The most workable idea in Laurel Bern’s two-part makeover is not to demolish the condo’s dominant stone fireplace. It is to make the fireplace less visually loud: remove the excess traditional trim and columns, reduce the floor’s glossy orange cast, then surround the stone with deeper, coordinated walls, trim, and drapery. Bern’s proposed color for that direction is Benjamin Moore Rocky Coast 1595. The intended result is a calmer room in which the floor-to-ceiling view, rather than a pile-up of competing finishes, becomes the focal point.
This is a design proposal, not a documented renovation. Bern published Part 1 on July 12, 2026, and continued the discussion in Part 2 on July 15. The apartment, its size, and its location are details reported in the article; no completed construction, final photography, project cost, or independently verified property record is established.

What the two-part makeover is actually solving
Bern describes a modern condo built in 2016, with floor-to-ceiling windows, three balconies, and a striking view. Part 2 identifies the home as approximately 1,600 square feet. The article places it in a popular western Canadian city beginning with V, but does not name the city. Those details belong to the article’s description, not to an independently verified listing.
The owners tried to make the contemporary apartment feel traditional by adding decorative features. Bern’s criticism is not that any one material is automatically wrong. The problem is that stacked stone, glossy cherry-colored flooring, extensive granite, and numerous traditional mouldings are all asking for attention at once. Several mouldings and columns are also poorly scaled for the room. With little useful wall space and areas Bern considers wasted, the additions create visual friction instead of a recognizable style.

That distinction matters if you are facing a similar room. The remedy is not “add more traditional details” or “strip everything modern.” First decide which existing element deserves priority. In this case, Bern treats the view as the asset and the fireplace as a fixed condition to manage.
Why the materials compete instead of coordinating
A modern shell carrying traditional decoration
A condo with large glazing and balconies has a strong architectural language before furniture or trim is installed. Adding heavy columns and elaborate mouldings can make the interior read as a costume applied to a modern box. If the proportions are wrong, each new piece calls attention to the mismatch.

Traditional references also multiply the number of visual boundaries. A stone surround, shiny floor, granite surfaces, casing, columns, and window treatments each create a separate edge or texture. The eye has no quiet plane on which to rest, so the room feels busy even when it is expensively finished.
Gloss and orange undertones amplify the floor
Bern specifically objects to the floor’s gloss and orange cast. A reflective, warm-toned floor can bounce window light across the room and compete with both the stone and the view. In a space already full of hard surfaces, that sheen makes the floor read as another feature rather than as a background.

The deeper issue is identity
Bern’s central diagnosis is a lack of coherent identity. The room is neither convincingly traditional nor comfortably modern. This is why changing one accessory would not solve it. A coherent redesign needs a hierarchy: one thing leads, supporting finishes recede, and decorative details reinforce the architecture instead of arguing with it.
The first proposal: keep the stone and make it recede
Changing a large stone installation may be expensive or impractical, especially in a condominium where demolition, disposal, waterproofing, structure, or building rules can complicate the work. Bern therefore builds her first direction around acceptance. She keeps the fireplace, but changes the visual context around it.

Bern summarizes the attitude with the sentence, “Sometimes we must embrace the ugly.” In her explanation, embracing the feature does not mean celebrating an eyesore. It means making the unavoidable element recede enough that the room can function around it.
Use a deeper, connected wall color
For the proposed family-room treatment, Bern selects Benjamin Moore Rocky Coast 1595 for the walls. The strategy is to use a deeper color that relates to the stone rather than placing the stone against a bright, high-contrast backdrop. When wall and fireplace sit in a closer value range, the irregular texture of the stone is less isolated and less dominant.

Rocky Coast 1595 is the named color in Bern’s concept, not a guarantee that it will look identical in another apartment. Window orientation, artificial light, the exact stone, flooring, and neighboring finishes can all change how a paint appears. Test a physical sample in the room at different times of day and confirm the current color and finish with the manufacturer or a retailer before ordering paint.
Carry the backdrop through the trim
Bern’s proposal calls for deeper walls and matching trim. The point is continuity: instead of outlining every casing and column in a contrasting light color, the trim supports the same quiet field as the walls. This reduces the number of lines competing with the fireplace and windows.

Removing excessive mouldings and columns is part of the same move. The goal is not to erase every detail, but to remove pieces that are poorly proportioned or that turn a modern room into a collection of unrelated frames. Before demolition, determine which trim is decorative and which conceals wiring, protects a joint, or is required by the building. A condominium board, property manager, or qualified contractor may need to approve changes.
Match the drapery to the visual field
Matching drapery helps extend the unified backdrop across the window wall. That does not mean blocking the view with a heavy curtain. It means choosing a treatment whose color and scale do not introduce another competing pattern or bright band. The windows remain a major source of light and outlook while the fabric supports the wall-and-trim envelope.

Refinish the floor instead of replacing the room’s identity
Bern proposes refinishing the floor to reduce its gloss and orange cast. A less reflective, less aggressively warm surface can act as a calmer base for the stone and furnishings. Refinishing is a finish decision, not an instruction to assume every floor can be sanded. The existing material, veneer thickness, damage, and condominium rules determine whether refinishing is feasible; a flooring professional should inspect it before work begins.
How to apply the strategy in the right order
The sequence below translates Bern’s design logic into a practical decision process for a similar condo. It does not represent work completed in the featured apartment.
- Record the fixed conditions. Photograph the fireplace, window wall, floor, columns, granite, and trim in daylight and at night. Note what cannot move, what may be structural, and what belongs to common building elements.
- Choose the visual priority. If the outlook is the home’s strongest asset, treat it as the star. Decide which interior finish must become quieter to support it; do not let every material remain a focal point.
- Separate decorative trim from necessary construction. Mark mouldings and columns that are purely ornamental, then have a qualified professional confirm that removal will not expose services or violate building requirements.
- Test the proposed wall color beside the actual stone. Place a large sample of Rocky Coast 1595, or any considered alternative, on more than one wall. View it beside the stone, floor, granite, and window light before committing.
- Plan the floor treatment after the wall direction is clear. Obtain an assessment of whether the floor can be refinished and specify the desired reduction in gloss and orange tone. A sample area can reveal how the stone and paint read against the new finish.
- Coordinate trim and drapery. Use the wall color as the reference for trim and fabric so the window wall does not become a separate, high-contrast composition.
- Reassess furniture and accessories last. Once the architectural background is quieter, keep only pieces that support the chosen hierarchy. Adding objects before the walls and floor are resolved risks recreating the original clutter.
Two ways to deal with a dominant stone fireplace
The series mentions more than one treatment across its parts, but the sourced details establish the darker, restrained direction only. The comparison below therefore distinguishes what is described from what remains unspecified.
| Approach | Stone treatment | Work and constraints | Visual priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retain and quiet the stone | Stone remains exposed and is visually blended with deeper walls, matching trim, coordinated drapery, and a less glossy, less orange floor. | Primarily paint, trim removal, drapery coordination, and floor refinishing; feasibility still depends on the floor and condominium requirements. | The view becomes more prominent while the fireplace recedes. |
| Alter or replace the stone | The article says changing the stone may be expensive or impractical; the series does not establish a specific replacement material or finished design. | Potentially substantial demolition and related approvals; no cost, schedule, or construction result is supplied. | Could change the fireplace’s prominence, but the article does not document the outcome. |
The table is not a recommendation to cover or remove stone blindly. Bern’s first proposal is valuable precisely because it offers a response when the fixed feature cannot reasonably be changed.

Making the floor, walls, and windows read as one room
Start with value, not a matching-material obsession
Coordination does not require every surface to be the same color or texture. It requires the transitions to stop competing. A deeper wall can reduce contrast around variegated stone; a restrained floor can stop reflecting attention upward; drapery can bridge the wall and glass without adding a new pattern.
Keep the view visible without making the room bare
Floor-to-ceiling windows naturally command attention. The proposed makeover does not call for removing the view’s supporting furnishings or treating the room as empty. It calls for reducing rival signals: glossy flooring, over-scaled mouldings, columns, and a high-contrast backdrop. Furniture placement, lighting, and art should be judged by whether they interrupt or reinforce the sightline.

Use trim as architecture, not decoration
In the described room, extensive traditional moulding contributes to the problem because it is poorly scaled. If some casing must remain, a unified color can make it read as part of the wall. If a piece is not needed and can be removed safely, subtraction may provide more benefit than another decorative addition.
What the makeover does—and does not—cover
Bern says the kitchen and bathrooms need major replacement. Those areas establish the overall condition of the condo, but the featured makeover option concentrates on the family room and the treatment of the stone, floor, walls, trim, and drapery. A homeowner should not interpret the family-room concept as a complete renovation specification for the entire apartment.
Likewise, the article does not establish renovation prices, paint availability, building approval, structural feasibility, or a final client result. It supplies a designer’s visual rationale. Before spending money, obtain trade assessments for the floor, electrical and mechanical conditions behind trim, fireplace requirements, and any condominium alteration rules.
Questions to settle before choosing paint or demolition
- Is the stone genuinely fixed? Confirm whether it is attached to a removable surround or integrated with construction that a building professional must protect.
- Can the floor be refinished? Identify the floor type and wear layer before assuming sanding is possible.
- What does the room look like in winter and summer light? The western Canadian setting described by Bern may have very different daylight conditions from another home; test samples under your own lighting.
- Which trim is doing useful work? Remove only decorative elements that a qualified person has cleared.
- Does the window treatment preserve the outlook? Select a fabric and operating arrangement that support privacy and light control without creating another dominant pattern.
- Are you solving the hierarchy or adding another feature? Every proposed finish should answer whether it helps the view lead, the fireplace recede, and the room feel intentional.
The practical takeaway from Bern’s unusual makeover
The strongest lesson is a hierarchy rather than a particular paint number. A modern condo can feel more coherent without pretending its architecture is something else. When a large stone fireplace is costly or impractical to replace, a restrained intervention—deeper coordinated walls and trim, simplified mouldings, matching drapery, and a floor with less gloss and orange—can reduce its visual dominance. Bern’s phrase “The reality is that the star of the show is the view!” captures the intended order: the outlook leads, the room supports it, and the fixed stone becomes part of the background instead of the entire story.
