Marcel Duchamp’s *Fountain*: How a Rejected Urinal Became a Landmark of Modern Art

Duchamp’s *Fountain* was a rejected 1917 readymade, not a urinal rescued from a documented garbage heap. Its photograph, defense, and later versions carried the challenge forward.

Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain did not travel from a garbage heap into a museum: the documented story is that its 1917 original was rejected from an exhibition, then lost. The work’s influence grew through a photograph, a provocative defense in print, and later authorized versions. Its central challenge was not simply that a urinal could be art, but that choosing, naming, and exhibiting an ordinary object could expose who gets to decide what counts as art.

What happened to Fountain in 1917?

In spring 1917, Duchamp bought a urinal from the New York showroom of J. L. Mott Iron Works, signed it “R. Mutt,” titled it Fountain, and submitted it anonymously to the Society of Independent Artists. The Society had advertised a “no jury” policy, but rejected the object shortly before its exhibition opened. According to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Duchamp resigned in protest. The museum’s account of the Fountain scandal and SFMOMA’s collection record describe the dispute; SFMOMA notes that the rejection followed heated argument among the directors.

Alfred Stieglitz photographed the rejected object. In May 1917, the avant-garde journal The Blind Man printed the photograph alongside an unsigned editorial defending it. The episode made the conflict public: could an organization promise open admission and still draw a line around what it considered acceptable art?

Why did the defense argue that it was art?

The unsigned Blind Man editorial, as transcribed by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, argued that the decisive act was not making the urinal by hand:

“Whether Mr. Mutt with his own hands made the fountain or not has no importance. He CHOSE it. He took an ordinary article of life, placed it so that its useful significance disappeared under the new title and point of view—created a new thought for that object.”

This is a specific argument about artistic choice and context, not proof that every object automatically becomes art. Duchamp selected an object, gave it a title and signature, and submitted it to an exhibition. The decision to display or reject it then became part of the work’s meaning.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art describes readymades as mass-produced objects that Duchamp selected, signed, and sometimes inscribed. SFMOMA explains that the gesture challenged traditional ideas about artistic making and exhibition. Instead of treating skillful fabrication as the only route to art, Fountain asks what changes when an ordinary manufactured object is deliberately presented as an artwork.

What did the rejection reveal about the art world?

The Society’s “no jury” promise and its rejection of Fountain put its own authority under scrutiny. The museum accounts frame the episode as a test of how far a supposedly independent exhibition would go in accepting work that challenged prevailing standards. In a MoMA audio transcript, curator Michelle Kuo interprets the work as pointing to how people with power establish taste to maintain systems of convention and culture. That is Kuo’s interpretation, not a statement by Duchamp. MoMA’s audio transcript also presents Duchamp reflecting on his attempt to choose an object without aesthetic attraction; he described taste as “the great enemy of art.”

These accounts make the controversy more precise than the shorthand “anything can be art.” Fountain was the result of deliberate selection and naming, followed by a public disagreement over who had the power to define art and admit it to an exhibition.

Which Fountain is in museums?

The 1917 object is lost. Museum versions are later works, not the original urinal submitted to the Society of Independent Artists. The Philadelphia Museum of Art’s collection record distinguishes its 1950 replica from the lost original; SFMOMA identifies its own object as a full-scale version fabricated in 1964.

Version Status and details Historical role
1917 submission The original object, bought in New York and signed “R. Mutt”; lost shortly after the exhibition episode, according to the Philadelphia Museum of Art collection record. Rejected by the Society of Independent Artists; its photograph and defense appeared in The Blind Man.
1935–41 miniature A miniature replica included in Box in a Valise, as noted by the Philadelphia Museum of Art collection record. A distinct, reduced-scale version—not the full-size urinal made for the 1950 exhibition.
1950 version A secondhand Paris urinal acquired at Duchamp’s direction for the Sidney Janis Gallery exhibition Challenge and Defy; Duchamp authorized and inscribed it. The Philadelphia Museum of Art lists it as porcelain and gives its dimensions as 12 × 15 × 18 inches (30.5 × 38.1 × 45.7 cm). Artists including John Cage and Robert Rauschenberg saw this version in exhibitions during the 1950s and 1960s, helping the work circulate.
1964 version SFMOMA identifies its object as a fourth full-scale version, fabricated in 1964, made of ceramic, glaze, and paint. A later full-scale version of the readymade. The museum does not identify it as the original 1917 object.

The records establish these distinct versions, but not a complete, reconciled inventory or definitive total count. The Philadelphia Museum of Art’s 1950 object record and SFMOMA’s 1964 object record provide the version-specific details.

How did a rejected object become influential?

Fountain became influential through a sequence rather than a miraculous rescue. Rejection made the Society’s standards visible; Stieglitz’s photograph and The Blind Man defense allowed the dispute to circulate beyond the exhibition; and later replicas let artists encounter a work whose original had disappeared. The Philadelphia Museum of Art says John Cage and Robert Rauschenberg saw the 1950 version in exhibitions in the 1950s and 1960s.

Its lasting force lies in the question it leaves open: if artistic authorship can involve selection, naming, and context as well as manual fabrication, what role should institutions and viewers play in deciding what art is? The story does not require the original to survive—or a “garbage heap” to complete the journey. The documented controversy and the later versions show how the idea endured.
