On February 22, 2022, Meta launched I Am A Man, a limited-time Horizon Worlds experience by Los Angeles artist and VR creator Gabe Gault. It was the first installment of Meta’s Metaverse Culture Series, a program intended to bring historically underrepresented cultural stories into social virtual reality.
The exhibit was available only to people aged 18 and over in the United States and Canada, from February 22 through February 28, 2022, between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. Pacific Time. Meta’s announcement does not establish that the world remains accessible in 2026.

The announcement covered two related but distinct initiatives:

- I Am A Man: a three-dimensional Horizon Worlds environment inspired by 1960s Memphis and Black freedom-struggle history.
- Black Future: a Horizon Workrooms conversation about Black culture, creativity and immersive technology.
They were part of one cultural-programming launch, but Black Future was a discussion, not a second virtual exhibit. Meta described the series as an ongoing effort tied to cultural moments throughout the year, with proposed themes including women in VR around International Women’s Day, Ramadan, Earth Day and Pride. Those were announced plans, not evidence that every later installment occurred.
Inside “I Am A Man”
Meta described Gault’s work as an immersive environment loosely based on 1960s Memphis. Visitors encountered protestors carrying “I Am A Man” signs, vintage storefronts and a representation of the Lorraine Motel. The environment also referenced Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and the Tuskegee Airmen, alongside broader tributes to Black historical figures and movements. Meta’s original description is available in its February 2022 announcement.
The phrase “I Am a Man” is strongly associated with the 1968 Memphis sanitation workers’ strike. Black sanitation workers used the slogan to assert their dignity and demand recognition during a labor action that followed dangerous working conditions and unequal treatment. In Gault’s project, that history became an artistic, navigable setting rather than a documentary reconstruction or an accredited museum collection.

Gault said the point of a three-dimensional environment was to let people inhabit a historical scene instead of encountering it only through photographs or written accounts. That is his creative and educational rationale, not a measured finding that VR produces better historical learning. A virtual interpretation can create presence and emotional scale, but it also raises questions about which sources shaped the environment, whose perspective controls the narrative and whether visitors receive citations or explanatory material.
Who created it?
Meta identified Gabe Gault as the series’ first Artist and VR Creator in Residence. The company described him as a Los Angeles-based artist, muralist and 3D sculptor who combines classical painting methods with contemporary media.
The available announcement names Gault as the creator and artist but does not provide a complete production-credit list. It therefore supports calling him the project’s creator and lead artistic figure, not assuming he was the sole designer, historian or technical producer.

How people could access it
The original access terms were specific:

These were the conditions for this event, not a universal statement about every Horizon Worlds experience. Meta’s announcement does not provide a complete device-compatibility matrix, so it would be inaccurate to claim that every Quest headset, desktop user, mobile user or non-Meta VR device could enter.
Most importantly, buying a current headset does not restore access to the original exhibit. Meta documented a one-week run in 2022, and there is no evidence in the supplied announcement that I Am A Man remains publicly available in 2026. Treat it as archived or unavailable unless a current Horizon Worlds listing or Meta statement says otherwise.
What “Black Future” added
The companion Black Future session used Horizon Workrooms to discuss how immersive platforms might support Black culture and creativity. Participants listed by Meta included Ime Archibong, Jay Ellis, Gabe Gault, moderator and journalist Danielle Young, Paris McCoy, Rashaad Lambert, Philip Lewis and Vivian Ewalefo Johnson.

This programming mattered because it placed creator and community discussion alongside the visual experience. It was still a corporate event, however, rather than an independent historical review or a second exhibit.

I Am A Man showed how Meta wanted Horizon Worlds to be understood: not only as a place for games and casual socializing, but also as a venue for cultural storytelling. The project connected a major technology company’s metaverse strategy with Black History Month and gave a Black artist a prominent role in shaping the experience.

That proposition has limits. A short-run virtual world can offer spatial exploration that a flat image cannot, while still being constrained by headset cost, broadband, motion comfort, disability access, moderation and the company’s own platform policies.

Contemporary reporting put Horizon Worlds at about 300,000 users in February 2022, according to The Verge. That is a dated figure, not a current audience measurement. Nor does it show how many eligible users visited this particular world.
Limitations that shaped the experience
- Reach: The United States-and-Canada restriction and 18-plus rule excluded much of the global audience and younger learners.
- Hardware and access: Visitors needed access to Horizon Worlds and compatible VR equipment or access methods available at the time. The announcement did not promise a non-VR alternative.
- Accessibility: Headset weight, motion effects, visual or audio demands, disability access and broadband quality can all affect participation. Meta acknowledged accessibility and equity as wider metaverse challenges but supplied no audit or user-research results for this exhibit.
- Moderation: Social VR raises legitimate safety and harassment concerns. Those concerns provide context, but the available reporting does not document a specific abuse or security incident inside I Am A Man.
- Interpretive authority: A company-sponsored artistic environment is not equivalent to an archive, museum collection or scholarly account. Readers should ask what historical sources and advisers informed it and whether community organizations or historians reviewed the work.
- Durability: A one-week run limits the project’s educational reach and makes preservation, replay and independent study difficult.
What happened after the launch?
Meta’s February 2022 announcement confirms the original exhibition window and the proposed broader series. It does not prove that the series became a permanent product line, that every promised theme appeared, or that the original world remains online. As of 2026, describe I Am A Man as a historical, limited-time Horizon Worlds project unless current evidence shows otherwise.
For readers interested in present-day Meta VR, the company’s Quest product page and official comparison page describe current hardware. Neither page should be read as a promise that a current headset can access this discontinued 2022 exhibit.

Bottom line
I Am A Man was a significant early example of a major technology company using social VR for Black-history storytelling. Gabe Gault’s virtual Memphis combined protest imagery, memorial references and an argument for experiencing history spatially. Its significance should not be overstated: the exhibit was an artistic interpretation, available for only one week to adults in two countries, and its present-day availability is unverified. The launch is best understood as a snapshot of Meta’s 2022 metaverse ambitions—not as a current attraction or proof that the wider cultural series continued unchanged.
