Make inlay banding by gluing a precisely sized packet of veneer strips and solid-wood chips, then slicing that packet into repeated thin strips. A parallel-stripe packet is the most forgiving first project. Uniform stock, clean cuts, a flat glue-up, and a shallow, accurately routed groove determine whether the finished pattern looks crisp.

Banding versus stringing

Banding is a repeated geometric pattern assembled as a flat strip and embedded into a surface. Its pattern can create a three-dimensional illusion, but the material itself is flat. Stringing is a simple linear line used mainly as a border or separator. As Mario Rodriguez of Popular Woodworking puts it, “Banding and stringing serve different purposes.”

Banding is cut to show long grain rather than end grain, so the visible pattern remains clean and stable along its length.

Choose a pattern you can cut accurately

Pattern Why choose it Main difficulty
Parallel stripes Straightforward layout and a forgiving repeat; best first project Keeping every strip the same thickness and parallel
Checkerboard Strong contrast and a traditional geometric look Uniform chip sizing and careful alternating assembly
Sawtooth or diagonal Dynamic directional pattern Accurate 45-degree bandsaw setup, sled work, and alignment
Fine metric banding Delicate detail for small borders and furniture panels Very narrow components are difficult to handle and fit

Linear stripes can be mitered around a corner comparatively easily. Square and sawtooth patterns require more deliberate layout because the pattern must continue across the miter without shifting.

Start with contrasting, stable stock

Use straight-grained, knot-free, tight-grained woods with strong color contrast. Dyed harewood or black veneer paired with maple provides the dark/light contrast often sought from ebony and holly without requiring those premium species. Veneer is commonly available in 1/32-inch and 1/16-inch thicknesses.

Materials and tools

  • Veneer sheets or strips in contrasting colors
  • Sound solid-wood strips or chips for the pattern core
  • Table saw or bandsaw for ripping and slicing
  • Fine-tooth blade, stable fence, push stick, and zero-clearance throat plate
  • Jointing or planing tools to make one face and one edge square
  • Melamine-faced or tape-covered cauls, clamps, and glue
  • Trim router with a 1/4-inch downcut spiral bit and edge guide
  • Sharp chisel for squaring routed corners
  • Low-angle block plane or sander for flushing the installed strip

Use a standoff block and a tight-fitting miter gauge when cutting repeated chips. Discard chips with inconsistent dimensions; one bad component can interrupt the visual rhythm of the whole band.

Build a parallel-stripe packet

1. Rip and dry-stack the layers

For a practical stripe example, WOOD Magazine specifies one 3/16-inch maple strip, two 1/32-inch maple strips, and four black-veneer pieces. Arrange the layers in their final order and dry-stack them before applying glue. This catches reversed colors, gaps, and thickness errors while the packet is still easy to correct.

A finer Australian Wood Review example is 3.2 mm wide overall: two 0.6 mm black-veneer borders with two alternating 1.0 mm dark and light strips. That narrow format is delicate; a 6.35 mm (1/4-inch) version is easier for a first attempt.

2. Glue the packet between cauls

Cover the caul faces with melamine or packing tape so squeeze-out will release. Spread a thin, even coat of glue over the mating faces, assemble the layers, and clamp the packet flat. Cauls distribute pressure and prevent the stack from bowing; Popular Woodworking suggests clamp spacing of about 3 inches for even pressure.

  • Notes ~ Item's color might be different from the picture because of the aberration.

Check the packet from both ends before the glue sets. The edges should be flush, the layers should remain parallel, and no visible glue pocket should separate a veneer strip from its neighbor.

3. Flatten and square the cured packet

After curing, joint or plane one broad face flat and one edge square to it. A square reference face is essential: the bandsaw fence rides against it, and any error there appears in every sliced strip.

4. Slice the loaf into banding

Set the bandsaw fence approximately 1/8 inch from the blade for the WOOD Magazine stripe example. That packet produced about 13–15 strips in the published build. Popular Woodworking describes slicing a loaf into 1/16-inch strips with a fine blade, then re-planing the reference face after several cuts to keep the thickness consistent.

Make each cut with the packet firmly against the fence. Do not twist it to recover a wandering cut; stop, re-square the reference face, and reset the fence. Consistent thickness matters more than maximizing the number of strips.

Install the banding in a routed groove

1. Mark the run and test on scrap

Lay out the banding path before routing, especially where it will turn a corner. Use a scrap piece of the same material to test both width and depth. The Australian Wood Review’s 3.2 mm banding example uses a 1/8-inch cutter; for general installation, Guy Dunlap of WOOD Magazine recommends a 1/4-inch downcut spiral bit with an edge guide.

2. Rout slightly shallow

Set the groove depth a little shallower than the banding thickness so the strip will stand proud for trimming. Make a test pass, then widen the groove incrementally until the strip enters without force but has no visible side gap. A downcut spiral bit helps keep the surface fibers down as it cuts.

3. Square the corners

A router leaves rounded inside corners. Square each corner with a sharp chisel, cutting down into the waste and cleaning the shoulder without enlarging the groove. For a stripe pattern, plan miters at outside corners and keep the pattern registration visible as you mark the joint.

4. Glue, caul, and level

Apply glue in the groove and to the strip as appropriate for your adhesive, press the banding home, and clamp it with a caul that spans the work. Keep the caul from bonding by covering it with tape or using a release layer. Once cured, trim the strip flush with a low-angle block plane or sand carefully through the surrounding surface.

Quality and safety checks

  • Use a zero-clearance throat plate and push stick when ripping veneer or slicing chips.
  • Keep hands away from the blade and use stable fences or a sled for angled cuts.
  • Make a test cut before committing to the finished workpiece.
  • Reject veneer with splits, knots, or uneven thickness; defects become conspicuous when repeated in a pattern.
  • Confirm the packet is flat and square before every slicing session.
  • For diagonal designs, verify the 45-degree setup on scrap before cutting the packet.

The published procedures offer practical shop-safety guidance, but they do not provide controlled injury-rate or failure-rate statistics.

Which approach fits your project?

Project condition Recommended choice
First homemade banding 6.35 mm (1/4-inch) parallel stripes with high-contrast veneer
Small decorative border Fine metric banding, accepting slower assembly and more delicate handling
Bold geometric panel Checkerboard, if you can size every chip identically
Directional or chevron effect Sawtooth construction with a verified 45-degree sled setup
Run that turns a corner Parallel stripes for the simplest miter; use careful registration for checkerboard or sawtooth

Choose the method around your available saws, router, and guides, the dimensional tolerance you can hold, the amount of waste you can accept, and whether the installation must negotiate corners. The pattern is only as good as the least consistent strip in the packet.
