For clean, glossy marble, use a pH-neutral stone cleaner—or a small amount of mild liquid dish detergent—in warm water. Wipe with a soft, non-abrasive cloth, rinse with clean water, and dry completely. Remove grit before washing, blot spills instead of spreading them, and keep vinegar, lemon juice, scouring products, and unapproved chemicals away from the stone. Cleaning removes soil; it cannot repair etching, scratches, or worn polish. Light etching may respond to marble polishing powder, while deep damage and persistent stains call for a qualified stone-restoration professional.

Marble is a calcium-based stone. Acids react with its surface and dissolve or roughen the polished layer, creating pale, dull patches called etches. Sand, grit and abrasive cleaners can make finer scratches that scatter light. Soap residue, hard-water minerals, body oils and food films can also make a sound finish look cloudy without actually damaging the stone.

That distinction determines the remedy. Soil needs gentle cleaning; an acid etch needs polishing; a scratch or worn finish may need mechanical refinishing; and a deep stain may need a poultice or professional treatment. No cleaner can restore a surface that has been chemically or mechanically altered.
Choose a marble-safe cleaner
Read the label before using any product. The safest routine choices are a neutral stone cleaner, stone soap, or mild liquid dish detergent diluted in warm water. Use only enough detergent to lift soil; excess soap leaves a film and streaks.
| Option | Best use | Surface and residue considerations | Safety notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| pH-neutral stone cleaner | Regular floors, counters, walls and furniture | Designed for natural stone; verify that it is suitable for polished, honed or textured marble and compatible with any sealer | Follow the label, including dilution and dwell time |
| Mild liquid dish detergent plus warm water | Small daily messes and light soil | Rinse thoroughly because leftover soap can streak or attract soil | Use a small amount; do not substitute powdered detergent |
| Marble polishing powder | Small, light etch marks after the area is clean | Polishes rather than cleans; test first because sheen can vary between polished and honed finishes | Use the product directions, controlled pressure and appropriate eye and skin protection |
| Poultice product | Many absorbed oil, organic, metal, ink or paint stains | Method depends on stain chemistry and stone finish; residue must be removed completely | Use the chemical maker’s directions, ventilation and label-specified PPE |
When in doubt, test a hidden spot and allow it to dry fully. A product that is safe for one finish may change the appearance of another, especially on honed or textured marble.

Routine cleaning: the safe sequence
- Remove loose grit. Dust-mop or wipe away sand, crumbs and dirt before adding liquid. If you vacuum, use clean, unworn attachments so a trapped grit particle does not drag across the stone.
- Prepare the solution. Dilute a neutral stone cleaner or mild liquid dish detergent in warm water exactly as the label states. Do not increase the concentration to “clean better.”
- Use a soft applicator. Wipe with a clean microfiber or other soft cloth. For floors, use a non-abrasive mop. Keep the tool free of grit and change it when it becomes dirty.
- Wash without scouring. Work in manageable sections with light pressure. Do not use a stiff brush, scrub pad or rough sponge.
- Rinse with clean water. A second pass removes detergent and loosened soil. Change rinse water frequently rather than redistributing dirty water.
- Dry immediately. Buff with a soft, dry cloth. Complete drying prevents water spots and leaves less residue to haze the finish.
- Inspect under good light. If a dull patch remains after the surface is clean and dry, treat it as possible etching, scratching or wear—not as a reason to use a stronger cleaner.
- Maintain wet areas. After each shower or bath, pull a squeegee across marble walls and ledges. Removing standing water reduces soap-scum buildup and mineral deposits.
What to do when a spill happens
Speed matters because liquids can penetrate porous stone. Blot with paper towel or a clean cloth; do not wipe back and forth, which spreads the spill. Flush the area with water and a little mild soap, rinse several times, then dry completely.
| Stain category | Typical examples | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Oil-based | Cooking oil, grease, cosmetics | Use a stone-compatible poultice or cleaner specified for oil. Follow the maker’s dwell time and removal instructions. |
| Organic | Coffee, tea, fruit, food, leaves | Clean promptly with mild soap and water. An appropriate poultice may be needed if color has penetrated. |
| Metal | Rust, iron, copper | Use a product expressly intended for the particular metal stain on marble. Rust removers can etch stone, so professional treatment is often safer. |
| Biological | Mildew or algae in damp locations | Choose a marble-compatible treatment and correct the moisture source. Avoid improvised acidic or highly caustic chemistry. |
| Ink | Pen or marker | Use a stain-specific marble poultice or solvent only when its label permits stone use, with ventilation and PPE. |
| Paint | Drips and coatings | Do not scrape with metal or reach immediately for paint stripper. Use a stone-approved method; stubborn deposits may need a restorer. |
A poultice draws some absorbed material toward the surface, but it is not a universal cure. The correct powder, liquid, contact time and number of applications depend on the stain and the marble. Remove all poultice residue, rinse and dry before judging the result.
Vinegar, lemon and other products to avoid
- Acids: Vinegar, lemon juice and other acidic cleaners can etch or dull calcareous marble, even when diluted.
- Abrasives: Scouring powders, abrasive creams, rough sponges and stiff brushes can scratch polished or honed surfaces.
- Unapproved solvents and strippers: Paint strippers, rust removers and strong solvents can etch or permanently damage stone. Use them only when the label specifically permits marble, with required ventilation and PPE.
- Chlorine-ammonia combinations: Never mix bleach and ammonia. Natural Stone Institute guidance warns that the combination creates a toxic and lethal gas.
- Generic “all-purpose” products: A product safe for ceramic tile, glass or laminate is not automatically safe for marble. Check the label for natural-stone compatibility.
Keep chemical containers off the marble while working, and wipe up any accidental splash immediately with water. Gloves and eye protection are sensible for stain products; stronger chemicals may require additional PPE and ventilation specified by their safety documentation.

How to tell cleaning film from etching
Residue or soil
A film usually follows a spill, soap use or inadequate rinsing. It may feel tacky, look streaky, or improve when you rewash with a properly diluted neutral cleaner, rinse with fresh water and dry.
Acid etching
An etch is a lightened, dull or “water-marked” area that remains after thorough cleaning. It may follow contact with citrus, wine, vinegar, acidic bathroom products or other acids. Because the surface itself has been altered, repeated washing will not restore the reflection.
Mechanical wear or scratching
Traffic lanes, drag marks and fine lines indicate abrasion or finish wear. More detergent cannot correct them; they require polishing or refinishing appropriate to the stone.

Repairing a light etch with polishing powder
Marble polishing powder can sometimes blend a small, shallow etch on a polished surface. It is not a substitute for a restoration technician when damage is deep, widespread or uncertain.
- Clean, rinse and dry the area first. Remove any stain before polishing.
- Read the powder’s label for the required water amount, pad type, speed and safety equipment.
- Test in an inconspicuous location. Confirm that the resulting sheen matches the surrounding marble.
- Apply only the recommended amount. Use a damp cloth or suitable low-speed pad and controlled pressure; do not grind aggressively.
- Work until the manufacturer’s instructions indicate that the finish has returned. Keep the compound from drying outside the work area.
- Remove all powder residue, rinse with clean water and dry. Inspect from several angles under the normal lighting.
Stop if the spot grows, the color changes, the powder does not improve the reflection, or the finish becomes uneven. Deep etches, chips, nicks, severe scratches and large fields of dullness should be evaluated by a qualified stone-restoration professional.
When professional restoration is the right choice
- The mark remains after careful cleaning and stain treatment.
- Scratches can be felt with a fingernail, or the stone has chips, nicks or exposed edges.
- Etching covers a broad area or crosses seams and multiple pieces.
- Rust or another metal stain has penetrated deeply.
- You cannot identify the chemical involved, or the proposed treatment requires strong solvent, acid or caustic chemistry.
- The marble is historic, valuable, unusually thin, or part of a large installation where a patch would be conspicuous.
A restorer can identify the finish, select compatible abrasives and powders, control pressure, and blend repaired areas. Historic-marble procedures from the U.S. General Services Administration emphasize product literature, safety data, appropriate PPE and controlled pressure for cleaning and repolishing; those controls are useful benchmarks for any high-risk job.

Sealing: useful protection, not a shine coating
An impregnating sealer can reduce how quickly some liquids penetrate, giving you more time to blot a spill. It does not make marble stain-proof, and it is not a glossy coating that repairs dullness or etching. Sealing cannot replace prompt cleanup or correct a scratched finish.
Before applying one, confirm with the stone supplier or sealer manufacturer that the product suits your marble’s finish and location. Ask whether it is appropriate for food-contact surfaces. Follow the required surface preparation, coverage, dwell time, ventilation and cure period. Applying sealer over residue or moisture can trap problems and leave an uneven appearance.
Match the method to the marble finish
| Finish | Cleaning priority | Polishing and testing caution |
|---|---|---|
| Polished | Prevent grit, fingerprints, soap film and acids from breaking the reflection | Polishing powder may be suitable for a small etch, but a mismatched sheen is obvious; test first |
| Honed | Clean gently without creating shiny spots or burnished streaks | Do not assume a polished-stone powder will reproduce a honed appearance |
| Textured or brushed | Use a soft brush only if the maker approves it and rinse deeply in recesses | Residue can lodge in texture; aggressive scrubbing can alter the profile |
Troubleshooting common outcomes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Streaks after washing | Too much detergent, dirty rinse water or incomplete drying | Rewash with correctly diluted neutral cleaner, rinse with fresh water and dry with a clean cloth |
| Cloudy shower walls | Soap film or mineral deposits | Squeegee after use; clean with a marble-safe product. Avoid acidic limescale removers. |
| Dull ring after a drink | Acid etch rather than residue | Clean and dry, then consider a small test of polishing powder; escalate if it does not respond |
| Dark patch after an oil spill | Oil absorbed into the stone | Use an oil-specific poultice according to its label; persistent discoloration needs professional assessment |
| Fine lines in a traffic path | Grit abrasion or finish wear | Improve grit control and have the area evaluated for mechanical refinishing |
| Uneven shine after a DIY repair | Inconsistent pressure, pad or compound | Stop adding product; a restorer can blend the finish more safely |
A practical marble-care schedule
After each spill
- Blot immediately.
- Flush with water and a little mild soap.
- Rinse, then dry completely.
Daily or as needed
- Remove grit from floors and high-use surfaces.
- Wipe counters and tables with a soft cloth and neutral solution.
- Squeegee shower marble after bathing.
Periodically
- Inspect under strong, angled light for etches, scratches, failed caulk or sealer wear.
- Clean grout and joints with methods that do not spread abrasive particles onto the stone.
- Review the sealer manufacturer’s maintenance guidance rather than applying sealer on an arbitrary timetable.
Before a major treatment
- Identify whether the surface is polished, honed or textured.
- Identify the stain or damage type.
- Read the product label and safety data, prepare ventilation and PPE, and test a hidden area.
- Choose professional restoration when the damage is deep, extensive or chemically uncertain.
The bottom line for a lasting shine
Marble stays bright when grit, acids and residue are controlled: dust first, wash with a neutral or very mild solution, rinse with clean water, dry promptly and blot spills. Treat stains according to their chemistry, not with a stronger general cleaner. Use polishing powder only for a small, light etch that passes a test, and reserve deep etching, scratches, severe stains and uneven finishes for a qualified restorer.
