Microsoft Paint Generative Erase removes an unwanted object or selected area and generates replacement content for the gap. Microsoft announced the feature for Windows 11 PCs broadly, so it is not the same as Paint’s more restricted Copilot+ features. You still need an up-to-date Paint installation, a Microsoft account, and an internet connection for the supporting AI services.
What Microsoft Paint Generative Erase does
Generative Erase is Microsoft Paint’s AI-assisted object-removal tool. You select or brush over an unwanted object, and Paint generates replacement content for the empty area so the image looks as if the object was not there.
That makes it different from Paint’s ordinary Eraser. A conventional eraser removes or changes pixels according to the canvas and background settings; Generative Erase tries to reconstruct what might logically belong behind the removed object. The result depends on the image. Small distractions surrounded by simple textures are generally more suitable than large objects crossing over people, buildings, text, or complicated patterns.

Microsoft announced Generative Erase for Windows 11 PCs, rather than limiting it to Copilot+ PCs. That distinction matters: several other Paint AI tools, including Generative Fill and Cocreator, have more restrictive Copilot+ hardware requirements.
Is Generative Erase available on every Windows PC?
Microsoft’s November 6, 2024 Windows Insider announcement said Generative Erase was available to users on all Windows 11 PCs. It was presented as a broader feature than Generative Fill, which initially required a Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PC, and Cocreator, which Microsoft also positioned as a Copilot+ feature.
In practice, availability can still depend on the installed Paint version, Microsoft’s rollout status, your Windows edition and updates, sign-in state, and internet connection. The current Paint support information is specifically for Windows 11. It also documents other AI features whose requirements are not identical to Generative Erase.
You should therefore avoid assuming that a missing Object Select or Generative Fill button means Generative Erase is unavailable. Those are related but separate capabilities.
If you need a new computer, a Windows 11 laptop is one practical way to get a compatible Paint environment, but it is not a mandatory purchase for this feature. An existing supported Windows 11 desktop or laptop should be sufficient; Microsoft did not announce that Generative Erase requires a premium Copilot+ PC.
How to remove an object with Generative Erase in Paint
- Open the image in Paint. Use File > Open, or open the image from Windows and choose Paint.
- Choose an area to remove. Depending on the version and interface, select the eraser tool or use Paint’s selection tools. A rectangular or free-form selection can be used to define the area.
- Choose Generative Erase. Look for it among the available AI editing commands or in the contextual menu associated with the selected area.
- Brush over the unwanted object. Cover the complete object, including its edges and any shadow or reflection that should also disappear.
- Refine the mask. Select Add area to erase if part of the object remains. Use Reduce area to erase if the highlighted region covers background or another subject that should stay.
- Apply the edit. Paint generates a replacement for the masked area.
- Inspect the result at full size. If the replacement contains an obvious seam, distortion, repeated texture, or leftover object detail, undo the change and try again with a more accurate mask.
Microsoft also describes rectangular and free-form selections as alternative ways to specify the area for Generative Erase. In some Paint versions, the command may appear in a contextual selection menu or after right-clicking the selected area. Labels and placement can change as Paint is updated.

Tips for better Generative Erase results
- Include the entire unwanted element. Select the object, its cast shadow, reflection, and small detached pieces if they should all be removed.
- Do not over-select. If the mask includes a person, sign, edge, or important foreground detail, Paint may reconstruct more than you intended.
- Work in smaller sections. Removing a large object in several carefully controlled operations can be easier to review than masking half the image at once.
- Preserve straight lines. Fences, bricks, window frames, text, and architectural edges are easy places for generated fill to become visibly inconsistent.
- Keep the original file. Save a copy before editing, particularly when the image is valuable, documentary, commercial, legal, or archival.
- Zoom in before masking. A closer view makes it easier to avoid selecting nearby subjects and to include thin edges.
These are practical editing precautions, not a promise of a particular output. Microsoft warns in its related AI erasure documentation that the generated result may not be perfect or match what the user expected.
What Generative Erase can—and cannot—be expected to do
Generative Erase is best treated as an editing aid, not as guaranteed restoration or forensic reconstruction. It is a reasonable choice for isolated distractions such as a small background object, an unwanted mark, or clutter surrounded by relatively consistent color and texture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteResults are less predictable when:
- the object is large compared with the image;
- it overlaps a person, animal, or another important subject;
- the background contains complex geometry or repeating details;
- the removed area includes text, faces, hands, or fine structural features;
- the object casts a complicated shadow or reflection; or
- there is not enough surrounding visual information from which to infer a plausible replacement.
For an important image, compare several attempts and retain the original. A visually convincing result is not necessarily evidence of what was actually behind an object, so AI-edited images should not be presented as unaltered documentation.
Microsoft account, internet, and processing requirements
Microsoft’s Paint support documentation says its AI features use the computer’s Neural Processing Unit to generate images locally, while also requiring a Microsoft account and an internet connection for cloud services that support safe AI use.
That means it would be inaccurate to describe Paint Generative Erase simply as either “entirely offline” or “entirely cloud-based.” Some generation work may occur locally on supported hardware, but Microsoft still identifies online services and account sign-in as part of the AI feature experience. The available Paint documentation does not establish every detail of data retention, telemetry, or provenance for Generative Erase, so privacy claims should remain limited to those documented requirements.
Microsoft’s separate Photos documentation describes that app’s Generative Erase workflow as local processing. That statement should not automatically be transferred to Paint, which has its own account and cloud-service requirements.

Paint’s related AI tools
Object Select
Object Select uses context-aware AI to identify and isolate an individual element on the canvas. Instead of manually tracing the whole outline, you can use the detected selection to copy, move, erase, or apply Generative Fill.
Microsoft presents Object Select under Paint capabilities for Copilot+ PCs. Its availability and hardware requirements should therefore be treated separately from the broader Windows 11 availability Microsoft announced for Generative Erase.
Generative Fill
Generative Fill adds or replaces content in a selected area based on a text prompt. It is a creation and replacement tool, whereas Generative Erase is intended to remove an unwanted area and synthesize a plausible background. Microsoft initially limited Generative Fill to Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs running Windows 11 version 24H2 or later.
Cocreator
Cocreator generates artwork from a text prompt and the user’s drawing. It is designed for creating images rather than specifically removing objects. Microsoft’s announcements described Cocreator as a Copilot+ feature, with later expansion to AMD- and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs.

Microsoft Photos has its own Generative Erase workflow for photographs. Its documented controls include brush-based selection, Auto Apply, Add Mask, Remove Mask, and Clear. Photos may be the more natural choice when the job is specifically retouching a photograph; Paint is better suited to a broader canvas and general image-editing workflow.
Microsoft Designer Generative Erase
Microsoft Designer is another separate option. Its Generative Erase workflow includes Quick Select and Brush Select. Designer should be treated as a separate design service, not as another mode inside Paint. Microsoft’s Designer documentation also discusses provenance metadata for Designer’s AI-generated or AI-edited outputs; that information should not be generalized to Paint without Paint-specific documentation.

Why Generative Erase may be missing
Try these checks in order:
- Confirm Windows 11. Generative Erase was announced for Windows 11 PCs. Do not assume the same availability on Windows 10.
- Update Paint. Open the Microsoft Store, go to the library or updates area, and install any available Paint update.
- Restart Paint and Windows. A newly installed app update or staged feature may not appear until the app or computer is restarted.
- Sign in when prompted. Paint’s AI documentation identifies Microsoft-account sign-in as a requirement for its AI services.
- Check the internet connection. The AI workflow requires connectivity for supporting cloud services.
- Distinguish the feature. Missing Object Select or Generative Fill may reflect Copilot+ hardware or a different rollout, not a Generative Erase problem.
- Repair or reinstall Paint if necessary. Microsoft provides instructions for uninstalling and reinstalling Paint on supported Windows versions, including Windows 10 version 22H2 and later. That reinstall guidance does not establish Generative Erase support for Windows 10.
Paint has continued to receive feature and stability updates. Microsoft’s release notes list version 11.2605.61.0 rolling to Beta and Release Preview channels on June 24, 2026, including improvements to the AI image-generation panel. Those notes do not document a withdrawal of Generative Erase from ordinary Windows 11 PCs. Store rollouts can nevertheless be staged, so two Windows 11 installations may not expose every label at the same time.
Optional hardware for more precise editing
Generative Erase does not require a special mouse or drawing tablet. A standard keyboard and pointing device are enough to follow Microsoft’s workflow. If you frequently brush around small edges, a comfortable mouse for image editing may make masking easier than a laptop trackpad. It is an optional precision accessory, not a feature requirement.

Artists and users doing detailed brush masking may also prefer a drawing tablet for Windows. Pressure sensitivity can make general brush work more comfortable, but Microsoft does not require or specifically recommend a tablet for Generative Erase. Do not buy a Copilot+ PC solely for object removal: Copilot+ hardware is more relevant to Object Select, Generative Fill, and Cocreator than to the broadly announced Generative Erase feature.
When Windows troubleshooting software is relevant
If Paint is missing updates, Windows is unstable, or several applications are slow or crashing, a general Windows performance troubleshooting tool such as Outbyte PC Repair may be relevant as one troubleshooting option. It should come only after the Microsoft-specific steps above, such as updating, restarting, repairing, or reinstalling Paint.
Outbyte does not add Generative Erase, unlock Copilot+ features, or guarantee that a crashing Paint installation will be repaired. Its own guidance acknowledges that no software can automatically repair every crashing application and that support may sometimes be needed.
Bottom line
Microsoft Paint Generative Erase can remove a selected object and generate replacement content in its place. Microsoft announced it for Windows 11 PCs, so a Copilot+ computer is not required merely to use this tool. You may need a Microsoft account, an internet connection, and an up-to-date Paint installation, and the result may require repeated masking or manual review.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Paint Generative Erase require a Copilot+ PC?
Microsoft announced Generative Erase for Windows 11 PCs, so it is not limited to Copilot+ hardware. The Paint app, Windows installation, account status, rollout stage, and internet connection can still affect whether the command appears.

Can I use Paint Generative Erase offline?
Microsoft’s Paint AI documentation says a Microsoft account and internet connection are required for cloud services that support safe AI use. Some generation work may be performed locally on supported hardware, but Paint should not be described as fully offline.
What is the difference between Generative Erase and Generative Fill?
No. Generative Erase is intended to remove an unwanted area and fill it with generated content. Generative Fill uses a text prompt to add or replace content, while Object Select isolates an element for further editing.

The feature may be unavailable because Windows or Paint is outdated, the rollout has not reached the device, the user is not signed in, or there is no internet connection. Object Select and Generative Fill can also have separate Copilot+ requirements.
Do I need to buy a new laptop to use Generative Erase?
No. Microsoft’s announced availability was for Windows 11 PCs. A Windows 11 laptop or desktop is only necessary if you do not already have a compatible computer.
The Bottom Line
Generative Erase in Microsoft Paint removes a brushed or selected object and AI-generates a replacement background. It was announced for Windows 11 PCs broadly—not only Copilot+ PCs—but requires current software, a Microsoft account, and internet connectivity for supporting services. Results vary, so preserve the original and review the edit carefully.
