The Mental Health Commission office in Perth used a bespoke ceiling assembly from CSR Himmel: Imprint Acoustics Timber Wedge Panels and Imprint Acoustics Timber Lay In Slotted Panels suspended in a black steel grid. The ceiling was designed as a visual centrepiece for a refurbished, dual-level workplace shared by the Commission and several Western Australian mental-health and alcohol-and-other-drug organisations.

CSR Himmel’s project account links the ceiling to an agile workplace concept developed with HASSELL. That concept organised the interior around activity and movement, choice and control, identity and expression, and environment. Natural products, varied light sources and biophilic references were part of the stated design approach. The available project material describes design intent, not measured wellbeing or acoustic results.

What ceiling system was installed?

The named system was not a standard off-the-shelf tile ceiling. CSR Himmel reports supplying two custom Imprint Acoustics products together with a black steel grid:

  • Imprint Acoustics Timber Wedge Panels
  • Imprint Acoustics Timber Lay In Slotted Panels
  • Black steel suspension grid

That combination matters because the project used more than one timber panel expression. The wedge panels provide the system’s defining three-dimensional profile, while the lay-in slotted panels are a separate panel type installed in the same grid-based ceiling language. The case study calls the result a custom centrepiece rather than identifying it as a repeatable catalogue layout.

What does timber wedge ceiling mean?

A timber wedge ceiling is a ceiling made from timber-faced or timber-built panels whose visible profile includes wedge-like angled relief. In a suspended commercial ceiling, those panels sit within a supporting grid or a related carrier system. The wedge description identifies the panel geometry; it does not, by itself, establish a particular timber species, panel thickness, spacing, acoustic rating or fire classification.

For this Perth installation, the available documentation names the wedge product but does not publish drawings or dimensions showing the wedge angle, module size, edge detail or exact pattern. It is therefore accurate to describe the ceiling as a custom timber wedge-panel assembly, but not to assign a precise visual or technical specification that the project sources do not provide.

What does lay-in slotted mean here?

A lay-in panel is generally intended to rest within a suspended ceiling grid so that panels can be removed from below for access. The word slotted describes openings or grooves in the panel face. In this project, CSR Himmel identifies Timber Lay In Slotted Panels as part of the supplied system, but does not state the slot width, slot pattern, perforation percentage, backing layer or certified acoustic performance.

The product family name includes the word Acoustics. That name should not be treated as a project-specific performance claim: no noise-reduction coefficient, reverberation-time result, laboratory report or field measurement is published in the available material.

Where was the ceiling used?

The project was a newly refurbished dual-level facility in Perth, Western Australia. The premises brought several organisations together:

  • Mental Health Commission
  • Western Australian Association for Mental Health (WAAMH)
  • Western Australian Network of Alcohol & Other Drug Agencies (WANADA)
  • Local Drug Action Groups (LDAG)
  • Office of the Chief Psychiatrist (OCP)

This shared occupancy gives the ceiling a different brief from a single-tenant decorative office. The interior had to support a group of related organisations while allowing each workplace community to retain a sense of identity. CSR Himmel presents the ceiling as one part of that broader workplace response.

The reviewed project sources do not state the street address, completion or opening date, floor areas, number of occupants or the rooms in which each panel type was installed. They also do not identify a separate public-facing area, boardroom, circulation zone or staff area as the location of the wedge panels. Those details should be confirmed from project drawings before being used in a specification or case study.

How did the workplace concept shape the ceiling?

CSR Himmel attributes the design framework to HASSELL’s investigation of workplace wellness and describes four interlinked components. They are best understood as design intentions that informed planning and material choices, not as four independently tested outcomes.

Activity and movement

The agile workplace approach treated movement as part of the working day rather than assuming that every task happened at one fixed desk. A ceiling can reinforce that idea by giving circulation routes, shared areas and work settings a continuous visual language. The Perth case study does not publish a reflected ceiling plan, so it cannot establish whether wedge panels marked particular pathways or were distributed uniformly across both levels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What can be said is that the ceiling was conceived in relation to an agile workplace, where people may move between different settings. The custom panel combination allowed the ceiling to be considered as part of that spatial choreography instead of as a purely technical finish.

Choice and control

Choice and control refer to the ability of people to select settings that suit different tasks, levels of collaboration or degrees of concentration. Ceiling design can support that principle by helping distinguish zones, controlling visual character and coordinating lighting and services without making every area identical.

No source specifies the lighting controls, zoning strategy, services coordination or user controls used in this fit-out. The evidence supports a relationship between the ceiling concept and the stated workplace principle, but not a claim that occupants could adjust the ceiling, lighting or acoustics themselves.

Identity and expression

A shared facility can use material and form to create a recognisable identity while accommodating several organisations. The timber wedge and slotted panels gave the ceiling a distinctive expression, and the black grid provided a consistent structural frame across the installation.

CSR Himmel describes the ceiling as a custom centrepiece. That wording indicates an intentional visual role: the ceiling was meant to be noticed as part of the interior’s identity, not hidden as a neutral service plane. The available sources do not document logos, colour coding, branded zones or organisation-specific motifs, so those should not be inferred.

Environment

The environment component connected the workplace to material, light and the qualities of the interior setting. CSR Himmel specifically identifies natural products, varied light sources and biophilic references as considerations in the design approach. Timber contributes a natural material presence, while a varied ceiling profile can add visual texture to an otherwise flat plane.

These are design considerations, not proof of a measurable health benefit. The project material contains no post-occupancy survey, indoor-environment dataset, productivity study or clinical evidence showing that the ceiling changed mental-health outcomes.

Why combine wedge and slotted timber panels?

The documented assembly suggests a deliberate contrast between two panel treatments. Wedge panels introduce angled relief, while slotted lay-in panels offer a more regular modular surface. Used within one black grid, those products could create variation while retaining a coordinated ceiling system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

However, the project sources do not show enough detail to say exactly how the products were composed. They do not establish whether the wedge panels formed a central band, a feature island, a repeating field, a transition between rooms or a treatment around lighting. Photographs in the 2017 NATSPEC brochure corroborate the project and installation context, but they do not substitute for construction drawings or a current technical schedule.

How to specify a similar timber ceiling

A project team considering a comparable ceiling should treat the Perth installation as a design reference, not as a complete specification. The following sequence keeps the aesthetic ambition separate from the technical information that must be verified.

  1. Define the spatial role. Decide whether the timber feature is intended for a reception, circulation spine, collaboration area, workplace neighbourhood or an entire floor. Record where a change in ceiling expression is required and why.
  2. Set the panel geometry. Obtain drawings showing wedge angle, panel module, thickness, joint treatment, slot dimensions and the relationship between wedge and slotted panels. Do not rely on a product name to communicate those values.
  3. Coordinate the grid. Confirm the black grid module, suspension points, perimeter trims, access strategy and tolerances. Coordinate the grid with luminaires, air terminals, sprinklers, detectors, speakers and cable pathways before ordering panels.
  4. Request verified performance data. Ask for acoustic test reports, fire and smoke documentation, reaction-to-fire classification, structural or seismic requirements and any limitations on panel span or service loads. A product-family name is not a substitute for project-specific compliance evidence.
  5. Resolve material provenance. If local manufacture, timber species or environmental certification is important, require written documentation identifying the manufacturing location, timber source, coatings and chain-of-custody status. The Perth case study does not supply those details.
  6. Plan access and maintenance. Confirm which panels are removable, how often services need access, how replacement panels will be matched and what cleaning methods are permitted for the finish.
  7. Mock up the visual effect. Review a full-size sample or room mock-up under the planned lighting. Wedge relief, slot shadows and the black grid can look different in daylight, artificial light and wide-angle photographs.
  8. Document occupant objectives separately. If the project claims benefits related to choice, movement or wellbeing, define the intended user behaviours and the method for evaluating them after occupation. Do not present design intent as measured evidence.

How should it be compared with other ceiling systems?

The available project material documents one bespoke installation rather than a head-to-head product comparison. A responsible comparison should therefore use the same criteria for every candidate system and leave unsupported cells open.

Comparison criterion Questions to ask Evidence required
Acoustic performance How much absorption is required, at which frequencies and in which room types? Independent laboratory reports and, where relevant, field measurements.
Panel geometry and finish Can the system reproduce the required wedge relief, slot pattern, colour and joint rhythm? Shop drawings, samples and approved finish schedules.
Lighting and services integration How are fixtures, air terminals, sprinklers and access points coordinated? Reflected ceiling plans, coordination drawings and installation details.
Suspension and compliance What grid, hanger, perimeter and seismic provisions are required? System technical literature, engineering details and local code documentation.
Maintenance Which panels can be removed, cleaned or replaced, and can future batches match? Maintenance instructions, spare-panel policy and access schedule.
Cost and programme What are the panel, grid, fabrication, installation and lead-time allowances? Project quotations dated for the specific location and scope.

This framework prevents a visually distinctive ceiling from being selected on appearance alone. It also avoids assigning the Perth system a performance rating that its published case study does not provide.

What does the NATSPEC record add?

The 2017 NATSPEC practice product brochure independently repeats the product installation and project context and includes project imagery. It is useful historical corroboration that the named panel system and Perth office project were documented together at that time.

NATSPEC’s brochure should not be read as proof of current availability, unchanged product construction or present-day technical compliance. A current project should obtain the latest documentation directly from the supplier and have the design team verify regional code requirements.

Why the ceiling remains notable

The significance of the Perth installation lies in the way a custom ceiling was used to carry a workplace idea. Rather than treating the ceiling as an invisible service zone, the project made timber relief, slotted panels and a black grid part of the shared facility’s identity. The material palette supported the stated interest in natural products, while the varied panel language aligned with an agile workplace organised around movement, choice, identity and environment.

That is a design reading, not a claim that the ceiling alone produced healthier work or better acoustics. Its documented contribution is more precise: CSR Himmel supplied a custom timber panel assembly for a refurbished dual-level office, and the supplier presents that assembly as a centrepiece within HASSELL’s broader workplace concept.
