To use Stable Diffusion 3 Medium in SwarmUI, make the model available to the interface, select it in the Generate view, and begin with the documented SD3 defaults. SwarmUI says CLIP-only text encoding is its default, Sigma Shift defaults to 3, and “Refiner Do Tiling” is recommended for SD3 upscaling.

Improve results by changing one prompt or generation choice at a time and comparing outputs. These are practical workflow suggestions, not a tested recipe or guarantee of a particular image quality.

What SwarmUI and SD3 Medium do

SwarmUI is an interface for working with image-generation models; Stable Diffusion 3 Medium is the model. The SwarmUI project’s Model Support documentation says SD3 Medium is supported and works as a normal model in the interface.

Stability AI describes SD3 Medium as a 2 billion parameter text-to-image model using an MMDiT architecture and three pretrained text encoders: OpenCLIP-ViT/G, CLIP-ViT/L, and T5-XXL. Its statements about prompt understanding and typography are the publisher’s descriptions of the model’s goals, not independent benchmark results.

Install or connect SwarmUI and select the model

Follow the official SwarmUI project instructions. The project’s Basic Usage guide describes choosing a backend, selecting a model, entering a prompt, and generating an image. ComfyUI is a documented local setup path; it is not the only possible arrangement.

  1. Install SwarmUI using the project’s current instructions.
  2. During setup, select or connect a backend. If using an existing ComfyUI installation, follow the guide to configure its model directory as needed.
  3. Make sure the SD3 Medium model files are available to SwarmUI and visible in its model selector.
  4. Open the Generate view, select SD3 Medium, enter a prompt, and generate a first image.

Choose SD3 text encoders and controls

Start with the documented defaults, then experiment only when you have a reason to. SwarmUI documents encoder selection and SD3 sampling controls, but the research does not establish a quantified quality or speed comparison across every prompt and setup.

Setting Documented starting point How to use it
Text encoders CLIP-only is the default SwarmUI describes CLIP-only as more performant, particularly on resource-limited systems. Try T5 or both encoders when your prompt needs justify the additional resource use; the documentation does not quantify the tradeoff.
Sigma Shift 3 This is SwarmUI’s documented SD3 default. The project suggests trying a value around 1.5 as an experiment and cautions against excessive adjustment.
Refiner Do Tiling Enable for SD3 upscaling SwarmUI recommends this setting for SD3 upscaling.

A practical first-generation workflow

  1. Start with the documented defaults. Use the default SD3 text-encoder behavior and leave Sigma Shift at 3 for the first run.
  2. Write a specific prompt. State the subject and add relevant details such as setting, lighting, composition, and visual style.
  3. Generate and review. Check whether the result matches the subject and composition you intended before changing settings.
  4. Change one thing at a time. For example, revise one prompt detail or compare Sigma Shift 3 with a value near 1.5 while holding other choices similar.
  5. Compare and keep useful results. Record the prompt and settings alongside images you may want to reproduce. This controlled comparison is practical advice, not a claim that one setting is universally better.
  6. Upscale after the composition works. For SD3 upscaling, enable “Refiner Do Tiling” as SwarmUI recommends.

Hardware expectations

SwarmUI’s installer gives a general recommendation of at least 8 GiB of VRAM for running SwarmUI properly. This is not an SD3 Medium-specific minimum and does not guarantee usable performance for a particular model, workflow, or GPU. The project says CPU execution is possible but extremely slow, and notes that GPU vendor support and setup vary.

For a local setup, check the current SwarmUI instructions for your hardware and backend. If local requirements are not a fit, Stability AI identifies API access as a hosted option for trying SD3 models.

Using SD3 Medium commercially

Before commercial use, read the current SD3 Medium repository license. It describes research and non-commercial use as well as conditional commercial use under the Stability AI Community License. The license states that users whose annual revenue, including affiliates, exceeds US $1,000,000 must request an enterprise license. Check the current terms and how they apply to your circumstances before commercial deployment.

FAQ

Is SwarmUI an image-generation model?

No. SwarmUI is the interface, while SD3 Medium is the image-generation model. The SwarmUI Model Support documentation says SD3 Medium works as a normal model in the interface.

Which SD3 text encoder should I start with?

Start with CLIP-only, SwarmUI’s documented default. The project describes it as more performant, especially on resource-limited systems; try T5 or both when your prompt needs justify the additional resource use.

What Sigma Shift should I use for SD3 Medium?

SwarmUI documents 3 as the default. It suggests trying a value around 1.5 as an experiment, not as a universally better setting.

  • Screw adjustment design - The graphics card bracket design can be compatible with various chassis configurations of traditional and long power supply bays to meet various user hosts.
  • Bottom hidden mag.net design - The mag.net hidden in the base is designed for easy installation and more stable standing in the chassis.
  • The workmanship of the detail process - The small graphics card support frame is made of three complex processes: polished anode, sandblasted anode and CNC high-speed edge-washing high-gloss process. The full anode process can maintain the durability.
  • Tool-free fixing module - The support module is equipped with a cushioning anti-scratch pad and a base high-gloss process.

What should I do before upscaling an SD3 image?

Enable “Refiner Do Tiling,” which SwarmUI recommends for SD3 upscaling.

Does SwarmUI require 8 GiB of VRAM for SD3 Medium?

No SD3 Medium-specific minimum is established by the supplied research. SwarmUI’s installer gives at least 8 GiB as a general recommendation for running SwarmUI properly; it is not a guarantee that SD3 Medium will run comfortably on a specific system.

Can I use SD3 Medium commercially?

Commercial use is conditional under the Stability AI Community License. Read the current model license; it says users above US $1,000,000 in annual revenue, including affiliates, must request an enterprise license.
