The most reliable Samsung-only way to put one photo over another is to turn the foreground subject into a custom sticker, then place it on a background image. Open the background in Samsung Gallery, choose Edit → Decorations → Stickers → Gallery → Create sticker, select the second photo, and position the cutout. On supported newer Galaxy devices, Photo Assist can also add an image with Galaxy AI, but availability and results vary by model, One UI version, account, and internet connection.
First decide what “overlay” means
People use overlay to describe several different results:
- Cutout overlay: a person, pet, product, logo, or object from Photo B placed on Photo A. Samsung Gallery’s custom-sticker tool is the best built-in fit.
- Full rectangular overlay: the entire second photograph placed above the first, potentially with opacity or blending. Samsung does not expose identical layer controls on every Galaxy model.
- Side-by-side combination: a collage, which is a different layout rather than an overlay.
In the examples below, Photo A is the beach, room, poster, or landscape that becomes the background. Photo B is the subject or image you want to add.

The fastest Samsung method: add a photo as a cutout sticker
Samsung documents this workflow for supported Gallery versions. Menu names and icons can differ by Galaxy model and One UI version. See Samsung’s custom-sticker instructions.
- Open Gallery and open Photo A, the image that will remain in the background.
- Tap the pencil icon to enter Edit.
- Tap Decorations, usually shown with a smiley-face icon.
- Tap Stickers, then tap the small Gallery icon inside the sticker picker.
- Choose Create sticker and select Photo B.
- Touch the subject you want to extract. If automatic detection is wrong, choose Free-form selection where available and trace the area yourself.
- Tap Next, select the least decorative sticker style for a natural composite, and tap Done.
- Drag, resize, flip, duplicate, or remove the sticker until the composition is right.
- Tap Done, then choose Save as copy whenever that option appears.
The subject remains movable while you are editing. After export, the result is normally a flattened image rather than a project with independently editable layers.

Move, resize, flip, and refine the overlay
Position and scale
- Drag the sticker to place it.
- Pinch in or out to change its size.
- Use Flip horizontal when the subject faces the wrong direction for the background.
- Use Duplicate or copy controls to create another instance, and Remove to delete one.
Improve a rough cutout
Automatic selection works best when the subject contrasts strongly with its background. Motion blur, fine hair against a similar wall, transparent objects, and overlapping people can produce unwanted fragments. Include the complete subject before confirming, switch to Free-form selection when offered, and remove stray pieces manually if the editor allows it. For exact masking, use a dedicated layer editor instead.
Use Photo Assist for an AI-assisted composite
On select Galaxy devices running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or later, Samsung’s Photo Assist can add an item from another image and generate or repair surrounding areas. Samsung’s instructions are at Photo Assist support.

- Open Photo A in Gallery.
- Tap Edit, then tap the Photo Assist icon.
- Choose Create or Add from image, depending on the software version.
- Select Photo B, position or resize the inserted subject, and let Galaxy AI generate the result.
- Review the image and tap Save as copy.
This route is useful when speed matters, when you want AI to fill a gap after moving an object, or when you are experimenting with a stylized scene. It is not a pixel-faithful copy-and-paste operation: AI can alter the subject or background, and details such as hands, hair, text, logos, and repeating patterns may be inaccurate.
- Samsung requires a compatible device, a Samsung account, and an internet connection for the documented AI workflow.
- Samsung says generated results may be resized to up to 12 megapixels and marked with a Galaxy AI watermark.
- Availability depends on hardware, region, and software version; owning a Samsung phone does not by itself guarantee Galaxy AI.
Adding a complete second photo
If you need the entire rectangular Photo B rather than a cutout, look for Add image inside Photo Assist or Creative Studio. Samsung’s standard Gallery documentation does not establish a universal, adjustable-opacity layer system on every Galaxy phone. If those controls are missing, use a layer-based editor for opacity, blend modes, masks, feathering, and multiple editable layers.

Samsung’s optional Creative Studio route is documented at Creative Studio support: open Creative Studio, choose Add image, select a Gallery photo, then use Decoration controls for a sticker, text, or image. It requires an internet connection and Samsung account on supported devices, and Samsung warns that edited images may be resized and visibly watermarked. Treat it as an AI-oriented design tool, not a guaranteed professional compositing workflow.
Preserve the original and undo mistakes
Samsung’s Gallery editor supports Save as copy and, for ordinary edits, Revert to original; labels vary by model. The Samsung editing guide explains these controls.

- Save as copy: creates a separate composite and leaves the source untouched.
- Save: may overwrite the edited version of the image.
- Revert to original: removes saved edits when that control is available.
Make the composite look believable
After placing the subject, use Gallery’s normal adjustment controls—such as brightness, exposure, contrast, highlights, filters, crop, and rotation—to reconcile the two images. Samsung describes these controls in its Gallery editing guide.
- Match the direction and softness of the light.
- Adjust the foreground’s brightness, contrast, and warmth to the background.
- Match perspective and apparent camera distance; keep the subject’s scale believable.
- Retain or create a contact shadow when the subject should sit on a surface.
- Do not mix a razor-sharp subject with a heavily blurred background unless that contrast is intentional.
- Zoom in to inspect hair and object edges before exporting.
- Crop both images with the final destination in mind, such as a social-media aspect ratio.
When “Create sticker” is missing
- Confirm that the image is open in Samsung Gallery, not Google Photos or another viewer.
- Tap the pencil icon first, then look for Decorations or the smiley-face icon.
- Open Stickers and look for the small Gallery icon inside it.
- Install available system, Gallery, and related app updates.
- Try a source photo with a clearly defined, high-contrast subject.
- Check the model and One UI version; Samsung says Gallery and AI features differ by device and software. See Samsung Gallery support.
- If the control is still absent, use a dedicated editor rather than assuming the phone supports Galaxy AI.
Choose an alternative when you need real layers
Samsung Gallery is free and fast for a simple subject cutout. A third-party editor is preferable when you need a full-photo layer, opacity, blend modes, precise masks, feathering, shadows, or a print-ready workflow.

Samsung’s Galaxy Enhance-X is another Samsung editing app, but Samsung presents it primarily as an enhancement tool, not the clearest answer for full photo overlays.

Common edge cases
- Older Galaxy: sticker cutouts may work even when Photo Assist does not.
- Galaxy A-series or regional model: features can differ from those on premium models.
- No internet: ordinary Gallery editing may continue to work while AI tools fail.
- Text or logos: prefer manual cutouts or a layer editor because AI can distort lettering and geometry.
- Transparent PNG: behavior varies by native workflow; test the file before relying on transparency.
- Large originals: Galaxy AI output may be reduced to Samsung’s stated 12MP maximum.
