Yes: an MCP-enabled Blender setup can let an AI client inspect a scene, create and modify objects, assign materials, set cameras and lights, render images, retrieve assets, and run Blender Python. But “the Blender MCP addon” is not one universal product, and the AI does not control Blender directly. The client calls an MCP server, which communicates with an addon running inside Blender.
The headline originally referred to the open-source ahujasid/blender-mcp project discussed by Hackaday on May 18, 2025. Since then, several unrelated Blender MCP implementations have appeared, with different toolsets, Blender-version requirements, connection methods, and safety controls.

The Model Context Protocol is an interoperability layer. It lets an AI application discover and call tools exposed by an external server. MCP is not an AI model and is not a native Blender feature.

In a typical Blender setup, the chain looks like this:
AI client
↓ MCP tool calls
MCP server
↓ socket, TCP, HTTP, or another bridge
Blender addon
↓ bpy
Blender scene
The AI chooses a tool based on your instruction. The server forwards the request, and the addon executes an operation through Blender’s Python API. Depending on the implementation, a tool might create a primitive, inspect the current scene, assign a material, produce a render, or execute a larger Python script.
What the original BlenderMCP project is
The project behind the original Hackaday story is ahujasid/blender-mcp, maintained under the ahujasid GitHub account. It is not Blender Foundation software and should not be described as an official Blender feature.

Or use a more controlled instruction:
Create a red cube at coordinates (2, 0, 0), add a subdivision modifier with two levels, and render the scene.

The system may turn those requests into a sequence of scene operations. It can also inspect the result and continue iterating when the implementation provides suitable feedback, such as scene data, screenshots, or render previews.
That does not mean the AI replaces a 3D artist. It may misunderstand spatial instructions, choose unsuitable modifiers, create poor topology, overwrite scene data, or produce an attractive render built from an unusable asset. UVs, normals, rigging, naming, collection structure, texture optimization, and reproducibility still require review.
Installing the original project
The original repository documents Blender 3.0 or newer, Python 3.10 or newer for the server environment, the uv package manager, and an MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop or Cursor.
1. Install the Blender addon
- Download
addon.pyfrom the project repository. - Open Blender and choose Edit → Preferences → Add-ons.
- Click Install… and select
addon.py. - Enable Interface: Blender MCP.
2. Install or launch the MCP server
The documented server command is:
uvx blender-mcp
For Claude Desktop, the repository gives this example configuration:
{
"mcpServers": {
"blender": {
"command": "uvx",
"args": ["blender-mcp"]
}
}
}
The exact configuration location depends on the client and operating system. A graphical application may not inherit the same PATH as your terminal. If uvx works in a shell but not in the client, use the absolute path to the executable where the client configuration permits it.

3. Connect Blender
- Start the MCP server through the AI client.
- Open Blender.
- Press
Nin the 3D Viewport if the sidebar is hidden. - Open the BlenderMCP tab.
- Optionally enable the Poly Haven checkbox.
- Click Connect to Claude.
- Confirm that the Blender tools appear in the AI client.
Do not launch a second copy of the same server manually while the client is already configured to start one. The original documentation warns against running duplicate instances, including simultaneous configurations in Claude Desktop and Cursor.
A safer first test
Use a disposable scene rather than an important production file. A sensible first exchange is deliberately small:
- Create a new Blender scene.
- Ask the client to add one cube.
- Move it to a specified coordinate.
- Assign a simple material.
- Set a camera and light.
- Render once.
- Save the file under a new, versioned name.
For larger jobs, work in stages: inspect the scene, add one subsystem, check the result, save a new .blend file, and only then continue. A prompt such as “build the entire game environment” gives you fewer opportunities to catch a destructive or structurally poor change.

How MCP differs from asking for Blender Python
You can already ask an AI to write Blender Python and paste the result into Blender. MCP adds a persistent interface and tool discovery. Depending on the project, it can also provide scene inspection and visual feedback, allowing a conversational loop instead of a one-shot script.
| Approach | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Manual Blender Python | Deterministic and easy to version-control | Requires more scripting knowledge |
| AI-generated script | Easy to review before running | The AI may not see the current scene |
| MCP tool calls | Persistent integration and iterative operations | Requires a server, addon, and client setup |
| Visual-feedback MCP workflow | Can inspect renders or viewport results | More moving parts and more context usage |
There is an important security qualification: if an MCP implementation exposes arbitrary Python execution, its safety boundary may be little better than running AI-generated code yourself. The convenience is real, but the code still deserves review.
The biggest risk: arbitrary code execution
The original project explicitly documents arbitrary Blender Python execution. Code running inside Blender can potentially modify scene data, access files available to the process, make network requests, or perform destructive operations. Treat AI-generated code as untrusted until you understand what it will do.

- Work on a copy of the
.blendfile. - Save before major operations and keep numbered versions.
- Do not open sensitive files in the same session.
- Review generated scripts before execution whenever possible.
- Prefer implementations offering checkpoints, whitelists, safe mode, or narrower tools.
- Keep bridges on localhost unless remote access is genuinely required and properly protected.
- Review addon source before installing unfamiliar packages.
“Runs locally” is not the same as “safe.” Localhost reduces network exposure, but it does not prevent a connected AI from making damaging Blender or file-system changes.
The Blender MCP landscape in 2026
Projects using the Blender MCP label are not interchangeable. Their advertised tool counts and features can change, so check the current repository before installing or pinning a workflow.
| Project or route | What it advertises | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
ahujasid/blender-mcp |
Original Hackaday subject; Claude-oriented socket bridge, scene tools, assets, and Python execution | Older setup; confirm current compatibility before mixing server and addon versions |
RFingAdam/mcp-blender |
218 tools, Blender 4.2 LTS and 5.0 support, render-analyze-refine workflows, and a default port of 9876 | The README contains conflicting license references; verify the current license before redistribution or commercial use |
harveyxiacn/blender-mcp |
359 tools across 51 modules, profiles, visual feedback, checkpoints, and Blender 4.x/5.x support | A very broad tool surface can increase context, maintenance, and selection complexity |
| Anthropic’s Blender connector | A Claude-oriented connector involving Claude Desktop and a Blender addon | Check current availability, supported desktop version, and plan eligibility in Claude |
dcc-mcp-blender |
Extension-style installation and more than 200 advertised tools | Its documentation distinguishes Blender Extensions installation from the legacy Add-ons installer |
cad-mcp-blender |
A smaller 51-tool design with checkpoints and viewport feedback | More focused than a large catalog, but still exposes powerful Blender operations |
For example, the RFingAdam project documents an MCP client-to-server stdio connection, followed by a TCP/JSON-RPC connection to the Blender addon, with port 9876 as its default. Its example configuration is:
{
"mcpServers": {
"blender": {
"command": "mcp-blender",
"args": ["--port", "9876"]
}
}
}
Other projects may use HTTP, embedded servers, or Blender Extension packages. Do not install an Extension-format ZIP through the old Add-ons route if the project specifically instructs you to use Get Extensions → Install from Disk.

The client cannot start the server
Check the client logs and the executable path. A GUI-launched application may not see the terminal’s environment variables. Replace a bare uvx command with an absolute executable path if needed.
The addon is installed but no tools appear
- Confirm that the addon is enabled.
- Open the correct 3D View sidebar panel.
- Activate the addon’s server or connection button.
- Confirm that the MCP server is configured in the client.
- Restart the client if it only discovers servers at launch.
- Check client logs for startup errors.
The connection fails or hangs
Check for a port conflict, a stale addon/server pair, a firewall rule, or a second server process. Stop duplicate instances and make sure the addon and server came from compatible versions of the same project.

A previous operation damaged the scene
Stop issuing new commands, undo if the result is reliable, and reopen the last known-good versioned file if it is not. This is why saving a new file before each major operation is more dependable than assuming Blender’s undo history will cover every bridge or script failure.
Why newer Blender versions require care
Blender’s Python API changes across major releases. A server designed around Blender 3.x may not behave correctly in Blender 5.x, and an addon built for one implementation should not automatically be paired with another project’s server.
Before installation, check:
- The exact Blender release supported.
- Whether the project expects a legacy addon or an Extension package.
- Whether the server and addon are pinned to compatible versions.
- Whether the client supports the project’s transport method.
- Whether the project is intended for GUI Blender, headless Blender, or both.
Large tool catalogs also have a cost. Hundreds of tools may provide wider coverage, but they can consume context and make selection harder. Profile-based systems that load a smaller set initially can be preferable for focused workflows.
External assets and generated models
Poly Haven and AI 3D-generation integrations are optional conveniences, not requirements for Blender MCP. They may require network access, accounts, API access, or separate service terms. Downloading an asset through an integration does not automatically settle its licensing or commercial-use requirements.
Likewise, an AI-generated model may look useful while still needing retopology, UV work, texture cleanup, rigging, or provenance review. MCP automates access to tools; it does not guarantee the legal, technical, or artistic quality of external content.
Who should use Blender MCP?
It is a good fit for Blender hobbyists, technical artists, developers prototyping procedural workflows, and users who enjoy iterative experimentation through natural language. It can be particularly useful for repeatable scene setup, batch operations, simple environment construction, and turning structured instructions into Blender API calls.
It is a poor fit if you expect one prompt to produce a finished production asset, are unwilling to review generated code, work directly in irreplaceable files, or need strict reproducibility without pinning software versions. Teams with valuable production data should favor narrow tools, checkpoints, controlled environments, and documented versioning over maximum tool count.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Alternatives to a live MCP bridge
If the risks or setup are not worthwhile, use Blender’s native Python API manually. Versioned scripts provide maximum control and are easier to audit. An AI coding assistant can also generate scripts for review without receiving a persistent connection to the current Blender session.
For users who do want conversational control, a constrained MCP server with checkpoints, tool whitelists, scene diffs, and viewport feedback may be a better choice than a project exposing unrestricted Python. Claude users should also compare the current Anthropic connector documentation with community projects before choosing a setup.
