“Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2025” was a greeting for the holiday season at the end of 2024, wishing someone well for Christmas and the upcoming year. Since 2025 has passed, this guide treats the phrase as a retrospective and offers wording examples for messages referring to that season.
What “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2025” meant
The year depends on when the greeting was written. In December 2024, people and organizations used “2025” to mean the New Year they were about to welcome. A parish bulletin dated December 2024 used the exact greeting while thanking readers for their support, good wishes, cards and gifts (The Catholic Parish of St. William of York, December 2024 bulletin). HRDLIČKA likewise addressed its partners in a December 20, 2024 message and wished them all the best for New Year 2025 (HRDLIČKA, “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2025”).
By December 2025, the same wording could instead appear as a published title while the writer looked ahead to 2026. BPS-Statistics Banjarmasin Municipality published a Christmas greeting on December 25, 2025 that referred to hopes for 2026 (BPS-Statistics Banjarmasin Municipality, “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2025”). So the title alone does not establish which holiday season a message refers to; its publication date and surrounding text do.

For a business or community message, address the audience and make the sentiment fit the relationship:
- “To our partners, thank you for your support this year. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and every success in 2025.”
- “Merry Christmas to our parish community. Thank you for your generosity and good wishes; may the New Year bring you peace and joy.”
Organizations have used the greeting in parish, business and municipal settings. The Pontiac Journal’s December 17, 2025 issue includes a page of municipal seasonal messages, one using the exact 2025 wording (Pontiac Journal, December 17, 2025 issue). That later publication is evidence of the phrase’s continued use as a printed greeting, not proof that it refers to the coming year 2025.

Choosing a printed card or digital message
A physical Christmas card is a natural format when you want to send a personal note, and the parish bulletin’s thanks for cards and gifts reflects that familiar use. A digital message is practical when timing or distance makes a printed card inconvenient. Choose based on the recipient’s preference and whether the message can arrive in time.
- Choose a printed card if a handwritten note or keepsake matters and there is enough time for delivery.
- Choose a digital message if you need to send it quickly or the recipient is far away.
- Personalize either format with the recipient’s name and a specific thank-you or wish rather than relying only on a generic greeting.
A dated 2025 design may work as a keepsake of that season, but it is not a sensible default for a current holiday purchase. A 2025 calendar plaque with a Christmas and New Year greeting appeared as a product example; its present availability is not established (Zazzle, “2025 Calendar Corporate Photo Christmas New Year Plaque”).

When to update the year
For a message being sent now, use the year that matches the New Year the recipient is about to celebrate—or omit the year if there is any chance the message will be reused. The unnumbered version, “Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year,” stays clear across seasons. Christmas is observed on December 25, as described by BPS-Statistics Banjarmasin Municipality in its December 25, 2025 greeting.
