What was City of STEM + Los Angeles Maker Faire?
It was a county-wide collaboration between City of STEM and Los Angeles Maker Faire, organized by the Los Angeles Public Library. The Make: article called it LA County’s Official Science Festival. The official event site says Los Angeles Maker Faire operates independently under license from Make: Community, LLC.

Was admission free, and where was the event?
For the 2025 edition, admission was described as free, family-friendly, and non-ticketed. Separate Eventbrite registration was available for a prize drawing and attendance estimates, but was not required to attend.
The location was Exposition Park South Lawn, 900 Exposition Park Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90037. The 2025 article described the event as outdoors and rain or shine, with limited shade. It advised visitors to bring sunscreen, a hat, and water in sunny conditions, or an umbrella or rain gear if rain was expected. These are details for that past edition, not a forecast or guidance for any future event.

What could families see and do?
The 2025 lineup combined exhibits, activities, and performances rather than focusing on one area of science. The Make: article listed workshops, panels with educators and scientists, and a career lounge powered by Microsoft. It also described an Angel City Football Club activation, Hot Wheels by Mattel, and a performance by Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County puppeteers and paleontologists.
Engineering, robotics, and student projects
Featured projects included an open-source rover, self-driving toy cars, robotics, 3D-printed robotics, and a Smart Search Drawer. Students were also featured using drones for AI-enabled wildfire detection.

The Los Angeles Maker Faire exhibitor page describes the Open Source Rover as a buildable, six-wheeled Mars rover with open-source plans. It is designed to teach how JPL builds rovers through cross-disciplinary work; it is an educational project, not simply a display rover.
Science guests and a planned book giveaway
Featured guests included science communicator and cartoonist Jorge Cham and science educator Jason Latimer. The Make: article said 100 students were to receive a copy of Cham’s Oliver’s Great Big Universe. That figure describes a planned giveaway, not the number of people who attended or a measured event outcome.

Making as creative practice
The article also highlighted maker art and Liz McFarland, described as a CRASH Space-affiliated maker with a background in cosplay and technical writing. McFarland’s stated view was: “Being a Maker means that I value creating for creating’s sake,”
