For an old retaining wall that is still sound, the most affordable refresh may be a thorough clean, repairs to small defects, and a compatible finish. A cement-based resurfacer can renew bare concrete, but do not assume a product intended mainly for slabs is approved for a vertical retaining wall. If the wall leans, bulges, moves, or has serious cracks, get an on-site assessment before covering it.
First decide whether the wall is a cosmetic DIY project
A fresh surface can improve appearance; it cannot correct structural movement or the cause of water damage. Inspect the wall before cleaning or coating it. If it is leaning or bulging, appears to be moving, or has significant cracking or deterioration, pause cosmetic work and arrange an on-site assessment. General product instructions cannot determine whether a particular retaining wall is structurally sound or whether its drainage is working.
For a stable wall with surface wear, identify the actual goal: renewing the concrete’s appearance, filling isolated shallow defects, or reducing water penetration. These call for different materials.
#1 Best Overall
- Waterproofing Protection with Nanotechnology: Engineered with advanced nanotechnology to create a powerful water barrier—KILZ waterproofing paint blocks up to 12 PSI of water pressure to help stop water infiltration on concrete and masonry surfaces.
- Interior & Exterior Versatility: Ideal for both indoor and outdoor use—protects basement walls, masonry walls, stucco, brick, concrete blocks, and retaining walls. For below below-grade application, fill all holes/cracks with hydraulic cement prior to painting. Not for use on floors or on walls with active water leaks.
- Resistant & Alkali Resistant Finish: Formulated for high moisture areas, the resistant paint finish also resists alkali buildup, ensuring a long-lasting, decorative, and durable finish that stands up to tough basement and outdoor conditions.
- Low Odor & Easy to Apply: This low-odor formula is easy to apply, dries to the touch in 1 hour, and ready for recoat in just 4 hours. Fully cures in 7–14 days for washable, durable protection.
- Trusted KILZ Quality: Backed by over 50 years of expertise in surface coatings, KILZ products create long-lasting results you can be proud of for many years to come.
Choose the material for the job

|---|---|---|
| Cement-based resurfacer | Renewing sound, bare concrete. QUIKRETE’s product materials focus mainly on slabs; older project instructions also mention brushing it onto curbs or steps. QUIKRETE project instructions; product data sheet. | Confirm the current label or manufacturer guidance specifically permits vertical retaining-wall use. Check that the substrate is bare, sound concrete and that the intended application thickness and finish suit the wall. |
| Masonry patch compound | Localized shallow holes, cracks, and breaks. QUIKRETE describes its Concrete Patching Compound for defects up to 1/4 inch deep in concrete, stucco, or masonry walls. QUIKRETE product page. | That stated depth is a product boundary, not a general repair specification. For deeper or extensive damage, select a repair material rated for the defect and vertical application. |
| Concrete and masonry sealer | Water resistance with little intended change in appearance. QUIKRETE lists retaining walls among applications for its waterproofing sealer. QUIKRETE product page. | Check compatibility with the existing finish and current surface and moisture requirements. A sealer is not a resurfacing finish. |
How to plan an affordable refresh
1. Inspect and define the repair
Look for loose or flaking material, localized shallow defects, existing paint or sealer, and signs of movement or water problems. Do not use a new coating to hide evidence that needs assessment. Separate small surface repairs from deeper or widespread damage, which requires a product and repair method specified for that condition.
2. Confirm wall suitability before buying resurfacer
The cited QUIKRETE resurfacer instructions chiefly describe slabs such as driveways, patios, and sidewalks. Older project directions mention masonry-brush application on curbs or steps, but that is not blanket approval for retaining walls. Check the exact current product label or contact the manufacturer to confirm vertical placement, exterior exposure, permitted thickness, and compatibility with your concrete. If those conditions are not confirmed, choose a product explicitly rated for the wall application.

- 1) Water Based coating for sealing vertical interior and exterior concrete walls. Great for basement walls, foundations and retaining walls.
- Fast Drying waterproof paint for interior/exterior basement walls, cinder blocks, stucco and brick, and masonry.
- High alkali resistance – up to pH-13.
- Waterproofing paint keeps basement walls dry
- Paint only when surface and air temperatures are between 50 ° (10 °C) and 90 °F (32.2 °C).
3. Prepare the concrete as the product directs
For the cited QUIKRETE resurfacer, the manufacturer calls for rigorous cleaning, removal of loose or foreign material, and repair of damaged concrete before resurfacing. Its data sheet specifies bare concrete, not painted or sealed concrete. The project guide includes pressure washing in its preparation procedure; use the current instructions and safe practices for your site and equipment. Applying over dirt, loose material, paint, or sealer can undermine the result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Patch defects with a compatible material
For a small, shallow defect, a wall-compatible patch compound may be appropriate; QUIKRETE states its Concrete Patching Compound is for cracks, holes, and breaks up to 1/4 inch deep in concrete, stucco, and masonry walls. Follow the current package directions for application and curing. If a defect is deeper than that limit, covers a broad area, or indicates movement, do not treat this product specification as a repair plan.

- FAUX CONCRETE WALL FINISH: Creates a textured concrete look on ordinary interior walls without installing real concrete panels or materials.
- SEMI-TRANSPARENT MATTE FORMULA: Allows the coordinating primer or base coat to show through, creating realistic depth and dimension.
- DRYWALL, WOOD & HARDBOARD: Decorative interior wall paint transforms compatible surfaces into modern concrete-look accent walls.
- BRUSH-ON CROSSHATCH APPLICATION: Apply with a 3-5 inch brush in alternating directions and build multiple layers to achieve the desired concrete effect.
- FAST-DRYING WATER-BASED PAINT: Dries to the touch in 30 minutes, can be recoated after 1 hour, and cleans up easily with soap and water.
5. Apply only the finish that matches your goal
If the aim is a renewed concrete surface, apply resurfacer only after confirming it is approved for the wall and following the label for mixing, placement, weather, and curing. The older instructions’ brush method for curbs or steps may be relevant only if the current product guidance allows the intended vertical use.
If the aim is water resistance rather than a visible makeover, use a sealer whose current documentation lists retaining walls and follow its surface requirements. QUIKRETE’s vertical-crack tutorial also names concrete repair material or polyurethane sealant as possible materials for cosmetic and waterproof repairs to wall cracks; the appropriate choice depends on the crack and product directions. - Easy application; apply two layers using a stainless-steel trowel or a spatula to form a durable, decorative finish
- Versatile; suitable for both interior and exterior surfaces, residential and commercial; can be used to provide a smooth and durable surface on concrete walls or other concrete surfaces
- Popular and effective for finishing concrete surfaces; to hide imperfections or defects and to enhance the appearance and durability of concrete surfaces
- Achieve a smooth finish; use the correct tools and techniques to apply the plaster evenly, properly mix the plaster, ensure that the surface is clean and dry, and allow sufficient time for the plaster to dry and set
- Functional advantages: improve the fire resistance of concrete surfaces, protect the underlying concrete from moisture damage, and enhance the insulation properties of the wall or surface
What a DIY surface treatment cannot establish
A product’s stated application does not diagnose the wall, its drainage, or the cause of cracking. Nor does the available manufacturer information establish a universal resurfacer recipe for vertical retaining walls. For significant deterioration or signs of movement, seek an on-site assessment rather than relying on a cosmetic patch, overlay, or sealer.
