Jenny Doan is the quilter and teacher at the heart of Missouri Star Quilt Co., the family business that grew from a small Hamilton, Missouri, quilting shop into an online destination for fabric, quilting services and free tutorials. The company credits those tutorials—and Jenny’s approachable lessons using precut fabric—with helping its business take off.
How Jenny Doan and her family started Missouri Star
Missouri Star’s account places the company’s beginning in Hamilton in November 2008. The Doan family bought a building for Jenny’s first longarm quilting machine. At first, the business offered longarm quilting services and a small selection of quilting supplies.

As the family developed the business, Jenny’s son Alan and his friend David concentrated on its online operation, while Jenny and her daughter Sarah helped run the shop. Missouri Star says the family later moved the shop online, widening its reach beyond Hamilton.
Jenny’s first quilting tutorial
Missouri Star says its website and first YouTube tutorial launched in February 2009. In a March 8, 2021 recollection, Jenny described that first lesson: a simple four-patch quilt block made with a jelly roll, a coordinated bundle of fabric strips.

The format connected a practical project with an easy-to-follow demonstration. Missouri Star credits free online quilting tutorials with helping the business grow, and Jenny has used precut fabrics as building blocks in her lessons. A jelly roll is one example, not a requirement for learning to quilt.
What is Missouri Star Quilt Co. today?
Missouri Star presents Hamilton as “Quilt Town, USA,” with themed quilt shops, workshops, live events, retreats, online tutorials, fabric and tools, and machine quilting services. The company’s welcome page describes 13 themed shops in Hamilton, while its timeline separately reports three new Hamilton stores in 2026. Those statements come from different company pages, so they should not be combined into a new shop total.

The company timeline also reports that its YouTube channel reached one million subscribers in 2026. That is a Missouri Star-reported milestone, not an independently verified audience count. The same timeline says Jenny released How to Stitch an American Dream during 2020–2022; a current retail listing is not established here.
How to start quilting with Jenny’s beginner resources
You can begin at home with free tutorials; you do not need to visit Hamilton or buy from Missouri Star. Its beginner guide lists a pattern, fabric, pins, quilting thread, sewing needles, fabric scissors and/or a rotary cutter, a self-healing cutting mat, and a sewing machine as basic supplies.

- Choose a simple project: A four-patch block is the kind of straightforward starting point Jenny used in her first tutorial.
- Select fabric: A jelly roll precut quilting fabric bundle is one practical option for a strip-based project. Precuts are coordinated fabric pieces cut into standard shapes and sizes.
- Prepare cutting tools: A rotary cutter and self-healing cutting mat are useful categories of tools listed by the beginner guide. The cited guidance does not specify a particular brand or model.
- Follow a tutorial and pattern: Use the lesson to understand the steps, and the pattern to guide measurements and construction.
Missouri Star’s beginner page also asks “Is Quilting Easy To Learn?”, “Can I Teach Myself to Quilt?”, and “So, How Do I Start Quilting?” Its free tutorials offer one route to self-guided learning; the listed supplies provide a practical starting checklist.
Learn online or visit Hamilton?

The available company descriptions do not establish comparable prices, course formats or independent quality measures for online learning and in-person visits.

Missouri Star’s company timeline says Jenny and Ron left for a two-year LDS mission in Ghana in 2024 and returned to Hamilton in 2026. The timeline does not establish exact departure or return dates.
