Malaysia Independence Day is celebrated every year on 31 August. Known as Hari Merdeka or Hari Kebangsaan, it marks the independence of the Federation of Malaya in 1957. Malaysia Day, observed on 16 September, commemorates the formation of Malaysia in 1963—a separate milestone.

Why is the date 31 August?
The date was set during the path to independence. According to the government’s history, the London Agreement was signed on 8 February 1956. Tunku Abdul Rahman announced at Padang Bandar Hilir, Melaka, on 20 February 1956, that independence would come on 31 August 1957. MyGovernment: Malaysian History
What happened as independence began?
The moments around midnight and the following morning are distinct parts of the historical account. MyGovernment’s national anthem page says that on the eve of 31 August 1957, the Union Jack was lowered and the Federation of Malaya flag raised at Selangor Club Ground, accompanied by Negaraku. It says the anthem was first played after midnight and has remained Malaysia’s national anthem. The Parliament portal separately records the declaration at Merdeka Stadium on 31 August.

Hari Merdeka and Malaysia Day: what is the difference?
| Observance | Date | Milestone commemorated |
|---|---|---|
| Hari Merdeka / Hari Kebangsaan | 31 August | Independence of the Federation of Malaya in 1957 |
| Malaysia Day | 16 September | Formation of Malaysia in 1963 |
MyGovernment’s official history distinguishes the Federation of Malaya’s independence in 1957 from the formation of Malaysia on 16 September 1963. The two dates therefore mark different events, rather than two names for the same anniversary. MyGovernment: Malaysian History

How is the anniversary observed?
The 31 August date is a recurring nationwide federal public holiday. Annual event details such as a national parade’s venue, schedule, and theme can vary; the government holiday listing confirms the date and holiday classification, not those event arrangements. For context, Tourism Malaysia described Merdeka as an annual national holiday commemorating the Federation of Malaya’s independence in its July 2014 bulletin; that older bulletin is not evidence of current event logistics.
