A medieval scroll is a manuscript made to be read by unrolling a long sheet or joined set of sheets, rather than by turning the leaves of a codex. Scrolls were one format within medieval book culture—not a single kind of object with one purpose. For an art-minded reader, they offer a way to explore how text, image, materials, and the physical act of reading could meet on a continuous surface.

What makes a manuscript a scroll?
A scroll is a long writing surface that is rolled for storage and unrolled for reading. A codex, by contrast, is made of leaves bound along one edge. The distinction is about format: the word “medieval manuscript” does not automatically mean “scroll.” Collections also hold codices, fragments, and unbound documents, as Penn Libraries’ description of its medieval and early modern holdings makes clear.
“Medieval scroll” also does not identify one standardized object. Scrolls varied by place, language, date, purpose, and appearance. Harvard’s Medieval Scrolls Digital Archive is a focused resource for known Western literary scrolls, not a catalogue of every regional, religious, administrative, or documentary scroll tradition.

What were medieval scrolls used for?
There is no single use that defines every medieval scroll. The surviving examples and institutional resources need to be considered in their particular contexts: a scroll’s text, setting, and intended use matter as much as its format. Harvard’s archive provides a database and bibliography for Western literary scrolls, along with a free course on making and using scrolls in the European Middle Ages.
That focus is useful, but it should not be mistaken for a complete account of scroll use around the medieval world. Penn Libraries’ broader collection description is a reminder that manuscripts survive in several formats, and that a scroll is only one way medieval texts and documents were made.

How to look at a medieval scroll as an artwork
Notice the continuous surface
Unlike a codex page, a scroll unfolds horizontally or vertically as the reader moves through it. When viewing a digitized scroll, look for how the text and any images relate across the surface, and whether the available image shows one section or a larger extent. A screen image may not convey the object’s full length or the sequence in which it would have been unrolled.
Separate visible evidence from assumptions
Colour, lettering, decoration, and the support can all be part of a manuscript’s visual character. But material descriptions should be tied to the particular object: Nationalmuseum discusses pigments and animal-skin parchment in connection with its illuminated manuscript project, not as a universal description of medieval scrolls. A collection-level statement about illuminated manuscripts or fragments should not be recast as a claim about all scrolls.

Keep format and decoration distinct
“Scroll” describes how a manuscript is constructed and read; “illuminated” describes a decorated manuscript tradition. The terms answer different questions, and one does not establish the other. An institution’s illuminated manuscript collection can be valuable for studying medieval image-making without being evidence that every object in it is a scroll.
Where to explore medieval scrolls online
- Harvard Medieval Scrolls Digital Archive: a database, bibliography, links, and free course focused on known Western literary scrolls. Its course and exhibition materials include digitized views of scrolls from Harvard’s Houghton Library; the archive says the exhibition was held in Spring 2014.
- Penn Libraries, Kislak Center: a collection description that places scrolls alongside codices, fragments, and unbound documents, with information about digital access.
- British Library digitized manuscripts and archives: a guide to digital manuscript and archival discovery across multiple regions, including a catalogue search route. Availability of individual digitized items can change; the guide notes that some items may be unavailable following a cyber-attack.
When comparing objects found through these collections, record what the catalogue actually establishes: format, region or language, approximate date, text or function, and any described materials. If a detail is absent, leave it open rather than inferring it from another manuscript.

Materials and care
There is no single materials recipe for medieval scrolls established by these collection descriptions. Nationalmuseum’s account of parchment and pigments concerns its illuminated manuscript project and should not be generalized to all scrolls. Historical manuscripts are vulnerable objects; do not handle or attempt to restore one based on general online advice. For an object-specific question, contact the institution that holds it or a qualified conservator.
