Microsoft announced MAI-Image-1 on October 13, 2025, describing it as the company’s first image-generation model developed entirely in-house. It began appearing in selected Microsoft products on November 4, 2025. The launch marked a move toward Microsoft-controlled image models, but it did not replace OpenAI technology: Bing Image Creator initially offered MAI-Image-1 alongside DALL-E 3 and GPT-4o.
MAI-Image-1 is now a historical milestone rather than Microsoft’s newest image model. MAI-Image-2, MAI-Image-2.5 and later updates followed in 2026.
What Microsoft actually launched
MAI-Image-1 was a text-to-image model built by Microsoft AI. “In-house” means Microsoft developed the underlying model itself, rather than merely operating a consumer interface connected to an external provider. That is different from Microsoft hosting another company’s model or placing several models behind one product such as Bing Image Creator.

Microsoft’s announcement is precise: MAI-Image-1 was its first image-generation model developed entirely in-house. It was not Microsoft’s first image product. Bing Image Creator existed earlier and used other models.

Microsoft announced the model on October 13, 2025, saying it debuted in the top 10 of LMArena’s text-to-image rankings.
Why the model mattered to Microsoft
Microsoft had already built major consumer AI products around OpenAI models. Developing MAI-Image-1 gave Microsoft more control over model behavior, deployment and product choices, while preserving the ability to offer several providers in the same experience.
The Bing model menu illustrated coexistence, not an OpenAI withdrawal: Microsoft listed MAI-Image-1 alongside DALL-E 3 and GPT-4o. The launch therefore signaled greater model independence and choice, not the end of Microsoft’s OpenAI relationship.

What Microsoft said MAI-Image-1 was designed to do
Microsoft positioned the model for fast, iterative text-to-image work and highlighted the following goals:
- Photorealistic images with convincing lighting and bounce-light effects.
- Reflections and detailed landscapes.
- A broad range of visual styles rather than repetitive, generic-looking outputs.
- Faster generation and iteration than larger, slower models.
- Workflows informed by feedback from creative-industry professionals.
These are Microsoft’s stated capabilities and design goals, not independent test results. The “top 10” reference is a leaderboard claim attributed to Microsoft; a ranking can change as models and votes change and does not prove universal superiority in editing, typography, consistency, safety or licensing.

Bing Image Creator limits
The limits documented for Bing Image Creator apply to the service, not necessarily to MAI-Image-1 alone:
- 15 free fast creations per day.
- Microsoft Rewards points can be used for additional fast creations.
- Standard-speed creation remains available without consuming fast creations.
- Up to 200 prompts in a 24-hour period.
- Limits replenish the next day.
Those quotas are service rules and may change.
Generation is not the same as image editing
Bing’s documentation makes an important distinction. When a user uploads an image for editing, Bing does not let the user select DALL-E 3 or MAI-Image-1; that editing workflow is handled by GPT-4o. MAI-Image-1 was therefore a selectable generation model, not automatically the engine for every Bing Image Creator task.
MAI-Image-1 compared with Microsoft’s other image models
| Model | Era | Primary role described in the available sources |
|---|---|---|
| DALL-E 3 | Earlier Microsoft/OpenAI integration | Text-to-image generation |
| GPT-4o image workflow | Used in Bing editing workflows | Uploaded-image understanding and editing |
| MAI-Image-1 | Announced October 13, 2025 | Microsoft’s first fully in-house image model; primarily text-to-image at launch |
| MAI-Image-2 | Announced April 2, 2026 | Newer Microsoft model with faster generation and phased Bing, PowerPoint and Foundry availability |
| MAI-Image-2.5 | Announced June 2, 2026 | Newer family member supporting text-to-image and image-to-image editing |
What changed after the 2025 debut
- August 2025: Microsoft AI announced its first two in-house models, according to the MAI-Image-1 announcement.
- October 13, 2025: Microsoft announced MAI-Image-1.
- November 4, 2025: Microsoft announced its rollout to Bing Image Creator and Copilot Audio Expressions.
- April 2, 2026: Microsoft announced MAI-Image-2, with availability through Microsoft Foundry and MAI Playground and phased rollouts in Bing and PowerPoint. Microsoft said MAI-Image-2 generated images at least twice as fast in Foundry and Copilot, based on real-world production-traffic data.
- June 2, 2026: Microsoft announced MAI-Image-2.5 and an efficient Flash variant, describing text-to-image and editing capabilities.
- August 12, 2026: Microsoft’s Foundry blog published further MAI model availability information.
The later models should not be treated as evidence that MAI-Image-1 had the same editing features. The MAI-Image-2.5 model card describes image-to-image editing, object removal and replacement, attribute changes, inpainting, text updates, artifact cleanup, layout preservation and improved in-image text rendering for that newer model.

Who should use it?
Casual creators
MAI-Image-1 is a sensible option for people already using Bing who want low-friction text-to-image generation and the ability to compare Microsoft’s model with DALL-E 3 or GPT-4o. Fast quotas, standard-speed waits, changing availability and limited editing make it less suitable for high-volume production.
Developers
Do not assume that Bing access means MAI-Image-1 had a generally available public API. Microsoft Foundry announcements and pricing signals concern newer models. For example, Microsoft listed MAI-Image-2 at $5 per 1 million input tokens and $33 per 1 million image-output tokens; that is not verified pricing for MAI-Image-1.
Teams evaluating Microsoft’s platform should check current Foundry model availability, preview status, region, quotas, data handling and deployment terms at Microsoft Foundry.
Commercial and enterprise teams
Before using any Microsoft image model for production, verify commercial-use rights, treatment of uploaded data, regional availability, repeatability, typography, faces, hands, products and brand layouts. Consumer Bing terms and enterprise or API terms are not automatically identical. Foundry may be more appropriate where governance, monitoring and Azure integration matter.
Bottom line for 2026
Microsoft debuted MAI-Image-1 on October 13, 2025, and began rolling it into Bing Image Creator and Copilot on November 4. It was an important step toward Microsoft’s own model stack, but it coexisted with OpenAI models and was mainly a text-to-image generator at launch.
By August 2026, MAI-Image-1 was no longer Microsoft’s newest image model. Consumers can try it if Bing still exposes it in their region and account; users who need advanced editing, enterprise deployment or the latest capabilities should evaluate the newer MAI-Image-2 and MAI-Image-2.5 offerings instead.
