Maker Faire Bay Area’s 2026 event has concluded, and the organizer says the faire will return to Mare Island September 24–26, 2027. The 2026 edition took place September 25–27 at the Historic Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo as a 20th-anniversary celebration of the first Bay Area Maker Faire, which launched in 2006.
The faire brings technology and engineering together with craft, art, and hands-on activities. Its return to Mare Island paired maker projects with a historic shipyard setting, continuing the event’s mix of experimentation, demonstrations, and public participation.
A four-year pause, then a very different return
Maker Faire Bay Area returned in October 2023 after a four-year absence. Instead of returning to its longtime San Mateo home, the event took place at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo. The move gave the revived faire a new setting among waterfront promenades and historic industrial buildings.

The return brought veteran makers together with first-time participants. Maker Faire is not simply a display of finished objects: visitors can encounter projects being demonstrated, explained, adjusted, and sometimes repaired. The people who make the work and the process behind it are part of the experience.
Why Mare Island changed the atmosphere
Mare Island is widely described as the first U.S. Navy base on the West Coast. Located about 25 miles northeast of San Francisco and bordered by the Napa River, the historic naval shipyard is now also home to businesses, education, residences, and visitor infrastructure.
For Maker Faire, the setting creates a contrast between historic industrial spaces and new inventions. The waterfront and old shipyard buildings give exhibits, performances, and workshops a distinctive backdrop. The venue is not just a container for the event; it helps shape the experience.
For a painting-minded observer, the site offers a striking visual mix: weathered walls, shipyard geometry, river light, bright costumes, polished metal, exposed wiring, and moving machinery. The setting makes the faire feel less like a conventional trade show and more like a temporary gathering built around curiosity and making.

Maker Faire Bay Area spans a wide range of making. The organizer describes projects involving microelectronics, 3D printing, physical AI, food hacking, drones, robotics, art cars, rockets, fabrication, and interactive maker projects. Craft and hands-on activities sit alongside technology and engineering.
That range is the event’s focus, not a lack of one. A beginner’s first circuit and a large public installation can both begin with someone asking how an idea could become a physical thing.

The beginner end of the spectrum
Hands-on activities help lower the barrier to getting started. The 2026 program included examples such as an EMF Explorer Badge soldering activity, leatherworking, and craft workshops. These were specific offerings from that edition, not a promise of what will appear in a future program.
A visitor does not need to arrive with a workshop or advanced equipment. Small projects can introduce components, assembly, soldering, or the ways decorative objects can incorporate electronics.

An Arduino starter kit is one optional way to explore microcontrollers and simple interactive electronics at home. No specific kit was tested or endorsed by the event sources. Follow appropriate electrical and soldering safety practices, and choose projects suited to your age, experience, and workspace.
Computing that becomes tangible
Maker events give software and computing a physical presence. Projects using small computers can turn code into a display, instrument, controller, game, artwork, or household experiment. The organizer’s 2026 event description included microelectronics and physical AI among the broad areas of making.
A small-computer project can be a follow-on for readers interested in connecting software with sensors, screens, motors, or other components. Choose a project and hardware that match your experience; no particular product is required to take part in the maker community.
Fabrication, motion, and spectacle
The faire’s public-facing range includes robots and rockets, art cars, drones, electronics, fabrication, and interactive projects. Craft and engineering overlap in many builds: a costume may involve sewing and electronics, while an art car can bring together mechanics, paint, lighting, and collaborative design.

For readers interested in fabrication, a beginner 3D printer can open a path into additive manufacturing, but the machine is only part of the process. Learning basic modeling, material behavior, calibration, ventilation, cleanup, and safe operation matters as well. Seeing 3D printing at an event is an invitation to learn, not a guarantee that every print will work perfectly.
The event’s social magic: showing the work and sharing the process
Maker Faire’s appeal is not limited to any single category. A finished object can impress, but a conversation about why it was built, what failed, or how a design changed can make it more meaningful.
A large installation may draw a crowd, while a small table project gives a visitor a chance to ask a technical question. The event makes room for both spectacle and explanation.
Art and engineering often meet in the same project. Maker Faire treats those overlaps as strengths rather than forcing every build into a single discipline.
Maker Faire Bay Area 2026: what happened
The 2026 event was held September 25–27 at the Historic Mare Island Naval Shipyard, 560 Nimitz Ave, Vallejo, California. The organizer described it as the 20th anniversary of Maker Faire, tying that anniversary to the first Bay Area Maker Faire in 2006.
The historical schedule listed Friday as Field Trip Day, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. These dates and hours describe the concluded 2026 event, not the 2027 edition.

How to prepare for a visit
- Check current event information. Confirm dates, venue, hours, tickets, transportation, and the published program with the organizer before traveling.
- Choose a few priorities. Decide whether you are most interested in robotics, craft, interactive art, or hands-on activities, then use the published program to plan.
- Allow time for activities. Workshops and make-and-take projects may require reservations or separate admission; check the terms for the specific edition.
- Expect a mix of work. Some projects are polished, while others are prototypes or personal experiments. That contrast is part of the event’s educational value.
Keep the inspiration going after the faire
The most useful souvenir from Maker Faire may be a project idea rather than an object. Beginners can start with a small circuit, a simple mechanical build, a paper or fabric construction, or a modest software-and-hardware experiment. More experienced makers can use the event as a prompt to combine disciplines they normally keep separate.
Project books, magazines, project collections, and maker kits can help turn the excitement of seeing many projects into a manageable sequence of experiments. Choose material that matches your tools, age level, safety knowledge, and workspace rather than choosing a project solely because it looks spectacular.
The important lesson of the Bay Area faire is that making becomes more inviting when people can see many possible entry points. A soldering activity, a crafted object, a robot, and a large installation can all communicate the same message: complex things become less mysterious when someone is willing to test an idea and begin.
