Soutache jewelry is made by stacking narrow decorative braids, stitching through them, and shaping the layers around beads or a focal piece. The result is dimensional bead embroidery—not braid simply glued or sewn flat as trim. Soutache is pronounced “SOO-tash.”
What soutache is—and how it differs from bead embroidery
Soutache is a narrow, flat decorative braid with a herringbone pattern. In jewelry, multiple lengths are layered and stitched into curves that frame beads and create a dimensional motif. Leia Gatch describes the stacked braid as “a more solid visual element and a stable base for the addition of beads” in Make: (July 23, 2015; the page also displays December 8, 2015).
Bead embroidery is the broader approach of stitching beads and other elements into a designed surface. Soutache jewelry uses that approach with braid as a prominent structural and decorative element. Depending on the design, the braid may be stitched directly into a motif or mounted on a separate foundation and finished with a backing.

Make: notes that soutache is also called “Russia braid” and briefly connects it with passementerie—the decorative trims used on clothing and furnishings. For jewelry-making purposes, the important distinction is how the braid is used: layered, stitched, and shaped around a focal detail.
What you need to start
Choose materials to suit the design; no particular brand or complete kit is required. A simple project may use braid and beads directly, while a more structured piece can add a foundation and backing.

- Soutache braid or cord: The defining material. One Beadaholique project uses The Beadsmith 3 mm soutache braided cord, but that width and brand are an example, not a requirement. To shop, search for “soutache braid cord” or “soutache cord.”
- Beading thread and a fine beading needle: Used to stitch the braid layers and attach beads. Matching thread can make stitches less conspicuous.
- Scissors: For cleanly cutting braid ends, which can fray.
- Beads or a focal piece: Seed beads, round beads, or a cabochon can be incorporated according to the design.
- Foundation and backing, when needed: A stiff beading foundation can support a motif; Ultrasuede or similar material may cover the reverse. Search for “beading foundation” or “Ultrasuede bead backing.”
- Findings or adhesive, for some designs: Earrings, pendants, rings, and other pieces may need findings such as jump rings or clasps. Glue appears in some project methods, but it is not a universal requirement.
How to build a soutache motif
There is no single required recipe. Tutorials demonstrate both direct construction with stacked braid and beads and supported designs built on a foundation. The choice depends on the shape, structure, and finish you want.
- Choose the focal point and layout. Decide whether you are framing a bead or cabochon, making a free-form curved motif, or building a design that will sit on a foundation. Plan the number and colors of braid strands around that focal detail.
- Align and stack the braid. Place the lengths neatly together, keeping their central channels aligned. A Beadaholique tutorial demonstrates arranging three colors; that is one example, not a standard strand count.
- Stitch through the braid’s center. Use a fine needle and beading thread to sew through the central channel or core, securing the layers. Add shaping stitches where needed to hold curves and keep the braid together. Beadaholique demonstrates this in its shaping-stitch tutorial.
- Curve the braid around the focal detail. Bind or stitch the stacked lengths around the bead or cabochon, adjusting the curves as the motif develops. Keep the layers snug and aligned rather than pulling so tightly that the shape distorts.
- Add beads and other embellishments. Stitch beads into the design where they complement or extend the braid pattern. Some beginner examples combine braid and beads directly; other designs secure the motif to a foundation first.
- Secure ends and finish the reverse. Cut braid ends cleanly and stitch them securely to limit fraying. If the design uses a foundation, attach backing as appropriate and add the findings needed to make it wearable.
Choosing a design and finish
Soutache techniques appear in earrings, pendants, rings, bracelets, and necklaces. Compare project instructions by their actual construction rather than assuming that all designs require the same skill level or materials.

- Skill level: A Perles & Co soutache ring is labeled intermediate. Publishers do not share a standardized skill scale, so treat labels as guidance for that project, not a universal rating.
- Foundation: Directly stitched designs avoid a separate support layer; a stiff foundation can help support a motif that needs more structure.
- Focal piece: Designs may frame round beads or a cabochon. The focal shape affects how the braid must curve around it.
- Strands and width: The number, color, and width of braid lengths change the motif’s appearance. Tutorials use different arrangements; none establishes a required count.
- Reverse and attachment: Some projects add backing and jewelry findings for a finished reverse and wearable attachment. Select these components for the item you are making.
The Perles & Co ring tutorial gives an estimate of five hours for that particular intermediate project, published May 31, 2017; it is not a general estimate for soutache jewelry. Its materials include a stiff foundation, a cabochon, thread, and seed beads. See the ring instructions for that construction. Common construction problems to watch for
- Fraying ends: Braid can fray when cut, so make clean cuts and secure the ends with stitching.
- Uneven layers: If the braid channels do not line up, stitching may be harder to hide and the motif may look irregular. Align the layers before securing them.
- Choosing materials without a design: Start with the focal piece and intended shape, then select braid, beads, and—if needed—a foundation and backing. Not every project needs every supply.
