. Add faces, hats and a date
Use markers to draw eyes, noses, mouths and hat shapes on each finger snowman. Add scarf lines, buttons or a snowy ground if the surface has room. Writing the year on the ornament is an optional keepsake detail that makes the decoration easier to identify in future seasons.
4. Fit a secure hanger
- Turn the completely dry lid over.
- Cut a short piece of string and loop it into the hanging shape you want.
- Tape the joined ends firmly to the back of the lid. Keep the tape on the reverse side so it is hidden from the tree.
- Test the loop by lifting the ornament a few centimeters above the table. If the tape peels, replace it with a larger, firmly pressed piece before the ornament goes on the tree.
The result is a flat ornament that can sit close to a branch. Let every paint layer and adhesive finish drying before storing or hanging it.
Ways to customize the lid without changing the method
Use a non-handprint snowman
Paint a white snowman silhouette or several small circles on the lid, then draw the details with markers. This keeps the same base, drying schedule and taped hanger while avoiding a handprint.

Add soft or raised details
Glue a felt or craft-foam hat, a ribbon scarf or pom-pom buttons to the dry surface. Use only enough glue to hold the piece; bulky additions can make a flat ornament tilt on a branch. Allow the glue to set according to its label before handling.
Make a coordinated set
Repeat one background color and vary the marker faces, hat patterns or names. Date each lid on the back so a yearly collection can be identified without disturbing the front.
Alternative 1: cardboard-roll snowman
This version reuses a cardboard tube instead of a metal lid. You need the tube, paint, fabric or ribbon scraps, pipe cleaners, glue, scissors and ribbon. Paint the tube and let it dry. Cut or prepare fabric and ribbon for the scarf and other details, and bend pipe cleaners for arms. The project requires making holes for the arms and for the hanger, so plan those locations before pushing a tool through the cardboard.
- Paint the cardboard roll and wait until the surface is dry enough to handle.
- Mark the arm positions and the top hanger point.
- With adult help where appropriate, make the holes and insert the pipe-cleaner arms.
- Glue on the face, scarf and other fabric or ribbon details.
- Thread ribbon through the hanger hole, tie it securely and check that the tube hangs upright.
The cardboard base is light, but the source does not establish how it compares with other methods for long-term durability. Keep the tube away from moisture and avoid loading it with heavy embellishments.

Alternative 2: fillable “melted snowman” ornament
A clear fillable ornament or jar lets the snowman scene stay enclosed. KiwiCo’s materials include sand or salt for the melted body, small face details and a fabric scarf. Because the contents are viewed through the container, this design works best when details are large enough to see and the fill does not bury them.
- Open the clean, dry clear ornament or jar.
- Add the sand or salt to form the loose, melted snow base.
- Place the face details where they can be seen through the clear wall.
- Add the fabric scarf as the identifying snowman accent.
- Close the container completely and attach its supplied cap or hanging point before placing it on the tree.
The enclosed format keeps loose sand or salt inside during normal handling, but the source gives no test of seal strength. Check the closure each season and do not use a container with a cracked body or loose cap.
Alternative 3: salt-dough snowman decoration
Salt dough can be modeled into a snowman, a snowman face or another Christmas shape. The Scouts activity presents dough as a material that must harden and says it is not sturdy until baked. That makes this a better choice when you can reserve time for shaping, drying and baking rather than needing an ornament the same afternoon.
- Prepare the salt dough and shape it into the desired snowman or use a cutter for a flat decoration.
- Create a hanging hole while the dough is still workable, leaving enough material around the hole to reduce the chance of cracking.
- Let the shape harden and bake it according to the activity’s directions and the equipment you are using.
- Decorate the fully hardened piece with your chosen materials.
- Thread ribbon or string through the hole only after the piece has cooled and feels firm.
Do not treat an uncured or unbaked piece as ready for the tree. Dough’s final strength depends on its thickness, moisture and baking conditions, and the activity does not provide a comparative lifespan for finished ornaments.

Safety, supervision and age decisions
Choose supervision based on the actual tools and materials in your setup, not on a blanket age label. Crayola’s page metadata lists craft ages of 4 and up, 6 and up and 8 and up, but the search result does not identify which age applies to which individual step. Follow the label on each product and your supervising organization’s rules instead of assigning one age to the whole project.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check for allergies or skin sensitivities before using paint, glue, fabric, pipe cleaners or other materials. The Scouts activity specifically advises: “Double-check whether anyone has any allergies or skin sensitivities to any of the materials used in this activity.”
- Supervise scissors and any tool used to pierce cardboard, and store sharp tools securely out of young people’s reach when the activity ends.
- Use washable paint on skin only when the product label permits it; stop if irritation occurs and wash the area.
- Keep small face pieces, pom-poms and loose decorations away from children who may put them in their mouths.
- Protect the work surface and allow paint, glue and dough to dry or harden fully before handling.
Hanging and storage checklist
A snowman is ready for the tree when its paint and glue are dry, its dough is fully hardened and its hanger passes a simple lift test. Hold the loop and gently raise the ornament above a table; the attachment should stay in place without the base twisting or the decorations falling off. Place heavier or bulkier pieces on sturdy branches, and keep every ornament clear of lights that become hot.
For storage, wrap painted lids and dough pieces separately so raised details do not rub against neighboring ornaments. Keep cardboard and fabric decorations dry. At the start of the next season, inspect tape, ribbon knots, glued pieces, container caps and dough for cracks before rehanging.
Troubleshooting common problems
The lid still looks patchy
Wait until the first coat is dry, then add the additional acrylic coat suggested by the tutorial. Applying another layer while the surface is wet can pull up the base and extend drying time.

The handprint has empty spaces
Touch up thin areas with white washable paint before the print dries completely, then observe the full second drying period. Marker details belong on a dry surface.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The ornament hangs sideways
Reposition the taped string so the loop is centered relative to the lid’s weight. For a cardboard roll, check that the hanger hole is centered and that the scarf or arms are not pulling one side down.
A salt-dough piece feels soft
Do not hang it yet. Continue the hardening and baking process specified for the activity, then let it cool fully before adding ribbon.
Loose filler shifts in the clear ornament
Open the container over a tray, rearrange the sand or salt and face pieces, then close the cap firmly. Replace a damaged or unreliable container rather than relying on tape over a cracked closure.
Which project should you make?
Pick the mason-jar-lid handprint when you want the clearest instructions, a flat profile and a personal keepsake. Choose the cardboard roll when reusing a tube and building a light three-dimensional figure are the priorities. Select the fillable version when you want an enclosed scene with minimal exterior painting. Reserve salt dough for a shaped decoration when you can schedule hardening and baking. Each route uses ordinary craft materials; the practical difference is the preparation, attachment method and supervision your household can provide.
