You can make a statement-size floral wall piece with printed paper cutouts, poster board, glue and a secondhand frame. The tutorial that inspired this project estimates 1–2 hours for assembly, plus one hour of drying before framing. Its “$5” label is an anecdotal target, not a guaranteed current budget: the author once found two frames for $4 each and mentioned poster board at about 50 cents per sheet.

What this wall-art project is
This project is a bouquet-style collage. You print flower, leaf, berry and stem shapes on heavy paper, cut them out, arrange them on poster board, glue the composition, and place the finished panel in a frame. The result resembles oversized botanical artwork but uses accessible paper-craft materials rather than paint or specialized equipment.

You can keep the arrangement airy and minimalist or build a dense garden of overlapping shapes. Because every component is separate until you glue it, the layout can be changed repeatedly while you work.

Materials and tools
| Item | Specification or use |
|---|---|
| Cardstock | 110 lb, 8.5 × 11-inch sheets for printed flowers and leaves |
| Printer | Home inkjet or laser printer |
| Poster board | Large sheets used as the collage backing |
| Frame | An 18 × 24-inch frame in the example |
| Adhesive | Glue or matte decoupage medium |
| Cutting tools | Scissors; a craft knife can help with very tight interior cuts |
| Reference aid | Phone or camera for photographing the unglued layout |
The tutorial says 110 lb cardstock holds its shape while remaining workable for cutting. A home inkjet or laser printer is acceptable, so use the printer you already have and select a setting intended for heavy paper if your model offers one.
The author identifies a 16-ounce matte decoupage glue as non-toxic and acid free. Those are the author’s product characterizations, not independent testing in this article. Any adhesive should be spread thinly enough to avoid soaking or buckling the poster board.
Before you start: choose the frame and background
Measure the visible opening
Check the frame’s actual opening rather than relying only on its outside dimensions. An 18 × 24-inch frame may conceal a small border under the rabbet, so trim the poster board to fit the back of the frame after measuring. If the frame includes a mat, decide whether the collage will sit behind it or replace it.
Find or refresh a secondhand frame
The tutorial’s author advises searching thrift stores for large frames and says they can be painted to suit the room. She reported finding two frames at a Salvation Army for $4 each. That is a personal historical example, not a current typical price. Inspect the corners, glazing, backing hardware and glass before buying; a low sticker price is less useful if the frame is warped or missing its retaining pieces.
Select the backing
Large poster board is the standard backing. The technique also works on a white-primed canvas or an older canvas that you paint white first. A white surface makes the pale edges around intricate printed clusters disappear. On a colored poster board, you will need to cut away the white surrounding each flower or leaf so the paper color does not show as an unwanted halo.
Printing and cutting the floral pieces
Print the four-page design set
The tutorial provides four pages of flower and leaf designs for personal use. Print them at their intended size on 8.5 × 11-inch, 110 lb cardstock. Before printing all pages, make one test sheet and confirm that your printer is not scaling the artwork to “fit” a different page size. Keep the printable files for personal projects only; the stated permission does not cover commercial use.

Cut according to the background
For a white background, the tutorial recommends cutting around an intricate cluster instead of tracing every tiny contour. The white paper blends into the white surface, allowing you to preserve a detailed group quickly. On colored poster board, remove the white around each individual element. Work slowly around narrow stems and pointed leaves, and leave a small connecting tab only when it helps a fragile piece survive handling.
Prepare adjustable stems
Do not assume every printed stem will suit your frame. The method specifically allows you to shorten or widen stems during assembly. Keep a few extra strips of matching cardstock nearby so you can extend a stem or bridge a gap without reprinting an entire page.
Step-by-step assembly
- Prepare the frame and backing. Clean the frame, remove dust from the glazing and measure the opening. Cut the poster board or prepare the white canvas so it fits without forcing the corners.
- Print and cut the pages. Use the 110 lb cardstock and your inkjet or laser printer. Organize flowers, leaves, berries and stems into separate piles so you can find shapes while composing.
- Arrange everything without glue. Start with the largest or most important flowers. Place them at varied heights rather than forming a rigid row. Add leaves and berries to establish the bouquet’s mass, then lay in stems and additional leaves to connect the elements.
- Photograph the layout. Take a straight-on picture before moving anything. Include the whole backing and enough detail to identify overlaps. This photo is your map if pieces shift while you begin gluing.
- Check spacing and silhouette. View the arrangement from several feet away. Look for a clear outer shape, balanced weight from left to right, and breathing room around the frame edges. Trim or reposition stems now, while every piece remains movable.
- Glue the main flowers first. Apply a thin, even layer to the back of each large flower and press it onto the poster board. Smooth from the center outward to reduce bubbles and curled edges.
- Add leaves and berries. Build depth around the main blooms. Keep some leaves partly under flowers and others extending outward so the bouquet does not look like a flat row of stickers.
- Finish with stems and small leaves. Use the photographed layout as a guide. Adjust stem lengths or widths as needed to close gaps and maintain natural-looking connections.
- Let the collage dry for one hour. Leave it flat and undisturbed. The tutorial’s one-hour drying instruction is separate from its 1–2-hour project estimate, so the total elapsed time includes this waiting period.
- Frame the finished panel. Once dry, place the collage in the frame and secure the backing. Reinstall the supplied glass if your frame has it, then clean fingerprints from the glazing before hanging.
How to create a convincing bouquet composition
Establish a focal group
Choose two or three large flowers as the visual anchor. Place them slightly off center and vary their scale or angle. A perfectly symmetrical cluster can look mechanical; a gentle diagonal usually reads more like a gathered bouquet.
Use leaves to control movement
Leaves act as directional arrows. Point some toward the outer edges and others back toward the flowers. Concentrate more foliage near the blooms, then taper the density along the stems so the design has a beginning, middle and end.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchAdd berries as small color punctuation
Berries fill narrow spaces that a large flower cannot. Place them in uneven groups rather than identical intervals. If one color dominates, move a few berries across the composition to distribute attention.
Protect the frame margins
Keep the outermost leaves and stems inside the visible opening. Paper that presses against the frame can curl or become hidden under the rabbet. A slightly irregular edge is fine; an overcrowded edge makes the artwork feel cramped.

| Figure | What it represents | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 hours | Introductory project estimate | Article-specific estimate from the January 27, 2025 tutorial |
| 1 hour | Drying time after gluing | Assembly instruction; it is not a guaranteed active-work duration |
| About 50 cents per sheet | Poster-board price mentioned by the tutorial | Current pricing was not verified |
| $4 per frame | Author’s reported thrift-store purchase | Personal historical anecdote, not a current market price |
Your total depends mostly on the frame, printer supplies and whether you already own adhesive and cardstock. The “$5” wording should therefore be treated as an example of a very low-cost find, not a promise that a complete 18 × 24-inch project will always cost five dollars.

Framing, glass and display choices
The author reports covering her finished collage with the glass supplied with her frame to keep dust out. Glass also reduces handling damage, but it adds weight and can create reflections near windows. If you use a frame without glazing, hang the piece where it will not be brushed by furniture, pets or cleaning tools.
Make sure the glued panel is fully dry before inserting it. If the poster board has curled, place it under a clean, flat weight until it settles; do not force a bowed panel into the frame because that can stress the paper and the frame corners.
Variations for different rooms and materials
White canvas version
Prime a canvas white, or repaint an older canvas with a smooth white ground. Arrange and glue the paper bouquet directly on the canvas. This removes the need for a separate poster-board panel and creates a frameless gallery-style option, although you should still protect the surface from moisture and abrasion.
Painted flowers instead of printables
You can substitute flowers you paint yourself. Keep the same sequence—large blooms first, leaves and berries next, stems last—but allow each painted piece to dry before handling. Painted shapes let you match an exact wall color or coordinate several rooms.
Colored backing
A deep or muted poster-board color changes the mood and increases contrast. Because white paper edges remain visible on a colored ground, cut closely around every element or paint the exposed edges to coordinate with the background.
Troubleshooting common problems
- Wrinkled poster board: Too much liquid adhesive is the usual culprit. Spread a thinner coat, press from the center outward and let the panel dry flat.
- Visible white halos: Recut the edges on colored backing. On a white background, use the cluster-cutting approach described above.
- Pieces moved during gluing: Work in small sections and consult the reference photo after each section. Place a clean sheet of paper over a glued area and press lightly rather than rubbing the individual pieces.
- Weak or curling stems: Shorten them, reinforce the back with a narrow cardstock strip, or replace them with hand-cut strips from a spare sheet.
- Composition feels heavy on one side: Return to the unglued photograph if possible, or temporarily cover the piece and view it from across the room. Move a leaf or berry cluster to counterbalance the dominant mass before final framing.
- Printables cannot be downloaded: Older comments say the download-library link was delivered in a welcome email and weekly newsletter. That comment exchange is old, so check the tutorial’s current instructions rather than assuming that route still operates.
Usage rights for the printable designs
The four-page designs are designated personal use only, no commercial use. You may make artwork for your home or as a personal gift under that stated restriction, but do not sell finished pieces made from the files, redistribute the printables, or use them in a product line unless the copyright holder grants separate permission.
Who should make this project
This is a strong choice when you want large botanical decor without drawing every flower by hand, have access to a printer, or need a composition that can be revised before adhesive is applied. It is less suitable when you need a weather-resistant outdoor sign, archival conservation-grade materials, or a guaranteed fixed budget. For an indoor wall, the method offers a quick way to turn inexpensive paper components and a frame into custom-sized art while leaving plenty of room for your own color, layout and painted alternatives.
