Michael Pawlyn’s work does not prove that biomimicry is a single solution for future buildings, but it does show how nature can generate practical design strategies. His projects translate geodesic geometry, soap-bubble behavior, plant growth, closed-loop resource ideas and ecosystem relationships into architectural decisions. The Eden Project’s Biomes and Core provide built examples; the Sahara Forest Project shows how the same thinking can extend beyond a single building.
The useful question is therefore not whether a building looks organic. It is whether a biological principle helps solve a defined problem—such as spanning a difficult site, reducing material demand, managing water, controlling heat or integrating a building with its ecosystem—and whether project-level evidence confirms that it works.

What Pawlyn’s work contributes to the future-building debate
Michael Pawlyn is an architect and the founder of Exploration Architecture, established in 2007 to focus on biomimicry and environmentally sustainable projects. Before that, he worked with Grimshaw and was part of the design team for the Eden Project in Cornwall. His practice and public writing frame nature as a source of tested strategies rather than a catalogue of decorative forms.
That distinction matters. A building with a leaf-shaped roof is not automatically efficient, and a facade covered in greenery is not automatically regenerative. Biomimicry is useful when a designer identifies what a natural system does, abstracts the underlying rule and adapts that rule to a site, climate, programme and available technology.

Pawlyn’s Biomimicry in Architecture, third edition (ISBN 9781915722683), organizes this approach around structures, materials, water, thermal environment, light, energy, ecosystem alignment and architectural practice. Those categories are a practical map for evaluating his work: each example should be judged by the problem it addresses, the biological process it borrows and the evidence available for its results.
Biomimicry in architecture: a method, not a visual style
Eden Project describes biomimicry as borrowing designs and systems from nature to create technology. In architecture, that can happen at several levels:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Form: a geometry such as a geodesic lattice or a spiral.
- Process: a way of growing, assembling or adapting, rather than a finished shape.
- Material: a substance or manufacturing principle that uses fewer resources or can be safely cycled.
- System: relationships among water, energy, organisms and waste that resemble an ecosystem.
- Performance: a measurable behavior, such as responding to changing loads, light or temperature.
The design process usually begins with a building problem, not a biological image. A team might ask how to span unstable ground, keep a large volume within a tolerable temperature range, supply water in an arid landscape or reduce construction waste. Researchers then look for natural systems that solve an analogous problem, extract the transferable principle and test whether it remains appropriate when translated into human materials and regulations.
Eden Project Biomes: geometry responding to a changing site
The Eden Project’s Rainforest and Mediterranean Biomes are joined domes designed by Grimshaw. Their geometry began with the geodesic system associated with Buckminster Fuller. The team also considered soap bubbles, whose surfaces adapt to boundaries while using a minimal film. That analogy helped the designers think about a former clay-pit landscape whose surfaces and edges changed across the site.

The result is not a literal bubble or a claim that soap-bubble geometry guarantees low impact. It is an example of using a natural behavior—adapting a surface to constraints—to guide a structural and spatial response.
| Documented feature | What it describes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Mediterranean Biome: about 6,540 m² and 30 m high | The approximate area and height stated by Eden Project | An energy, carbon or cost saving |
| About 2,000 rock anchors, each 11 m long | Construction used to stabilize the clay-pit sides | Proof that the biomimetic geometry reduced total resource use |
| Geodesic dome system and soap-bubble analogy | Design references used to address the site and enclosure | A universal solution for every climate or building type |
Tim Smit, Eden co-founder, described the initial Biome model this way: “The moment we saw it we loved it, because it felt natural – a biological response to our needs, but forged in materials that would allow us to explore the cultivation of plants in a way never before attempted”. The quotation captures the project’s ambition: a natural analogy was valuable because it supported a new architectural purpose, not because natural appearance was an end in itself.

Eden says architect Jolyon Brewis based the Core building on plant growth, using opposing spirals mathematically related to the Fibonacci sequence. The pattern is a design generator for the building’s organization and expression; it should not be read as evidence that Fibonacci geometry alone improves performance.
The Core brief included fitness for purpose, future-proofing, responsibly sourced materials, energy efficiency and minimal construction waste. Eden lists several resulting choices:

- super-insulated walls using recycled newspaper;
- flooring originally made from Heineken bottles;
- photovoltaic panels;
- FSC-certified red spruce beams.
These details show how a biomimetic concept can sit alongside conventional environmental design decisions. Plant-inspired geometry addresses form and organization, while insulation, material reuse, certified timber and solar generation address envelope, sourcing and energy. Eden documents the choices but does not provide, on the cited page, a consistent set of quantified savings against a conventional reference building. The responsible conclusion is that the Core demonstrates an integrated design brief, not a proven percentage reduction that can be copied to every project.
The Sahara Forest Project: from building to productive landscape
Pawlyn jointly initiated the Sahara Forest Project. Exploration Architecture’s profile says the practice provided architectural services for its Qatar pilot, and Pawlyn’s biography records that the latest version was opened by Jordan’s King in 2017. The concept combines elements such as seawater, solar energy, sheltered growing conditions and vegetation to explore food production and restoration in arid environments.
This example broadens the scale of biomimicry. Instead of treating a building as an isolated object, the project considers exchanges among water, heat, crops, energy and surrounding ecology. That is closer to ecosystem thinking than to copying a single organism.
The 2017 opening is historical project information. It should not be treated as evidence of the pilot’s current operating status, output, commercial scale or long-term viability without current operational data. The lesson for designers is methodological: a landscape system must be assessed through water balances, energy flows, maintenance requirements, local climate and social use, not through its conceptual elegance alone.

Which building problems can nature-inspired strategies address?
Pawlyn’s examples become more useful when separated by the problem being solved. The following framework keeps a biological analogy from being mistaken for a performance claim.
| Building challenge | Biological or natural reference | Possible architectural translation | Evidence available in the documented examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spanning or enclosing difficult ground | Geodesic networks and soap-bubble surfaces | Lightweight, adaptable domes and lattices shaped around site constraints | Eden documents the Biomes’ geometry, site response and stabilizing anchors; no general comparative efficiency dataset is provided. |
| Material selection and waste | Nature’s use of materials within cycles | Recycled inputs, responsibly sourced timber and design for long service life | Eden lists recycled-newspaper insulation, reused bottle flooring and FSC-certified spruce beams; quantified lifecycle results are not stated. |
| Water and food production | Interdependent ecosystem flows | Systems that connect seawater, cultivation, energy and vegetation | The Sahara Forest Project documents a pilot concept and project history; current output and operating data are not established here. |
| Thermal comfort and energy | Natural adaptation to climate and resource limits | Passive enclosure, solar generation and climate-specific systems | Pawlyn’s book treats thermal control and energy as design topics; the cited project descriptions do not provide a common measured comparison. |
| Light and spatial organization | Plant growth and spiral patterns | Circulation, structure or daylight strategies derived from growth geometry | Eden attributes the Core’s opposing spirals to plant growth and Fibonacci mathematics; no isolated performance result is supplied. |
How to apply the approach to a new building
A project team can use Pawlyn’s method without forcing a biological metaphor into the design. The sequence below keeps the work tied to decisions that can be checked.
- Define the real constraint. State whether the priority is structural span, overheating, water scarcity, embodied material, daylight, biodiversity or another measurable need. Include the site, climate, programme and regulatory limits.
- Set a conventional baseline. Record how a standard solution would normally meet the requirement. Without a baseline, a nature-inspired option cannot demonstrate improvement.
- Search for functional analogies. Look for organisms, ecosystems or physical processes that solve a similar problem. Ask what the system does—distributes load, sheds water, exchanges heat or cycles nutrients—rather than copying its appearance.
- Abstract the rule. Reduce the reference to a transferable principle, such as branching distribution, variable porosity, modular growth or closed-loop exchange. Document assumptions so the analogy can be challenged.
- Translate into buildable systems. Test structure, materials, fire safety, durability, maintenance, procurement and construction sequencing. A biological principle must survive engineering and planning requirements.
- Model and measure. Compare options using the same weather files, occupancy assumptions, service life, maintenance boundary and cost basis. Test energy, water, carbon, comfort and waste where they are relevant.
- Monitor after completion. Verify whether the building behaves as predicted. Publish operational results with dates and boundaries so later projects can distinguish a promising idea from a repeatable solution.
What the documented evidence can—and cannot—support
The available material establishes Pawlyn’s biography, the stated design intentions of the Eden projects, selected construction features, the Sahara Forest Project’s development history and the scope of his book. It does not constitute an independent lifecycle assessment or a comparative study of buildings.
Accordingly, it is sound to say that the Biomes use geodesic geometry and a soap-bubble analogy, that the Core incorporates the listed materials and photovoltaic panels, and that Pawlyn has pursued ecosystem-scale ideas. It is not sound to claim, on these descriptions alone, that biomimicry invariably cuts emissions, construction cost, operating energy or resource consumption.

Performance is also context-dependent. A geometry that helps on a clay-pit site may be inappropriate on a seismic site or in a different wind regime. Recycled material can have different benefits depending on transport, processing and service life. Photovoltaics produce different yields according to orientation, shading, weather and maintenance. An ecosystem-inspired water system can fail if its local water chemistry, governance or operating skills are ignored.
Does biomimicry hold the key to future buildings?
It is better understood as one of several keys. Future buildings need structural engineering, building physics, low-carbon materials, reliable operations, adaptable planning and social acceptance as well as biological insight. Biomimicry can improve the questions designers ask and reveal options that a purely conventional catalogue might miss.

Pawlyn’s work is persuasive as a demonstration of design thinking: begin with a difficult condition, study how nature handles an analogous condition, and translate the principle into a tested architectural system. Eden shows that this can produce memorable, technically ambitious buildings. The Core shows that material and energy decisions can be combined with a growth-based concept. The Sahara Forest Project shows how the scope can expand from enclosure to landscape relationships.
Whether a particular proposal is better still depends on evidence. A credible claim should identify the reference case, system boundary, climate, time period, assumptions and measured outcome. Until those are available, “nature-inspired” describes the route to a design decision, not the result.
A decision checklist for clients and design teams
- What exact problem is the biological analogy solving?
- Is the reference a form, process, material, performance behavior or ecosystem relationship?
- What conventional baseline will be used for comparison?
- Which local climate, soil, water, ecological and cultural conditions could change the outcome?
- Can the proposed system be built, inspected, repaired and eventually dismantled?
- Are claims about energy, carbon, water or cost supported by project-specific measurements?
- Who will operate the system, and what happens when equipment or maintenance routines fail?
- Does the design remain useful if the biological analogy is removed from the presentation?
