Microsoft is adding AI tools to both Windows Notepad and Paint, but they do different jobs: Notepad can draft, rewrite, and summarize text, while Paint can generate or edit images. The features do not all have the same requirements. Some depend on Copilot+ PC hardware, some use cloud services and AI credits, and several have rolled out through Windows Insider channels rather than appearing for every Windows 11 user at once.
What the AI tools do in each app
| App and feature | What it does | Key requirement or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Notepad: Rewrite | Reworks selected text for clarity, tone, or length. You can review three variations. | Cloud use requires Microsoft-account authentication and may use AI credits; local use is available on Copilot+ PCs under the conditions described below. |
| Notepad: Summarize | Condenses selected text into a short, medium, or long summary. | Same local-versus-cloud distinction as Rewrite. |
| Notepad: Write | Drafts new content from an instruction, optionally using selected text as reference. | Microsoft introduced the feature in an Insider update in May 2025. Availability depends on rollout and processing path. |
| Paint: Generative Fill | Adds a described object to a selected rectangular or free-form area while fitting it into the surrounding artwork. | Requires a Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PC. |
| Paint: Generative Erase | Removes unwanted objects brushed over in an image. | Microsoft announced it for Windows 11 PCs in November 2024, subject to rollout. |
| Paint: Cocreator | Combines your canvas drawing with a prompt to create an image; controls include art styles such as watercolor and oil painting. | Uses Paint’s AI image workflow; availability and requirements can vary by device and rollout. |
| Paint: Sticker generator | Creates a sticker from a text prompt, which you can add to the canvas, copy, or save. | For Copilot+ PCs. |
| Paint: Object Select | Detects an element in an image so you can isolate, move, copy, or erase it, or use it with Generative Fill. | Introduced through Insider updates; availability depends on rollout. |
| Paint: Coloring book | Generates a coloring-book page from a prompt for adding to the canvas, copying, or saving. | Described in a January 2026 Insider update and limited to Copilot+ PCs. |
What Notepad’s AI writing tools can do
Rewrite selected text
Select text in Notepad and choose Rewrite to request a different length or tone. Microsoft describes options including shorter, longer, casual, and professional. The app presents three generated variations to review rather than silently replacing the original.
Summarize a passage
Select the text to condense, choose Summarize, and pick a short, medium, or long result. You can regenerate alternatives and insert the one you want into the document.

Draft new content with Write
Choose where the text should go by placing the cursor or selecting reference text, then enter an instruction. Review the draft and keep or discard it. The feature was announced for Insiders in May 2025, so an announcement does not mean it is present in every installed version of Notepad.
What Paint’s image tools add
Generative Fill adds an object to a selected area
Make a rectangular or free-form selection, describe the object you want, and review the generated results. You can refine or regenerate them before keeping a result. Generative Fill is the Paint feature with the clearest hardware restriction: Microsoft says it requires a Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PC.

Cocreator turns prompts and sketches into images

Other Paint additions help with elements and starting points
- Sticker generator: enter a prompt such as “a cat wearing sunglasses,” then add, copy, or save the generated sticker. Microsoft identifies this as a Copilot+ PC feature.
- Object Select: let Paint detect an individual element so it can be separated for copying, moving, erasing, or use with Generative Fill.
- Coloring book: a January 2026 Insider update described prompt-generated coloring-book pages that can be added to the canvas, copied, or saved; Microsoft limited this feature to Copilot+ PCs in that announcement.
Do you need a Copilot+ PC, a Microsoft account, or a subscription?
There is no single requirement for every feature. Hardware eligibility, where the AI runs, and account or credit requirements vary by app and feature.
| Path | Hardware and processing | Account, internet, or credits |
|---|---|---|
| Notepad local AI | Microsoft said in a September 2025 Insider update that Copilot+ PCs can run Summarize, Write, and Rewrite locally. English was the supported language at that stage. | Microsoft said this local path required no subscription. |
| Notepad cloud AI | Uses cloud-backed AI rather than the local Copilot+ PC path. | Requires Microsoft-account authentication and can use AI credits. Microsoft Support says Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers receive 60 AI credits per month; its page describes Copilot Pro usage as extensive. The same support information lists China, Macao, and Russia as availability exceptions. |
| Paint Generative Fill | Requires a Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PC. | Paint’s supported AI image features use the computer’s NPU for generation, while Azure cloud services provide safety checks; Microsoft-account sign-in and an internet connection are required for those checks. |
Microsoft’s September 2025 statement about local Notepad processing is a dated description of that rollout, not a guarantee that every Copilot+ PC, language, or app version has the same options today. Likewise, Paint’s AI features do not share one universal device requirement: Generative Fill has a Snapdragon Copilot+ PC requirement, while Microsoft describes Generative Erase for Windows 11 PCs and identifies some other features specifically for Copilot+ PCs.

Why two Windows 11 PCs may show different AI menus
Microsoft has introduced these features through a mix of Insider channel updates, support documentation, and device-specific rollouts. Canary, Dev, Beta, and Release Preview builds have all been used for features described in Microsoft’s announcements. Access can also depend on the app version, Windows channel, country, language, account sign-in, and hardware. An announced feature may therefore be absent from a particular PC without indicating that the app is broken.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Check whether the device is a Copilot+ PC and, for Generative Fill, whether it has a Snapdragon processor.
- Check the installed Notepad or Paint version and whether Windows is enrolled in an Insider channel.
- For cloud-backed Notepad functions and Paint safety checks, confirm Microsoft-account sign-in and internet access.
- For Notepad, check the selected processing path and supported language; the September 2025 local-model announcement specified English.
Which app should you use?
Use Notepad when the task is to create or refine words: drafting, changing tone or length, or condensing a passage. Use Paint when the task is visual: adding an object to an image, removing an unwanted element, generating art from a prompt and sketch, or making a sticker. A Copilot+ PC can enable local Notepad processing and specific Paint tools, but it does not make every feature available in every region or release channel.
