You can make a writable magnetic-fluid demonstration by mixing 50 ml of MICR toner with 30 ml of vegetable oil, as specified in a classroom activity from TeachEngineering. Stir until smooth, apply it to paper with an ink applicator, let it dry, then test the writing with a permanent magnet. It is an educational experiment, not a proven all-purpose ink formula.
What you need for the writing recipe
- 50 ml MICR toner
- 30 ml vegetable oil
- A beaker and stir rod
- A pen, stylus, or other ink applicator
- Blank paper
- A sealable container, such as a test tube with a stopper or lid
- A rare-earth or other permanent magnet for testing
- An apron and goggles; gloves are optional
These are the materials and amounts specified by TeachEngineering’s Magnetic Fluids activity, credited to the University of Houston College of Engineering. Toner can stain skin and clothing, so protect your work surface and clothing.

How to make and test the magnetic ink
- Pour 50 ml of MICR toner into a beaker.
- Add 30 ml of vegetable oil.
- Stir with a rod until the mixture has a light, smooth texture.
- Transfer the mixture to a sealed container when you are not using it.
- Use a pen or stylus to apply a small amount to blank paper. Let the writing dry.
- Move a permanent magnet near the writing and observe whether the ink responds.
The activity gives this as a classroom challenge, but does not establish consistent results across different toner brands, applicators, paper types, or storage conditions. Treat the quantities as the recipe for that activity rather than a guarantee of writing quality or magnetic response.
Why the mixture responds to a magnet—and what it is not
Ferrofluids contain magnetic particles dispersed in a carrier liquid. In engineered ferrofluid, the particles must remain small and separated rather than clumping together. The University of Wisconsin–Madison MRSEC background describes oleic acid coating magnetite in oil-based ferrofluid: one end interacts with magnetite while the hydrocarbon chain helps separate particles in oil. It gives a general particle size of approximately 10 nm; that is not a measurement of the toner-and-oil mixture.

The MICR toner activity does not describe synthesizing nanoparticles or adding the stabilizing surfactant process used in engineered ferrofluid. Do not assume this homemade writing mixture has the same stability or behavior. Some ferrofluids form surface spikes when exposed to a magnetic field, but that effect is not promised for this recipe.
A separate option: iron filings in oil
For a dish demonstration rather than writing, the National MagLab home activity uses a shallow dish, a thin film of oil, iron filings, and a magnet. Add filings until the mixture becomes thick and sludge-like, then move a magnet near the dish. The visible pattern depends on the amount of fluid, the container’s shape, and the strength of the magnetic field. This is a different activity from the MICR toner writing recipe, not the same formulation as engineered ferrofluid.

- Patented Anti-Tamper Security: Prevent check fraud by utilizing an extra layer of security to your printed checks. TROY’s MICR Toner Secure releases a red dye whenever chemical alteration is attempted, voiding the check.
- Precision-Matched: TROY’s unique manufacturing and testing process has produced a precision-matched toner for each specific printing machine. This helps maintain optimum laser printer performance.
- Prevent Toner Scraping: Toner scraping attempts are commonly used to commit check fraud. Because of the high adhesion of our toner, this type of fraud is nearly impossible to commit.
- MICR Readability: Printed checks using TROY toner result in high readability and legibility that not only meets but exceeds all ANSI and ABA banking standards.
- HP OEM: In 1993, TROY became authorized by HP to enhance HP Printers and consumables for use in secure check and document printing. TROY is now the only HP OEM partner authorized to modify HP printers and supplies for secure print applications.
The MagLab specifically warns not to pour its iron-filings mixture down the drain because it could clog pipes. For other materials or mixtures, follow local disposal guidance.
Handle magnets and toner carefully
- Wear an apron and goggles while mixing; toner may stain skin and clothes.
- Keep strong neodymium magnets away from phones, credit cards, computers, and other electronics.
- Prevent powerful magnets from snapping together: collisions can cause injury or shatter the magnets.
- Keep the mixture contained and clean spills using appropriate local guidance for the materials involved.
The magnet precautions are described in the University of Waterloo’s magnetic ink outreach article.

Choosing between the two activities
| Activity | Materials | Purpose and test | Disposal guidance in source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Writable magnetic-fluid demonstration | MICR toner and vegetable oil | Apply to paper, let dry, and test with a permanent magnet | Not stated in the TeachEngineering activity |
| Dish demonstration | Iron filings and oil | Move a magnet near the mixture in a shallow dish | National MagLab says not to pour it down the drain |
If you want to see a prepared display rather than mix materials, UW–Madison MRSEC also describes ferrofluid activities and cells, but that source does not verify a current seller or product model: MRSEC ferrofluid education resources.
